Some of you may have already seen this, but I thought it was pretty neat when my mom sent it to me:
Granted, it's a 5-string cello, but still... way cool. |

Hi. I was wondering whether any of you fellow cello-people might know a place on the net I could find the sheet music for Clair de lune ( suite bergamasque ) for cello? Or if anyone who has it could be so kind as to mail it to me. I just can't seem to find it. Does one just have to try adapting the piano version? I've never heard a cello playing it solo before stumbling over a recording by Rostropovich just now, and, well, ... Thanks in advance. |

Hi!
I was wondering if anyone here knows where I can find a recording of Julius Klengel's Concerto in E minor (Op. 45) for two cellos? Actually, if anyone knows where I can find recordings of any of his compositions, I would greatly appreciate it if you share your knowledge!
Thank you! |

| cello travel, again! |

So I'm flying with my cello tomorrow, and while I am not new cello flight, I am using a purchased seat for the first time (usually I use an industrial-strength case, but it was actually CHEAPER to buy the seat this time. wtf?!). My question is, the endpin. I'm concerned I'll go through security and they'll confiscate my beloved endpin, which would put me out a LOT of money, not to mention screw up my time at the festival to whence I am traveling! However, I am equally concerned that if I pack the endpin in my luggage, it will either freak out the security guy checking it (I just know it would end up being checked) OR more likely they'll lose my luggage between flights and I will, again, be out an endpin.
Thoughts? Do they care about endpins, do they even notice? I'll flying out of ORD, if that makes a difference. :)
thanks!

How long did it take you to learn the notes? How long did it take to memorize it? or If you know someone who did how long did it take for them?
and about what level of skill is needed to play this piece? (please state by what standard you measure the difficulty with eg. suzuki, abrsm, mtna, mtac etc.) |

| Beginning My Journey |

Hello Everyone!
In the Fall I am going to start pursuing a music degree. I'm going to try and start taking classes this summer, to get a head start. Of course, I need to buy a cello. Most of the shops I've been to have cellos for beginners at around $1,000. I simply cannot afford this. I know there is a rental option from most places, however it is based on credit and mine is /horrible/. I lost my job last year, and thus lost my apartment, car, etc., etc., etc. I have no family to which I can ask for help on this issue either. It's just me and my lonesome. So I've been desperately trying to find something I can afford, which is no more than $500. I found this website, Musician's Friend, which seems to have a good reputation. The cello there are in my price range. I just don't want to purchase something and it not be acceptable. I am beginning my studies at a community college, and hope to transfer to a university in two years.
The cello options on this site are:
1. Florea Recital II Cello Outfit - $350
2. Florea Prodigy Cello Outfit - $400
3. Bellafina Model 50 Cello Outfit - Scratch 'n' Dent - $395.00 - $467.49
Does anyone know anything about these cellos? Do you think I should go ahead and purchase it, since it's only what I can afford? The only other option, it seems, is just not to pursue this. Unless someone else has any ideas they could offer? I live in Portland, Oregon if anyone has local help.
Thanks for your time folks. |

Hello fellow cellists! I'm asking around about other people's opinions and suggestions for places to go! I'm currently looking into Boston Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, UCLA, Boston College, Northwestern, and Northeaster for potential places to go, but I want to know your guys' opinions on the cello proffessors at these schools, and also, suggestions of other good cello studio's in the US and in Spain. I'd love for as much input as possible, and also the more specific you are, the better. I really appreciate any time that's taken out of your life to help me out.
Thanks heaps! Josh Dent
P.S. I'm looking for places to go to get my performance degree at the master's level.

I'm going to commission a friend of my sister's to airbrush my cello case. I've been wanting to do something with my case for a very long time and now that's it becoming a reality, I have no idea what I want anymore.
Here you will find what my case looks like now: http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k23/muffinloaf/Photos/HPIM7261.jpg
And here you will find the friend's dA account: http://zyis.deviantart.com/
Judging by her strengths as an artist, what do you think I should have her do to my case? I'm open for suggestions, guys! I would like something with warm colors, whatever it may be.

