Mid-season recording [09 Jul 2009|09:10am]

It occurred to me last night as I was going to sleep that although I used to update this community with information about what we've been doing in rehearsals and whatnot, I somehow managed to fall off over the last year.  I think it was when we secretly added [info]katie_r_doherty  to the band.  Couldn't tell you what we were doing if it was supposed to be a surprise ;)  Anyway, let me see if I can't remedy this lack of  communication on my part....

A few months ago, we were put in contact with a local independent film company shooting a movie in our area.  They were looking for music for their soundtrack and ended up commissioning two songs from us--the 'theme' song for the movie (the one underlying the credits whose melody lines return in various places throughout the movie) and one for a death sequence.

We finished up writing the theme song, 'This is what you wanted,' a few weeks ago and bounced it to our wonderful producers, Keith and Jeremy of The Dreamscapes Project, for feedback.  We adjusted things a little and, last week, we recorded the bed with a click track.*  Once we have a good bed, revelrain goes through and makes the drums perfect, then we all add in our parts.

Last night was [info]katie_r_doherty 's first recording pass.  It was also, interestingly enough, the first time she's recorded at all.  She did really well, especially considering the mindset for recording is a little different than the one used for writing, rehearsing or performance.  The one bad thing about recording is that it places your part under a microscope--all the little tiny flaws and flubs that no one usually hears are suddenly audible.  It can be very frustrating.  Katie held up really well, though.  She told me later that she had a good time, so that's definitely a good start for this upcoming winter when we start on album # 2.

Tonight we add the bass, then lead, then vocals.  I'm really excited.  Our producers both said that this new song contains some of the best writing they've ever heard from us.

*A click track is a metronome the song is recorded to so we all stay at the same pace.  'This is what you wanted' is blessedly all the same beat.  'Wild' was a nightmare to record because the beat changes dramatically throughout the song.

The only downside to the evening?  I hit a deer on the way home.  Little bastard utterly destroyed my front right corner panel.  Hello, insurance company!  Did you miss me?  I swear my Element has some sort of invisible target painted on it....

Midsummer Festival!!! [13 May 2009|08:20am]

The Beltane Fires have risen and flourished.  The Wheel now moves on, into warmer, brighter days.  Where will you be come the longest day of the year?

Midsummer at The Cove is a full weekend of Earth-Centered spirituality and fun held in beautiful Gore, Virginia (right near Winchester, just an 80 minute drive from Washington, D.C.). Participants enjoy rituals, workshops, live music, drumming, dancing and so much more, all in an open, accepting, family-friendly environment. Our retreat attracts people from all backgrounds, orientations and walks of life. The only thing we ask is that you have an open mind and be nonjudgmental.  The Cove Campground offers swimming, hiking, fishing, hot showers and more. Leashed, well-behaved pets are welcome and a fishing license is not required since The Cove is privately owned. You are welcome to bring your own boat. Please note that The Cove does not allow gasoline motors and there is a personal boat launch fee of $10.00 per day.

The best part?  Midsummer at the Cove has some of the lowest rates for festival admission in the region.  We’ll even work with you on group rates if you’re bringing a lot of people—just drop us a line.

Featured events this year:

*TWO workshops and an open Q&A with Keynote Speaker Dorothy Morrison

 *A mead competition

*Live music by Cassandra Syndrome, The Dreamscapes Project, Matthew Buchanan, The Mathers Creek Band and Imakhu

*Workshops, workshops, workshops!!!  Sacred Bellydance, Mead Making, Qigong, Pagan Publishing,  Hypnosis, Property Warding, Metal Casting, Hellenismos, Money Magick….new workshops are still being added to the roster!

*Rituals in three different Traditions of Witchcraft!

 *Kicking drum circles and dancing

*Awesome vendors (still taking applications—just visit the website)

Never been to a festival?  Not sure what to pack?  We can even help you there—just visit the ‘About’ page on our website.
