Why are you a Catholic?

  • Mar. 4th, 2006 at 2:09 PM
Wow - I haven't been on this communtiy for so long, despite being the maintainer! Anyway, just out of curiosity, I have a little question: Why are you a Catholic? This goes out to anyone Catholic teen who reads this. I just thought it'd be really interesting to see what people say. I'm not asking so much how you became a Catholic, but why you feel called to the Catholic Church in particular, that sort of thing.

Excellent question! I've asked myself that question, so here are some of my answers.

I've felt that no matter what, I will always be faithful and attracted to the RCC. It's just been a part of my life, of who I am, ever since I was born. It's just a part of me that I can't shut down or get rid of.
I find peace, solace, and fulfillment in the Church. The Church offers me a place to go to, and with being a teen, it can be hard. I won't want to talk to parents, friends, family, but God and the Church is there. I think that's amazing.
Don't get me wrong, I have wanted to leave the Church before. Yet, when I would look at other churches, and even though they had truth, they didn't have the full Truth. Things would be missing or not explained, and so I would always return to the Church and be happy that I'm a part of it.
The Church has helped me grow and become the person who I am, and I am eager to get Confirmed in October. I feel that I'm Catholic because the Church has the same feelings and values I do. But honestly, there's no clear answer. I think it's an answer so deep in my soul only God knows why.

I know how you feel! I'm so happy to be a Catholic, and like you I've looked at other religions and realised they just don't have the whole truth like the Catholic Church does. I personally love that it has more rules than Protestant churches because it means it's harder to go wrong - stick to the rules and you won't sin as much, I s'pose. You're really lucky to be going into your Confirmation feeling like that - unfortunately, when I did mine I wasn't so open to God and I felt I was just doing it because I knew it would upset my parents if I didn't.

my great grandma kept telling me and my mom that she wanted us to convert but we never did until we just decided to do it and I was reluctant at first but now I cant get enough of it!

What do you love so much about it? Sorry, you don't have to answer if you don't want to, I'm just really intrigued by the people on this journal. I'm nineteen now and it took me until I was seventeen to find God, despite being brought up a Catholic. Pope John Paul II always loved the young people - we're the future of the Church, right?!

I'm Catholic because...
I've recently gotten more fired up by God's spirit and just got back into our Catholic faith again, and not too long ago, I had these revelations (I'm not using the prophetic type but the personal "I think God told me in his own special way that only I could understand) that I might be called to be a nun. And I don't think any other Christian denomination has nuns so I thought I'd put in my 2 cents.

Re: I'm Catholic because...
That's so great if you think God's calling you to be a nun! Both my sisters are seriously considering becoming nuns and one of them has just realised which Order God wants her in. It's so brilliant when God reveals your vocation! Just keep praying about it and the more you pray, the more you'll learn about what God wants you to do. :-)
