I spent my Christmas back home with my folks in the Washington-Baltimore metro area. I went to a couple large (but technically Minor) Basilicas, and took pictures. This second set is from
The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, on the campus of Catholic University in Washington DC. Started in 1920, the crypt church was completed in 1931. Due to WWII, the Upper Church wasn't completed until 1959. It's the largest Roman Catholic church in North America, containing 70 chapels and oratories, and houses the largest collection of contemporary ecclesiastical art on earth. Byzantine-Romanesque in style, it holds six Masses and five hours of Confessions daily. These pictures show MAYBE 10% of everything there is to see in this gigantic Cathedral.
