| Lost: Season 5 Post-Mortem |
[Jun. 16th, 2009|07:36 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | ecstatic | ] | Ever since the agreement was made with ABC to end the show with the sixth season, the writing on "Lost" has been out of this world. It was already quite good to begin with, but now there is a lot less fluff. The plot is moving along at a blistering pace, and there's a renewed sense of energy and purpose. Where once it seemed like the show would never be able to provide answers to the questions raised in the first few seasons, it now seems like a foregone conclusion that the writers know what they're doing.

| Critical Myth Review: Lost 5.16: "The Incident" |
[May. 14th, 2009|08:53 pm] |
| [ | mood |

Review: Lost 5.16: "The Incident"
Overall, this episode was another jam-packed and thought-provoking season finale, tying together aspects of the series' mythology going back to the early first season while setting the perfect stage for the sixth and final season. As always, the long wait between seasons will be hard to bear. |

Review: Lost 5.15: "Follow the Leader"
Overall, this was a fitting prelude to the events of the finale, shedding light on key relationships and setting the stage for several confrontations. The overall feeling is that the season finale will demonstrate that the fifth season was all about setting the stage for the final season, and as usual, that kind of planning has yielded solid storytelling. |

Review: Lost 5.14: "The Variable"
Overall, this was another dense but thrilling step towards the season finale, and events are spinning out of control. The character focus is particularly compelling, and while the episode is a bit short on major revelations, it makes up for it in major implications. |

Review: Lost 5.13: "Some Like it Hoth"
Overall, this episode was a bit less dense than many of the previous episodes, most likely due to the need to advance several subplots in preparation for the final leg of the season. Like most transitional episodes, enjoyment will be based almost entirely upon appreciation of the character in focus. |

Review: Lost 5.12: "Dead is Dead"
Overall, this was one of the best episodes of the season, focusing tightly on one of the key relationships in the series and shedding light on some of the key mysteries. The writers continue to peel back the layers of the story and inform much of what has come before, while perfectly setting the stage for the grand resolution still to come. |

| [ | mood |
| | bouncy | ] |

Review: Lost 5.10: "He's Our You"
Overall, this episode returned to the original format of the series with the requisite fifth season twist, focusing on a character whose actions in the future informed his psychological state in the past. As complex as that sounds, the story was actually quite straightforward. The writers have continued to deliver with yet another strong entry for the season! |

| [ | mood |

Review: Lost 5.9: "Namaste"
Overall, this episode was all about setting up the status quo for the second half of the season, finishing what the previous episode started. That doesn't mean that there weren't great character moments, because that's what this show has always been about. But this is a more plot-driven episode, and for some, that will be a drawback. |

| [ | mood |

 Review: Lost 5.8: "LeFleur"
Overall, this episode effectively marks the mid-point of the fifth season, and so far, the season has been hitting on all cylinders. The revelations just keep coming, one after another, and the end effect is a tightening-up of the series as a whole. It's amazing to think that all of this is still just a prelude to whatever is coming in the sixth and final season. |

| | blah | ] |

Review: Lost 5.6: "316"
Overall, this episode seemed to lack the intensity of the rest of the season to date, perhaps owing to the tight focus on one character in one time period. It almost seemed to be "plotting by numbers", which is not something that is seen on "Lost" very often (and not since the third season). Hopefully this is just a momentary lull, setting things up for much better things to come. |

| Critical Myth Review: Lost 5.5: "This Place is Death" |
[Feb. 12th, 2009|07:35 pm] |

Review: Lost 5.5: "This Place is Death"
Overall, this episode restored the balance between emphasis on plot and character, even if the structure is less obvious than in past seasons. A lot happens along the way, and the stakes are raised in some surprising ways. The season is progressing at a blistering pace; if there was one complaint to make, it's how little time they get to spend on eras that deserve a lot more attention.

[Feb. 5th, 2009|08:39 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | blah | ] |

Review: Lost 5.4: "The Little Prince"
Overall, this episode was probably the weakest of the season thus far, based solely on the lack of cohesion. The revelations are still coming fast and furious, and that keeps this from slipping below the average mark, but the writers must continue to look for ways to adjust to the format changes they introduced in the premiere. Resolution is definitely welcome, but not at the expense of the series' strengths.

| Critical Myth Review: Lost 5.3: "Jughead" |
[Jan. 29th, 2009|08:00 pm] |

Review: Lost 5.3: "Jughead"
Overall, this was another solid early season episode for "Lost", continuing the stated mission of advancing the story while giving specific attention to bringing the apparent loose ends together into a reasonably logical tapestry. Connections and explanations are coming fast and furious now, and the fans that stuck with the show are being deeply rewarded.

| Back to the island? |
[Jan. 25th, 2009|01:36 pm] |
I've been thinking a bit about how the 6 (with a "dead" Locke in tow) eventually return to an island that, for all intents and purposes, has vanished. I have a couple of ideas floating around my mind, but this one seems the most "logical" (if you can call it that)...
In this scenario the people left on the island (Camp Sawyer) time travel back to a time when the hatch was in working order and OOPS! forget to type the numbers, thereby causing the island to blip on a radar screen somewhere (as I understand, this is how Penny found Des). The 6 are now able to find them. Obvious downside: Another plane or boat (Black Rock) crashes on the island due to the lack of number-punching, as in 815.
There has got to be a more coherent way of writing that, but I'm sure most of you get what I'm saying.
What do you think? Completely off? On to something? I'm all ears and eyes. |

[Jan. 22nd, 2009|08:56 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | curious | ] | Review: Lost 5.2: "The Lie"
Overall, this episode makes it very clear that the new format will work just fine, and that the writers know what they're doing. They managed to incorporate some character exploration into this episode, despite the many twists and turns, and that helps to calm any fears presented by the premiere.
