OMGWTFBBQ?

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 10:54 PM
I don't usually post these twice. Posted under [info]dedicatetoyou below and is one of the blanks there. Since I actually bothered to get out the disk with the extra images on it, blah, blah, blah, I figured I'd post it here. I've bothered with this disk less than a handful of times in the year and a half I've owned this computer. Red-letter day. Caturday.
Chandelier fell, we want a refund.

New, from the huge cache of blanks from [info]grmblfjx Candy eggiweggs if you get the reference.

When I first saw it, I was really much, much too young. Like eleven or so. Most of it went over my head then, which was probably a good thing. Got more out of it later, and from reading the book. (After Rolling Stone published the last chapter. US books cut it, for some reason.

According to Burgess, the US publisher cut it because they felt Alex's growing up was a cop-out.

Thanks. I'd never heard that before. But how is growing up a cop-out? Everyone does it, unless they die first. Just weird.

I don't have the book on me right now, but IIRC, the publisher's view was that Alex was so irredeemably evil that he would never stop, so his realization that ultraviolence was juvenile and pointless (thanks to his encounter with Pete after being released from hospital) would never have really happened.

Burgess really laid the smack down on the publisher. Highly recommend you obtain the Resucked version from Amazon.

I'll consider it but Clockwork Orange is the book I can't keep. I've lost copies, had them stolen, and one of them was thrown away by someone I loaned it to. He thought the book was so evil (or whatever) that no one should read it. WTF was he thinking, throwing away my book?

It would just figure that I'd go through the effort of getting a real copy and have it disappear.

I don't think it's just you. I've lent that book out too and never got it back!

Yeah Clockwork is interesting in the sense of how it portrays human nature and the concept of Nihlism.
I have to see I read it when I was in High school, and after i learned the language by context really got into it.
Although I never really joined the cult of "alex worship" which was probably a good thing.

I think I first saw the movie with my dad. Yep... I still feel a bit odd watching it with him, but we both love the movie and I the book.
