So here's the deal. I would absolutely LOVE to attend Carleton next year, and I just have a few questions on how to make that dream possible.
First, how many teacher recommendations are you supposed to have? As many as you can get? And is any weight given to who the teacher is? I saw someone's post about how they got recs from esteemed teachers or something like that.. and the teachers I have so far are really excellent but I'm not sure if Carleton would think so?
Also, on the application there's that spot for any "Extra information." I heard that it is bad to leave areas like that blank, but I'm not sure what exactly I should write there or how it should be structured (essay vs. one paragraph, formal vs. informal, etc.). I feel like I should write something there to prove to them that I really, really want to attend Carleton, but I'm not sure how to do that.
Does it help you to apply ED? I need all the help I can get because I don't have very many extracurriculars (I've been in debate for 4 years and it literally takes over my life and I can never join anything else). I could list some community service things that I've done for NHS but I don't know if they would count because I only did each of them once.
Finally, everyone always says the essay is the most important part. I originally wrote mine on a teacher that I had for three years who really did change my life, but now I'm considering changing it because I heard that the prompt about a person who had a significant influence on you is really overdone and can get really boring to read. Any thoughts? I'm hoping that as long as the essay is well-written it won't matter, but I just don't want to be cliche.

hi guys...
i'm a current high school senior starting the college admissions process. i just discovered carleton a few weeks ago, but it's very quickly becoming one of my top choices.
here's my issue: it's a huge reach school for me. does anyone have any insight on how i could possibly improve my chances, or anything? i think the college itself would really fit me -- my GPA/SAT/etc just don't match the expectations.
i'm trying really hard to show that i'm really intelligent and dedicated outside of my "numbers," but it's difficult... i'm afraid of this entire process! aahhh!
( just for reference, here's what i have )
also, another thing: anyone here a theatre major? i would be majoring in theatre with a concentration in educational studies. i'm curious about the department.

This is a shout out to any writers in the incoming freshman class.
Jaye Lawrence here, from the Web Services Group at Carleton. One of my freshman student workers has withdrawn from Carleton, which leaves me with a student job to fill. I'm looking for a talented writer to cover Carleton student life from a first-year student's point of view. This is a freshman workstudy job, 8 hours/week, very flexible scheduling. | Deciding between Wesleyan, Carleton & Oberlin |

I'm a prospective student who is trying to choose between Oberlin, Carleton & Wesleyan. Did any of you consider Wesleyan & Oberlin? How did you decide on Carleton? What makes you glad (or sorry) that you did?
I'm interested in Classics, English (including Creative Writing), and History. How hard is it to get into the Creative Writing classes? Any comments or opinions on these departments?

So I appealed to the financial aid office, and they actually gave me aid. Enough to make it manageable. I was SO surprised and I think I'm in love with whoever made that decision.

(oh, and, I guess, introduction: I'm a girl from a public school in Massachusetts, into history, creative writing, watching too many movies, learning too many languages, being a geek about various things... and I am currently receiving donations of sweaters and hats and etc. from my friends who knit. :D)

I've been accepted to Carleton for the class of 2012 and I have a few questions as I try to decide:
1) I wrote in my notes during a campus tour that there wasn't much wireless on campus, but I visited over 1 1/2 years ago. How much wireless is there now? Are there outdoor, pretty spaces with wireless where one can study?
2) In reading one of the promotional pieces from the Admission Office, one student said that she was getting a B in a class but she was able to quickly get a tutor and bring her grade up. That makes it sound like Carleton is strongly focused on grades and that people freak if they get a B. Is that the case?
3) Any opinions about Creative Writing classes? Classics?

| Hacking tradition at Carleton? |

I read somewhere that Carleton used to have a strong hacking tradition but that the administration has cracked down on it. My brother is at MIT and I have enjoyed their style of hacking. (By which I mean climbing on rooftops, getting into places you aren't really supposed to be, harmless and intelligent pranks - not computer hacking). I'd love to get involved in this type of activity, but I certainly don't want to get kicked out of school. What is the current situation?

Hey everyone! I've been accepted to Carleton and I really really want to go. However, I didn't get any financial aid at all, and my parents just can't afford to send me if I don't get some kind of help other than loans (I would end up more than $100,000 in debt). Has anyone here successfully negotiated with the financial aid office?
Also, is anyone here an anthropology major? I'm specifically interested in archaeology (among like, many many other potential majors) and I'm wondering about the program because I haven't heard anything one way or the other. (I'm also interested in history, foreign languages and film, in case anyone else wants to say anything about those programs.)

If someone here is interested enough to (print out and) put up flyers for me, I have some. The Career Center has promised to do some publicity but I'm not sure how efficient they will be at it -- they got the title of the talk wrong, and for a while they even were under the impression that I'm some sort of recruiter -- very strange.
Also, what are the other places I should think of advertising this on-line?

I was curious about the statistics of honors graduates from Carleton. It is quite possible that I didn't look hard enough, but nothing turned up using the site's search (yes, I know it leaves something to be desired, I just wasn't in the mood to go on a wild goose chase around the site). Anybody know where to find recent data on the percentage of students that graduate with honors?

Here in CANOE house we are trying to piece together the lyrics to the Carleton version of Stolaf's fight song. I realize that this topic has been discussed in this forum some years ago, in this post. However, that thread didn't produce very much in the way of verses, though someone acknowledged in the comments that at least four exist. We've compiled three verses--two complete and one questionably congruous--here at CANOE, and want MORE. Below is what we have gleaned so far, mostly thanks to the guys' cross-country team.

Lakeville crash victim identified
Posted: 9/12/07
The Minnesota State Patrol identified the man who was killed in a single-car rollover on Interstate 35 the morning of Sept. 6 as Ioannis “John” Pitsavas, 32, of Northfield.
The crash closed the highway’s southbound lanes for more than three hours just before rush hour.
The Pitsavas family owns Basil’s Pizza on Water Street in Northfield.

I worked for John (at least I think it was John, I don't remember any brothers) for one summer in Northfield while his notorously crabby father was off in Greece. He was a good man, and a good boss.
