on the subject of cats i have decided that cats have some form of communication that we do not understand. whether it is verbal, body language, or something long the lines of "bugger" communication i am not sure. background: Pippin has been outside for a good while now and has not come home for any reason. Even if he did come home, i do nto live in the same apartment, and therefore he would be lost at least a little bit. Momma cat has been outside less time and knows which apaprtment i am staying in. She comes to the door for food at various hours of the night, and once i have fed her and given her attention, i go inside and i am forced to ignore her pathetic meows to be let in. (this is not my apartment, so i can not have the cats inside.) example of why i think they must talk to each other: Last night when i came home from work i heard a really loud meow outside, and assumed it was momma (although she NEVER meows very loud at all). I step outside to feed her and i am greeted directly outside the door by a Pippin who really wants to come inside. After shooing him back a bit i fed them both and went inside. He then meowed again after her was finished eating, but stopped after only two meows. Either she told him where i was living, and that i do not come back outside when you want me to, or i give off a really strong smell that he was able to follow. Either way, i am glad that both my kitties know where i am and are healthy. i fully intend to take them back into what ever apartment i get for my self if possible. i lvoe my kitties. iPhone So, I was at a conference today and won a free (first generation) iPhone. I happen to also be in need of a new phone. Switching to the iPhone would mean changing providers, probably unlocking it, and a huge increase in phone bills (or loss of internet). Anyone out here got an iPhone with a pay-as-you-go or prepaid internet package? Or maybe I should just sell it on eBay... Current Mood: awakeCurrent Music: Heart of Stone - Great Big Sea |

Jenny McCarthy: Still Pretty Hot, Dangerously Stupid http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/health/2008/10/01/intv.mccarthy.cnn
She is campaigning against vaccinations, saying that they cause autism. I don't believe that there is a causal linkage, but truth of the core argument aside, her perspective on it is idiotic and she's a pretty bad spokeswoman. Interviewer: [Doctors say] that there preventable diseases that children are dying from because they're not getting vaccinated. McCarthy: People are also dying from vaccinations. Evan, my son, died in front of me, for two minutes. Um... what? |

The TiVo Gods Hate Me I just turned on my TiVo Series3. I watched a TiVoCast program and it was fine. Then I went to play another and it started but stuttered a lot. I tried it a few times and it didn't work right. So I tried another, same thing. I went to Live TV and it seemed to be OK, but then that locked up for a bit too. I've had weirdness before fixed by a restart, so I restarted the box. Live TV seemed to be OK, but the TiVoCast content still wouldn't play. Then I tried normal recordings, same thing, even on recordings from days ago. Uh oh. And I thought I heard something. So I got down by the unit, and I heard a clicking. Clicking is not good. I determined that the clicking was coming from the 500GB My DVR Expander connected to the TiVo. That's definitely not good. I checked the connections and restarted again. And it told me the external device wasn't connected. I rechecked and restarted again, same error. I knew it was hopeless but I tried a few more times anyway. Nope, my external drive just died. Click of Death. This is the second 500GB WD SATA drive I've had die in the past couple of months. I had one in a USB enclosure for my PC that also died, also with the Click of Death, and it was even younger. So now I'm restarting the TiVo without it, and I know that means I'm going to lose recordings. Of course normally I'm caught right up with my recordings so I'd only lose a day or so. But no, this had to happen when I've been unusually busy and have a couple of weeks worth of programs, including the season premiers of several shows (Heroes, for example) unwatched. Not to mention shows that won't repeat any time soon (a couple of weeks of Code Geass and Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, for example). Oh yeah, it just finished and just about everything is gone - all that's left is a handful of TiVoCasts that must have been 100% on the internal drive by chance. Even all the suggestions are gone. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, since I have a Series2 in my bedroom that I have mirror my season passes, only without anything set to Keep Until I Delete, for just such an emergency. Normally. But, of course, that unit had started exhibiting a weird issue where the on-screen Guide would be fine, but the scheduler would be complaining it was running out of data. Like this morning the scheduler was complaining it'd be out by 10/7, but the on-screen guide went out to 10/12. I figure this was database corruption and everything else I've tried didn't fix it, so, since it was only my backup unit, I took drastic action. Can you guess what I did? Yeah, less that 12 hours ago I did a Clear and Delete Everything. So all my 'backup' recordings? Gone too. I'm so very happy at this moment. Some of the content I might be able to grab from sites like Hulu, some I might be able to buy from Amazon VOD, but I'm just SOL on a lot of it. I doubt there is any warranty on the My DVR Expander either. ( Any help finding these: ) Current Mood: pissed offCurrent Music: quiet |

