Map Man
Good news for mapfans in the UK: the first edition of a TV series devoted to cartography starts on Thursday on BBC2.

Map Man is presented by Nicholas Crane, who once walked down England along a strip two degrees west of the Greenwich Meridian, and who has recently published a biography of Mercator.

I never knew of his hike along the Greenwich Meridian but I can, with great enthusiasm, recommend his biography on Mercator

Thanks: I own it but haven't yet got round to reading it. Two Degrees West is a slightly flat narrative - perhaps he discovered only too late that it isn't a very interesting constraint, but once you've started, you may as well get a book out of it (-:

I've read Two Degrees West and Clear Waters Rising (his previous book, chronicling an 18-month trek from Finisterre to Istanbul through the mountain ranges of Europe). Both were fascinating.

To be frank, he manages to look a bit of a muppet in many of the photos, however, so I'm not sure how well he'll come across on TV. With a bit of luck he'll be another great British televisual eccentric, whose charisma is derived from his passion for his subject — a cartographic Patrick Moore or Adam Hart Davis.

Unfortunately, I don't have TV. This is one of that tiny handful of occasions each year on which I'm disappointed to be missing something.
