VERY IMPORTANT VOTER INFORMATION!

Please check out the indomitable [info]lizmarcs' post about so-called "Voter Registration Purges" here. It seems some battleground states are doing just that -- purging voter registrations. As Liz says, I'm sure it's just a coincidence that the majority of the purges involve registered Democrats.

Anyway, please give it a quick read, and VOTE!

Happy birthday, [info]indiefic! And in case I flake out and don't post for a few days, Happy Happies also to [info]a2zmom, [info]itsabigrock, [info]kally05, [info]eleniangel, and [info]stir_of_echoes!

~

I have recently discovered that watching the Gilmore Girls causes a 6000% increase in my coffee consumption. What's up with that?

~

I don't have a whole lot today. The urge to Sim is strong, so I'm going to post this now and hope I'll be more talky meat tomorrow. Love yooooooou!

So... [06 Oct 2008|11:15am]

[info]writercon 2009 is a go. It's in Minneapolis, July 30-August 2.

I have...really mixed emotions about this. On the one hand, I've been to both previous WriterCons and had a tremendous time. I love meeting my fannish peers and getting all meta with stuff and talking about writing.

On the other hand.

  • Something like this will run me, conservatively, about a thousand dollars. That's a thousand dollars I could spend going to Mile Hi Con or ArmadilloCon or some other pro Con.

  • I've written one fanfic in the last, oh, two years. Count 'em, Jim, one. And I'm not planning on writing any more. My focus has entirely shifted to original fiction.

  • Fandom has splintered and scattered somewhat since 2004 and 2006. Honestly, the only fanfic I'm reading anymore is Iron Man and KKBB. I can't remember the last time I read anything in Buffy, Angel, or Firefly. I barely skim the newsletters anymore.

So...yeah. Now, if there's going to be a pro track, I'd definitely be interested in that, and in fact would be more than happy to be on panels about making the transition, finding markets, etc. But if that's not a factor, well, then...

    Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

And I've hit my target word count already.

Quiet is apparently good for me. As is hugging a stuffed anteater under my arm. RDJ looking at me from my desktop certainly doesn't hurt.

But I still have to figure out how my plot is going to work for the foreseeable future. Because this is where it gets complicated...

    at five AM. Really.

But since I am, I might as well do my Monday Weekly Word Count.

    Drumroll, please...

    Last week's word count: 27,305

    This week's word count: 30,735

Word count for the week: 3,430

Which is about a thousand more than last week, and not quite twice my weekly goal. Go, me.

Today, if I go a little over my goal, I'll crack 31,000. Seeing as I have the next scene kind of in mind, and a stuffed anteater under my arm for inspiration (along with, as I've said, a ridiculously handsome man staring at me from the right side of my computer screen with a sort of come-hither expression), I think I should be able to do that.

*cough* Not that the next scene is the least bit sexy, unless you think that non-consensual blood and pain is hot, which, yeah, not so much for me. Also, I may have killed off not!Happy in the last scene. And, not!Harry might actually prefer death to what they're going to do to him, and I've still got to figure a way around the whole "how are they going to control him" thing, because sedation for the really bad part may be out of the question.

    Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Fic: "To Follow Your Heart" (Percy/Pansy, Adult) [05 Oct 2008|06:37pm]

    Title: To Follow Your Heart
    Characters: Percy/Pansy
    Words: ~11,000
    Rating: Adult
A/N: Written for [info]countessmary for Sweet Charity--last spring. It's crazy, crazy overdue, and she and my other recipient have both been super patient (note to other recipient: yours will be soon, too). Countess Mary asked for Percy/Pansy, fluff or PWP; I hope this will meet her expectations. This went more in the direction of fluff, though there is eventually smut. Thanks to [info]snegurochka_lee for the speedy beta.

The Earth says hello. You twinkle above us, we twinkle below.

My rendition of Hair, ladies and gentleman. *bows* Thank you. Thank you.

This may be another sign that I'm really old, but it truly baffles me that one of the most popular songs in America isn't a "new" or "original" song. It's an OLD song, re-arranged, with new lyrics stuck in. And it's not just any old song, it's one of the most famous songs in modern music history. I'm looking at you, Kid Rock's All Summer Long. I mean... Sweet Home Alabama? Really? I mean, if he grew up in Alabama, it might even be understandable. But he grew up IN MICHIGAN. Not that there's anything wrong with Michigan, of course, but do you see the utter and complete disconnect of using this particularly Southern iconic song?

Now, I'm not angry or outraged about this -- I think "Lust For Life" used in a FAMILY Cruise commercial sort of killed my nerve endings -- but I'm baffled. I've never been much for little bits of songs being used this way. What do they call that? Sampling? But dudes, this is like, THE WHOLE SONG. And the public and industry and treating it like a NEW song, with accolades. It makes me go... huh?

    ~

Did I mention that I'm checking out the first few seasons of Gilmore Girls again, and OMG Padalecki is FOUR! I just had to point it out again. It's downright bizarre, is what it is. Milo Ventiglia, on the other hand, has changed not at all besides slightly smaller hair. What's up with that?

    ~

Speaking of Sam and Dean (sort of) -- HOW HARD DID THURSDAY ROCK? Although I only got to see about 25 minutes of the episode because my CW affiliate sucks... not to spoil, but it's full of OMFG! and Awww Poor Dean, and PLOTTY referential and foreshadowy goodness!