Looks like we're live. Today, we released our free-to-play (but a good deal of premium content) MMO racing game. I think the press release is tomorrow, but y'all can check it out here before the kiddies get to it. Oh, and... GT fans should probably play on Expert to not feel cheated. |

* Grab the nearest book. * Open the book to page 56. * Find the fifth sentence. * Post the text of the next two to five sentences in your journal along with these instructions. * Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.
although i like these random literary swatches, this can become complicated when the book next to you has no actual sentences for some time on the page. The book closest to me is the 3.5 Monsters Manual. |

If this happened in First Baptist Church, it'd be all over the news, but since someone gassed little muslim children in one of them crazy terrorist mosques, then it's not news. America makes me sick. The sister-fucking redneck pieces of shit who did this are probably getting pats on the back from local government. So far there is no indication that the incident was the result of a hate crime, according to Dayton police. ORLY? Edit: I see other people on the flist have seen this too, I'm glad it's getting around. |

Something about September, I guess... It's been seven years since the last terrorist attack on U.S. soil, but it looks like that's over. This time, they're targeting our children. Let's make sure the perpetrators are caught and executed - but not tortured. Write your Congressman. We won't take this lying down but we won't devolve into an angry mob. i love stumble. i love wpi. here, both loves can be together. Chemical Engineer Chocolate Chip Cookies
The following recipe for chocolate chip cookies appeared in Chemical & Engineering News (June 19, 1995). It was attributed to Jeannene Aackerman.

2. 4.9 cm3 NaHCO3
3. 4.9 cm3 refined halite
4. 236.6 cm3 partially hydrogenated tallow triglyceride

To a 2-L jacketed round reactor vessel (reactor #1) with an overall heat-transfer coefficient of about 100 Btu/F-ft2-hr add one, two, and three with constant agitation.
In a second 2-L reactor vessel with a radial flow impeller operating at 100 rpm add four, five, six, and seven until the mixture is homogeneous.
To reactor #2 add eight followed by three equal portions of the homogeneous mixture in reactor #1. Additionally, add nine and ten slowly with constant agitation. Care must be taken at this point in the reaction to control any temperature rise that may be the result
of an exothermic reaction.
Using a screw extrude attached to a #4 nodulizer place the mixture piece-meal on a 316SS sheet (300 x 600 mm). Heat in a 460 K oven for a period of time that is in agreement with Frank & Johnston's first order rate expression (see JACOS, 21, 55), or until golden brown. Once the reaction is complete, place the sheet on a 25 C heat-
transfer table allowing the product to come to equilibrium. |

My DUH! moment of the day... I have in my hands a bottled chocolate milkshake. In fact, right below the brand name is the legend, "Milk Shake." I just happened to glance at the ingredient warning section on the bottle. I kid you not, it reads: CONTAINS: Milk. For one, I certainly hope so. Else I would sue the company under false advertising. Second... it says "Milk Shake" right on the front of the bottle. Would it not be safe to assume that there would be a least one iota of milky essence in there? Especially when the first item on the list of ingredients says rather plainly, "Milk"? When was the last time you opened up a bottle of Nestle Quik, and was surprised that it was not made from, say, fish? "What's that there? Cod flavored Quik? Yum!" This ranks right up there with the opening instructions you now find on your everyday Hershey and Kit Kat bars. Good gods above and below, have we, as a society, become such complete and utter doorknobs that even our lizard brains can't fathom that there just might be milk in a product labelled "Milkshake?" Here endeth the snarkiness... Current Mood: thoughtfulCurrent Music: Queen - Headlong -- (Classic Queen) |

Simulated Piano Audiophile musicians will love this. You know how most virtual pianos are based on samples from real pianos? Well, Pianoteq decided to take a different approach, by simulating an actual physical piano. As in, their software simulates all the reverberations, the strings, the hammers, the cabinet. Everything. No samples. Which means everything is adjustable. You can simulate the piano tuned in different temperaments, with the lid open, closed, or half-open, the length of the piano, etc. |
