Hey, I just came across this community. I've always loved cats. I've had mine, Ed, since 2004. I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of cat she was. I'll provide pictures under the cut. I have taken her to the vet but I've never asked what kind of cat she was, etc., it's a question that has just sprung up today. I know, kind of weird of me... anyway, here she is!!!

Also, I've included a couple pictures of my dad's cat. Maybe someone knows what he is? :P
Onward! )

So I have a 7 month old kitten named Chandler and I actually agonised over getting a cat for 3 years because I was worried that I wouldn't be responsible enough etc. Also, my sister claimed to hate cats and I live with just my sister.

Anyway, my cousin had to get rid of a kitten which her mom didn't want around the house, so I offered to take it in. I was worried about my sister's reaction to the cat, but she has been surprisingly open to it, well except that she refuses to touch his poo or go near his litter, that's all me!

Anyway I hear about the benefits of having more than one cat and this would help since my sister and I are usually at work all day and Chandler could use the company.

But I have two concerns:

1. My sister's patience could wear thin and trust me she can make my life a living hell when she's unhappy.

2. And I wonder if I can afford it? I mean I can afford to feed my cat and send him to the vet but wouldn't another cat be an additional expense?

I would love to hear your views....

I just adopted a cute little kitty, hoping he will become a friend and playmate for my 1 year old tuxedo cat.

This new kitty - who is going to be called Pesto - is super shy / scared. "His" room while he gets used to the change and us is our studio, and his made the area under the sofa his hideout. He just won't come out of there! Well, he has come out a couple of times tentatively, the first one I showed him where his litter box is (he used it), and the second one, other than wondering around he also used it again. So we're good in the litter box area - I hope.

I was wondering if there was anything I could do (other than give him time) to encourage him to come out, to not be scared of us humans? Should I try to spend as much time possible in the studio doing my own thing so that he gets used to me, or leave him alone in there?

Also wondering how often I should let my resident cat go in there (supervised). So far, it's Bicho (the resident cat) who got Pesto to come out from under the sofa for a little while. They sniffed each other, there were a couple of hisses from both of them, and an attempt at swatting from Bicho's part - but I don't think he was trying to really attack or hurt Pesto, just scare him, because the distance between them was bigger than his paw's reach. I just let Bicho come into the room for two short periods of time during the afternoon, so as to not overwhelm little Pesto.

I also had to kick Bicho out when it looked like he was going to eat the kitties food, as I was already having a hard enough time getting the Pesto to eat.

I was also wondering what signs to look for as to when they can be left together (supervised) for longer periods of time, as well as when can I consider that they're actually friends? And when will it be OK to let the kitty full run of the house (I'm assuming after he's been accepted and friended by Bicho)?

Once Pesto actually comes out from under the sofa I'll try to take photos of him and post them :-)

My cat has made several trips to the litterbox tonight after crying all evening. I went to check and see what was going on, and when I opened the litterbox, I saw little clumps everywhere. Lots of them. Usually I find one or two big clumps and lots of little poo pieces (sorry if it's TMI, but every bit of information is a clue right?). I scoop every night. Also noteworthy: she did not go at all yesterday.

She is resting now and hasn't been back in for a while and I'm hoping it will stay that way, but meanwhile, what could this possibly be? I will of course make a vet appointment if I find out that it has continued in the morning, but I am worried about her and want to know what I might expect to find out.

She is eating normally, doesn't seem overly thirsty, or otherwise behaving strangely. I tried googling but all the results I found pertained to cats NOT using the litterbox, as opposed to using it too much.

People, fellow pet-lovers,

I cannot stress the importance of a pet emergency fund!

Thank you,

the girl whose pet emergency fund is about to be depleted.

*note: my kitty is fine! My sister's dog, though, is going in for an emergency visit tomorrow. They are afraid he needs ear surgery (hopefully not!). She's a student, so her emergency fund is her older sister. I cannot say how good it feels to let my sister know that cost has nothing to do with Sherlock's treatment.

Introducing Molly, my little brother's cat. She's about two years old.

Molly Dolly )

She's definitely the most playful of all three cats. Not surprising since she is very young compared to the other two. She always enjoys wrestling with Lily, the second oldest. And sometimes gets put in her place by Apollo, the oldest. She is very lean and always is chasing something, mostly bugs. My mama is the one that calls her Molly Dolly.

I'm new here but I really wanted some advice from other cat owners.

I finally convinced my mom and dad to let me have a cat (I haven't owned a pet before for a few years since I was 13 and I'm 21 now) to help me cope with loneliness and depression. I'm excited to be getting something to care for and whatnot.

They told me they don't want a "wild tabby cat" that we got from a shelter last time (it was the reason WHY she gave it away 3 months later). The tabby we got was a kitten but she was absolutely wild, terrible and ferocious. So my mom believes that everything you get from the shelter will come out this way which isn't true.

They want a "beautiful cat" and want to look at pet stores. I told them so many reasons why pet stores are bad but they insist on getting a pretty cat from a pet store. I'm worried off my hinges about getting a kitten from a pet store (I wanted to adopt an older cat, I did my research!) because I'm worried about its health. I have no idea where it came from and most of the people who work there don't know either.

I need advice on how to convince my parents that adopting and rescuing from a shelter is much better than going to pet stores but I wanted to see how many of you got your cats. I know most will get them from shelters but has anyone here got a pet store cat and had a great experience?

ETA: I live in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area (in the south western USA). We have little options available here so I'd like to know about pet stores and such instead of purebred rescues (we do not have those).

ETA2: No breeders. Too expensive (looked into it already). We want something that is inexpensive and nice. We're going to Petsmart the next time we're in Albuquerque. :]

I hope the high price tags will deter my parents away and let me go to a shelter.

I was at Petsmart last week buying food for Sister (I can't call her anything else, so that name's sticking) when this girl comes in with a panting, scraggly looking kitten. I go ooh and aah over it and offer to get him some water, and she says "Actually, I'm looking for someone to take it."

The words I really hate to hear. >.<

Well she apparently found it at her workplace and she had gone to several vets to try and find a temporary home for him but sadly it is kitten season in Louisiana. So being the sucker that I am, I took the little guy. I took him to the vet immediately to be tested for FIV/FeLeuk and yay negative! He has an ouchie on his tail that is mending but other than that and being too skinny he is a healthy baby! So now I have another one and let me tell you, Sister and he gets along SO well. It really is a shame I can't keep him! When Moto would play with her, she was far too small to be able to play back so she hasn't ever really played with another cat.

How do your cats react to catnip? Only one out of our three will eat it. The others act like they are scared of it. I will try to hold it near them but they jump back.

Mommy loves you more than anything, you know that. But could we please discuss your vomiting? I know that you are a cat, and that vomiting occurs every now and then, but couldn't you please do that in the bathroom where it's easy to wash off? This morning you woke me up at 04.30 am when you vomited on top of a book shelf. =_=

And a couple of months ago you were in the bathroom, starting to make the coughing sounds, ran out of the bathroom and threw up on my persian rug.

Again, I love you. But please?

Here's the little monste-, I mean, angel:
