For those of you who have significant others, how did you meet them?

Were there issues with people who didn't want to "deal" with the cp?

There came a time where I knew I was tired of just sitting around and not helping those I was called to help this summer. This summer's the first one in a long time I haven't had some sort of commitment.

I now host my own blog called Empowering People and Changing Lives that is designed to assist children, parents, and other individuals affected by special needs by providing resources, insights, and personal perspective.

Though some of you cannot relate to its purpose, I would encourage you to come on over and read my writings. It will encompass some personal experiences throughout college, and those are sure to be wild rides.

I also am a guest contributor to the EasyStand and United Cerebral Palsy blogs.

Inspired by Mommy bloggers like Renee and Tammy, I just couldn't say no. Also, check us out on NetworkedBlogs.

Thanks to everyone! Come on over and help us to continue to empower people and change lives!

As a sidenote, I will keep this account to follow my friends list; however, I feel as though it is time to move on and see what else is out there.  There is a chance I could officially author some articles as a result of this experience.

10th-Jul-2009 08:45 pm - Thanks!
I just wanted to thank all of you who responded to my last post about bathroom cleaning. I just got approved to recieve money from the government and will be hiring a friend of a friend to clean my bathroom for (hopefully) the remainder of my college career. This should cause less girl drama in my apartment, without causing me any extra finacail strain. Here's to you guys!

How do you deal with small tasks that seem so easy to other people?

- Plucking my eyebrows suck.  My hands get so tired, and it even gets painful at times.  It take me a long time to do it, so in the past I would put it off until I looked like a yeti.
- I cannot put on eye-liner perfectly to save my life.  Therefore, I hardly ever wear it.
- I recently bought spray deodorant.  I should have thought this one through.  My left side is much more affected than my right, and it is almost impossible to spray my right underarm with my left hand.  I don't want to waste it, though, so I keep trying.
- Shaving is an adventure.  I cut myself less often than I used to, due to practice.  But I have to take my time and remember to relax.
- I put on my bras by snapping it in the front and turning it around.  It's impossible for me to hook it from the back.
- I try not to buy clothes with really small buttons.  They are so frustrating.
- I have to buy the floss with the handles attached, because regular floss is hard to use for me.

Do any of you ever catch your self almost about to trip over yourself when you walk? And do some people actually kinda stare at it also?

Hello All,

I was wondering if any of you could talk to me about your experience as a driver, specifically in Canada. I'm curious to know what kind of funding (if any) there is in this country.

I've been through driving lessons before, and just when I was about to get the hand controls installed. my instructors wife passed away and everything kind of fell apart. So I'm starting up again because I'd really like the independence, but the lessons as well as the vehicle adaptation are very expensive and I was just wondering if anyone out there had any tips for me.

Thanks!

What are some ways of traveling if I didn't have family that was willing to help? One thing I don't really want to do is the whole cliche bit with a whole bunch of other disabled people and all of us in our matching t-shirts. (It's really the idea of the t-shirts that bothers me more than the idea of traveling with other disabled people, lol) I want to be able to plan my own agenda and go where I want. Anyone have any, perhaps, unconventional ideas?

To say that I know how it feels to be disabled is a lie because I was born with a disability that I somewhat overcame. I am the miracle child. The kid that was revealed to their parents as will never be able to walk or to do anything that every "normal" child can do. To part that is true I was born with cerebral palsy. I have trouble with things like spacial recognition and I have sensory integration disorder but can I identify with most people with CP no I find that I cant. On the other end I am "weird" within the non-CP society. It takes me longer to do things then most.I play varsity sports in college and I have to work almost twice as hard as everyone else to make sure that I dont hurt myself doing what everyone else does on a daily basis. More then that I have to find a different ways to do things. When most people pick to love horses and become involved in equestrian they dont think that their body will always fall off one side because of the weakness of past hemiparesis. In my mind I think about how incredible lucky I am to be who I am but I also am stuck, stuck wondering what normality really is and if even though I recovered from something that most done was that a curse. I dont know what I am really saying but I just sometimes want to be me instead of a label. Everytime I go to a new doctor it is like I am a specimine under a microscope. I mean Im nineteen going to school to become a dr. I play three sports and speak four languages. I am to them a success story but to me I am confused. I dont know why but I am completely and utterly confused

Hey everybody! I am new to lj/the C.P. community here and I need some advice. I'm a college student living with 3 roommates and A LOT of the responsibility of cleaning the bathroom is falling on the roomie I share my bathroom with. I feel guilty about that, and I can tell she resents it a little, but due to my disability it is very difficult to clean the bathroom to her (or even my own) standards . I know that a PA would do this but I don't need a PA for anything else.  Are they're services that clean disabled people's houses that insurance/ the government would cover??
6th-Jun-2009 05:12 pm - Housing Question
icon made by me
Hello,
I have a question for those of you that currently have an apartment or house and are a wheelchair user: how difficult is it to make accessible? Are there resources to make homes accessible that are affordable and is it hard to find an accessible home?

Thanks.