I rarely enjoy the Supernatural section of TwoP, but the recaplet for this week cracked me up. Check it out: )

I must say, I was more pleased than I imagined I would be when I read that OJ is going to JAIL. And I thought I'd be pretty pleased. There is some justice in the world. Of course, he'll be in special population, so he won't be in any danger of having what he did to his ex wife and her friend happen to HIM, which would truly be justice, but I'll take what I can get. Does that mean we never have to see his smug, canary eating grin ever again?

    ~

Okay. I don't think it's any secret that I'm a screaming lefty democrat who wouldn't vote for McCain if you paid me a million dollars.

Maybe for a million dollars, or if you held a gun to my head...

You get the point. ANYWAY, despite the fact that I am not a fan of the Republican party or any of its representatives, I have nothing personal against McCain. In fact, I almost even would say that I respect him, and I don't say that about politicians. Ever. And I have thus kept my mouth shut about his choice of a running mate. Her whole I'm such a twee redneck hick normal lady just like YOU if you shoot moose and hate other women and practice daily nepotism in your job...

But her whole comment about Obama "palling around with terrorists" is just too much. I mean, the woman is a complete twit. She's sarcastic, snide, and that scrunchy look she gets on her face drives me CRAZY. Also driving me crazy is the fact that she CAN'T JUST ANSWER A QUESTION. Do people REALLY want her to be a 73-year-old-man's heartbeat away from the presidency? Really?

Of course, as long as she's anti-choice, a whole lot of people don't care about the fact that she's completely incompetent. Ugh.

I've been writing this post for like, three days. I better post it before I forget AGAIN!

In exchange, here, have my old school Eccles1 cake recipe.

    I've cracked 30,000 words.

    *chair-dances*

And I was talking today with the handsome and talented Hubby-person about the story, and how it's become All About Not!Harry. And he said "Well, duh, RDJ plays him, right?" And I said "Sure, but he also plays not!Tony, and Tony Stark = hotter than Harry Lockhart (sorry, Harry, you know I love you, but it's true), so that doesn't signify."

And, of course, this has got me to thinking. Maybe the story should be about not!Harry, at least on a surface level. After all, he is, so far, the one who's been the most physically and psychologically injured here. I realize that it was supposed to be about these two high-powered CEO's duking it out, but not!Harry has become the collateral damage, and I'm not sure that not!Tony is willing to pay this high a price.

This puts me right back into "What are these characters afraid of, and what do they want most" territory. I'm pretty sure not!Tony just wants to putter around in his lab and find the cure for cancer while twitting his lovely and capable PA as much as humanly possible. However, my villain...

I think I need another motive for my villain. One on top of the one he already has. Because, seriously, the one he has is perfectly understandable to just about anyone, and not!Tony doesn't really have that good a reason for keeping this thing out of his hands--at least, in a dosage that will help the guy's wife. I mean, yeah, not!Tony's pissed at him for poaching one of his employees and stealing his tech, but he's even admitted he'd do the same thing if not!Pepper was sick. So, I need something else for the main climax.

Of course, the villain is also rather pissed at not!Tony for the death of his brother--even though not!Tony wasn't even in the room and not!Harry was the actual shooter.

Hm. This may...have given me an idea. Maybe.

It is written with care not to offend, but we all hold our views dear, and so I warn that the post is from a Liberal standpoint. Also, my trainer at the gym says I have to go three times a week. This is going to be Sunday, Tuesday and Friday, on account of I never get to leave work early on Wednesday and Thursday when Miss Mills is around. Tomorrow is going to be a double session because I didn't go on Friday because the Tube was all messed up.

Where I need you guys is this. On the gym days, remind me what I said and if you see me online before 7 or 8pm (except Sunday), call me on it? Thankee kindly.

    I'm such a cam whore.

Take a picture of yourself right now. Don't change your clothes, don't fix your hair... just take a picture. Post that picture with NO editing. Post these instructions with your picture.

I took this a few days ago, as soon as I saw this meme, in the morning. But it was accompanying a different post I set to private because it got too lengthy, so now I'm reposting it with this instead. I think I look kind of tired. I was in a good mood, though.

I'm reading a book for an honors class about a half Native American, half African American girl. It's got me thinking a little about Asian versus white identity. At home I was one of the least Asian person of Asian heritage around. I was, for most intents and purposes, Caucasian. I felt white. Here, there's a significantly smaller percentage of Asian students. I am seen as Asian by my friends here. I haven't heard so many references to my Asian half in my life, and it's been just a month since I got to college. It's not a good or bad thing, just as feeling more white than Japanese at home was neither. It's just something new. It's a shock to the system to suddenly be seen so differently from what I'm used to, because the first thing people see now isn't that I'm less Asian than the people I'm hanging out with, it's that I'm more so. In this book--it's called A Yellow Raft in Blue Water--this girl is singled out by both African Americans and Native Americans for the part of her that's different, even though they also share heritage. I wonder if we tend to spot differences from the majority rather than similarities? I found it odd that this character was singled out so negatively on the reservation she visited, because shared heritage, especially if it's uncommon, is a thread between people that I would think most would look for? I do, anyway, at least when others happen to be half Asian and half white, too. I'm not sure how I would look at it if I were full of either. I think I still feel white, most of the time. Being Asian feels like I'm trying to be an insider without having paid my dues.

Claudine just got S3 of How I Met Your Mother and we marathoned the first two discs, till people started falling asleep. I like another boy, or two, but not in the same way as the last one. This is safer. I just got home and I wish I were still at the other dorm because our building is adorable and homey and old, but also freezing because it is old. I was so waaarm before. My poor roommate's still awake doing a paper because she's going to be busy all weekend. Aw.

    And me tonight.