Just wated to share what I went through during my junior recital.
One of the most epic events of my music career was my junior recital. I spent hours memorizing the 1st Bach Suite. Walking on a stage set up with simply a centered chair was so exhilarating and nerve wrecking at the same time. My legs were trembling. I felt like my skirt rode up too much so I was less comfortable than I could’ve been, but that wasn’t saying much. My hands were already pouring with sweat, and I closed my eyes and tried to picture the first notes of the Prelude, but that probably didn’t happen. I took a deep breath and a moment that “should’ve been longer,” according to my orchestra conductor. The first note was so scary, but I tried to stay calm and remember the patterns and coordination of my fingers and bow hand. Fine, fine, fine. Halfway through, my mind just blanks. What the fudge is the next pattern? In a span of 2 seconds, my mind goes over the options. a) Run off stage crying. b) Stop and start over. c) Stop and try and think of what’s next. d) Make up something until I figure out where the eff to go.
I chose option D. I freakin improvised (not especially well, I know I stayed in G, but it is what it is) on Bach’s Prelude. I went back and forth in my head for a few weeks being proud of myself for “staying in character” (for lack of better words), I mean, it was my first time playing a piece of that extent from memory for a performance and being pissed at myself for spending all those hours memorizing only to spaz on stage. Thinking back over it, I’m upset again. I finished the piece after finally getting back on towards the bottom of the page (the measure that goes F# C G F#... and played the rest fine (maybe. I still haven’t seen the video). I got through the rest of the movements a lot better though I kinda did the same thing on the Courante and ended that one early. I’m sure I just need to play from memory more often, and Bach is notoriously known for being difficult to memorize.
My next piece was the first movement of Brahms Sonata in Em. I bet I could’ve memorized that one like….WAY easier. I think that one went really well. It's so gorgeous it almost plays itself. And I hit that high C like a champ.
The last piece was the Boccherini duet for 2 celli with Joe. I’m so glad we did our recital together cuz I did everything with him in college! He’s a twin, but I feel like we’re twins sometimes lol. The piece is cute. We played well together and it was the easiest piece for both of us so we could relax. I played 2nd cello, and I think it’s almost harder than 1st cello…it has these ridiculous thumb position chords that I (think) nailed.
I put so much preparation and emotion into this recital because I’m not a performance major and I’m not an exceptional player so I don’t perform (by myself especially) frequently. I loved it though and it makes me want to perform more.
Yaaaay me (and yosef) :-)

Hi, answering any one of the two questions is fine.
1. What suzuki books did you finish by the end of the first year of playing cello?
2. When did you begin working on the Suzuki Book 5?
I need as many answers before Friday! Please answer and I will be very thankful!
Thanks, Celloangel |

So, kind of a random question, but-- I'm giving a recital on Saturday and I need some way to keep my not-quite-shoulder-length hair out of my face and away from my fingers when I play. Normally pulling it back into a ponytail works fine, but I'm trying to find something that is a little more formal. Any resources? Thanks!

So I'm stuck without lessons for the next week and my teacher has told me to move on to the second movement of Goltermann's Concerto No. 4. You know, the slow one.
I'm in dire need of a recording somewhere. YouTube is a tricky thing, all I can find is the first movement. Help?
Please and thank you. :) |

Cello & vocal, roots duo Bethany & Rufus will perform at the 'Third Thursday Coffeehouse' Series at The Blackrock Center for the Arts on Thursday, April 16. Presented by MoFolk Music Productions, Third Thursday Coffeehouse enters its 7th season presenting an exciting mix of folk music!
BETHANY & RUFUS | THIRD THURSDAY COFFEEHOUSE Thursday, April 16, 7:30 PM BlackRock Center for the Arts 12901 Town Commons Drive Germantown, Maryland Info: 304-267-7963 Tickets: $22 (advance); $27 (door) Purchase: http://tinyurl.com/cjvwhq
"When Bethany Yarrow and Rufus Cappadocia join forces on stage, watch out. The combination — or should that be combustion? — of their incredible talents sparks a fire-in-the-belly, soul-stirring experience with American folk music that lingers long after the concert ends. Bethany just happens to be the daughter of Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary fame)—and a powerful folk musician in her own right, able to re-invent the old songs and make them her own. Rufus started playing the cello as a three-year-old and has dared to go where few cellists have gone before—tapping into the heart of world music with the five-string electric cello he designed. Separately, they’re amazing. Together, they’re unbelievable." Third Thursday Coffeehouse

I'm looking for the sheet music for this lovely Boccherini quintet. It is way above my level, but I like bookmarking sheet music I'd like to aspire to so I can buy and learn it when I'm ready.
The problem is I can't find this music in any of the usual places. The info I've got in it is:
Luigi Boccherini String Quintet Op. 25 No. 4, C Major, Allegro
I've searched the IMSLP, sheetmusicplus and sharmusic.com. This has got to exist somewhere for purchase, doesn't it? Any tips and pointers for finding this music would be greatly appreciated!

| cello concertos? |
|

Hi. I'm currently a junior. I've been learning cello since 7th grade, making it my 4th year in playing cello. Next year, my senior year, I'm planning to join the high school orchestra once again. At the end of the year usually every senior has to perform one movement of a concerto with the school symphony. However, I've been busy with academics and only occasionally played the cello. I'm planning to get back onto practicing asap, and im working on the Suzuki levels 4& 5.
Does anyone know any easier cello concertos that I would be able to play well within 10 months of time? |
