GNEW
I want to thank the people of Carolingia and our allies for turning out so strongly for Carolingia in the recent Great Northeastern War. Sir Anghaus de Brus our Champion and Lord Valerian our Knight Marshal led our troops valiantly to take all the fighting war points. Our special thanks to our allies of Lochleven, Von Drakenklaue, and the Priory who fought with us. The populace and champions of Carolingia took all the archery points as well: special thanks to our archery champions Master Mark Squirrelsbane, Master Krakken Gnashbone, Lord Radegast, Genevieve the Red, and Master Li Kung Lo, who won the championship. On behalf of the next generation, Eric Michaelson won the youth archery. For the first time Thrown Weapons for the populace and champions accounted for war points, both won by Carolingia, the championship won by Lord Sigurd Danski. Only one brave Carolingian lad turned out to fight all the Malagentians in the Youth Combat, vivat to William Grey of Lochleven who is following courageously in his sire's footsteps. Our fencers and allies, under the command of Captain Anssem van Rienen acquitted themselves well, with six new people learning the pleasure of making melee mayhem, and winning the fencing tournament. Past baronial champions Lord Cristovau Vasquez and Master Peregrine won the bardic competition. Our artisans Lord Hugh Tauerner, Mistress Caryl de Trecesson, Mistress Ygraine of Kellswood, Lady Isabel of Greenwood Isle and Lady Juliana Osborne all entered notable works in the A&S contest, and Lord Hugh entered the brewing contest for the first time. The brewing was won by Master Ludwig von Eisenberg of Havre des Glaces, who declared for Carolingia this year. Many others taught classes and took them in the advancement of knowledge. We shopped, but our opponents wielded their wallets more vigorously In Royal court, our own skald, Master Kali Harlansson was honored with a big rock, marking his induction into the Order of the Troubadour. In Carolingian court all these gentles were honored, and in addition, Lady Isabel of Greenwood Isle was inducted into the Order of the Daystar.

It was a weekend of many triumphs and pleasures, great and small, topped with blessedly beautiful weather. In two short weeks we will all be allies again in the great Pennsic war. Fight hard, work together, and have fun! We look forward to seeing you all at the Carolingian Welcome Night party on Saturday, August 1.

Henry V reprise
The Carolingian Mummers will be staging an encore performance of Henry V at the Buttery Birthday party this Saturday, starting at 3pm. You can find directions here.

So if you missed the first performance, or want to see it again, you should come by on Saturday, and in the bargain, end up at a great party to boot.

[OT] Volunteers for The Wrathskellar
Haven't gotten enough theater yet?

The Boston Babydolls newest show, The Wrathskellar, is coming to The Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown, July 11-19 and we want your help!  You can read more about the show here.

We're looking for people to:
  • help promote the show over the next couple of weeks by distributing flyers and posters.  This is pretty easy; you get a handful of posters and postcards and you leave them in places you usually go anyway.  If you want to be part of the street team, please e-mail Caroline {at} BostonBabydolls //dot// net or leave a comment.
  • help build a few simple set pieces over the next few weeks.  This is perfect for someone who's artsy or handy -- or who wants to learn to be.  None of this requires special skills, just some patience and attention to detail.
  • help during the show by being ushers and ticket takers. This is a great job if you've only got one or two nights to help out.
  • help during the show by being stage crew. Ideally, we'd be looking for someone who can make a commitment to the entire run.
All volunteers get to come and see the show for free, of course, and people who go above and beyond get special treats like T-shirts and more!

OT: Who's going to Worldcon this summer, possibly instead of Pennsic?
Is anyone planning to skip Pennsic for Worldcon? (I know, I know, tough choices!)

I'm running the staff den for Worldcon in Montreal, aka Anticipation this August. [info]londo and [info]crazybone are my trusty lieutenants. I know a couple Carolingians have casually offered to help out, as well. Now's a good time to remind me, because I'm working on menu planning and schedules and all sorts of things. This will be run very similarly to my staff den at Arisia -- the numbers are similar for staff, but the weekend is longer. My (evolving) plan is available on the Anticipation hospitality wiki, if that's publicly viewable.Job descriptions, etc. )

I want to keep this sane, and fun. I've never been to a Worldcon before, and I want to have fun along with everyone else. Hence, planning to only use volunteers for one meal a day, if we can keep to that. Step right up, folks, and volunteer! [info]liamstliam, among others, can vouch for it being fun to work with me! :)

Carolingians ROCK
It was an event. A play was performed. There was an official chirurgeon present, so, of course, no one else was injured. 115 people ate dinner, that many minus the actors watched the show.

Thank you Rufinia - for going above and beyond with rather less of yourself than expected. The food was excellent; everyone must have agreed - they ate it all!

Thank you Eowyn - for being ever useful, reminding me of things I needed to remember, and making things appear and disappear.

Thank you Eleanor - for running a Gate I never had to worry about.

Thank you Caitlin - for doing Finance.

Thank you Justin - for hollering.

Thank you Catriona - for being a Good Seneschale.

And.....a really GIANT thank you to the more than 30 individuals who helped tear down and move mountains of stuff back onto the stage and put away all those tables and chairs. That was, I think, the most magnificent clean-up effort I have ever seen at an SCA event. Twenty minutes and almost everything was done. That was incredible to see.

Looking for tent canvas strips/scraps
(I will be posting on the Carolingia list as well, so I apologize to anyone who is getting this twice.)

I am currently looking for canvas to create a sod flap on my pre-existing tent. It is only 9x9, so I do not need much in the way of length. I'm hoping that there's someone local to the Boston area (or possibly NH/Maine) who has unused scraps or yardage from a tent making project that they've been hanging on to but didn't know what to do with :)
Ultimately I need about 40 feet of 1' wide canvas or some configuration that can be made in to that. I'd love to have something like Sunforger, but basically anything better than the cotton canvas from JoAnns would be lovely.

Thanks!

anyone need a tent?
Our new tent is smaller than I thought it would be, so our brand new 10x12 Panther Trader tent is for sale, along with the set-up kit and super ground cloth (canvas ground cloth backed by blue tarp), in a brand new Rubbermaid tub, for $1100. It will have been used once at the time of sale (I need it for Panteria). I'll even deliver within 75-100 miles of Lawrence, MA.

I can accept credit cards if necessary.

Henry V - Dinner and Shakespeare, June 6 from 5-10pm
O for a Muse of fire, that would ascend
The brightest heaven of invention,
A kingdom for a stage, princes to act
And monarchs to behold the swelling scene!"

-- Henry V, Prologue
William Shakespeare

The Barony of Carolingia bid you join us on June 6, 2009 from 5 - 10pm in a delectable buffet and an evening of bardic theater to entertain.

http://www.henrythefifth.org

Baroness Aurelia Rufinia will begin the evening with a tantalizing Elizabethan repast from her kitchen including a menu of rabbit pies and various other delights.
Following the meal, settle in as the Baronial players present William Shakespeare’s “Henry the Fifth”, directed by Duke Vissevald Selkirksson (first thought to have been performed in The Globe and definitely early on in the Court of King James I of England around 1604).

OT: SCAdian looking for crash space...for a trailer
Greetings, good gentles!

The Honorable Lord Timothy of Edgewood is an AEthelmearc subject who mundanely runs a business as a merchant at art trade shows. He's coming into Boston for Anime Boston on Memorial Day weekend and he's looking for a place where he can leave his van and trailer after he's unloaded at Hynes.

It doesn't matter where the parking place is (he'll take a cab back and then again to get the van when they're ready to leave), but the lot where he traditionally parks has a. jacked up its prices and b. charges him double (for the van and the trailer), so he would love to find another spot to leave the car for the weekend. He's willing to negotiate a price, as well.

Anyone with suggestions or preferably a driveway he could borrow please contact him at timothy @ pruitt.com (or reply to me and I'll forward it to him). Thanks!

Council Reminder: April 6, 7:15 pm, MIT 4-163
Cross-posting here because I have heard that people with Comcast email are not getting their emails today!

Council this month (the first Monday of every month), will occur April 6 in MIT Room 4-163 at 7:15 pm.

***Note: This month is the twice-yearly event planning session, and will also be followed by a meeting of the Order of the Daystar.***

Please consult the MIT website for directions: http://whereis.mit.edu/

Carolingian Great Council is the business meeting of the group. Officers of the Barony present information about goings on in the Barony. The general populace is welcome, and may make announcements or comments during the meeting as well (or just listen). Business of the Barony (expenditures, event planning, etc.) are often discussed at Council. Unofficial votes and commentary often serve to inform the Seneschal in making decisions. Official votes of the officers infrequently occur regarding decisions of high import, such as selection of a new Baron and Baroness or Seneschal. These occurrences shall be well publicized in advance.

A reminder to please try to contact me by Sunday 10 pm if you have business that you would like brought before Council. I have very limited access to my email during the work day, and I cannot accept personal calls at work.

If needed, you can leave a message on my cell phone during the day of Council or find me in the room before Council begins.

In service,

Caitriona
Seneschal

Monday, April 6: Event Planning at April Council
Greetings!

There are two regular scheduling meetings in Carolingia: one in April, one in October. Proposals may be made at other times, but it is recommended that they are made at these times to help alleviate schedule crowding. A proposal does not need to have all details in place.

People considering running events should consult with the Seneschal for guidelines and suggestions early on. They need not have many details initially, but they can benefit during their planning from information that only the Seneschal may know.

If you wish to propose an event at Council on April 6th, please let me know ahead of time to put you on the agenda. I will also have with me a few paper copies of the preliminary proposal form and the Autocrat's Checklist.

The current calendar of Carolingian events is as follows:

May 3: May Day
June 6: Henry V
August 23: Archery/TW Champs
September 12: Feast of Divine Proportions

Fall: Possible Crown Tourney bid
