Friday Film

  • May. 14th, 2009 at 1:40 PM
Hey you lot!

Feeling the exam strain? Want some time out from revising and panicking about exams? We've got a Friday Film for you. The room is booked, Birt Acres Lecture Theatre, as usual, and we'd love to see you there.

The film we proposed was Skellig, adapted from David Almond's fantasy book, but in the end we didn't conduct a vote, so the choice is open. Bring along a DVD you want to watch on the big screen and we'll vote on the night.

So there we are. Film. Friday. 6.30. Birt Acres.

As everyone probably knows by now, the new Star Trek movie opens on Wednesday, and since the showing times that day are ridiculous (ONE showing at like midnight on Wednesday, what's up with that?), we're looking at going to see it at the Cineworld in town at 5:30 on Saturday instead.

Who's interested? If enough people confirm, I'm willing to try to book tickets to make sure we all get in.

~

Secondly, something that would have been brought up at Sci Fi last night is the subject of a Friday movie. Chris is too busy to be organising them during exams, but I'm willing to get it all sorted if people are interested. So, who would come along to a movie on Friday night this week, and what movie would you suggest? My own suggestion is the Sky One adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Hogfather or, since it is fantasy, the adaptation of David Almond's Skellig that was on TV over Easter. What does everyone else feel about it?

Hey folks,

Sorry for not using the official address when I sent out the email earlier, but I'm on a library computer and can't remember the password. (And there's no phone reception down here, so I can't get hold of anyone else who knows.)

The film this Friday will be Plan 9 From Outer Space, showing from 6:30 at the Birt Acres lecture theatre in Bute Building.

Also, anyone who wants to raise any proposals at the Sci Fi AGM on the 24th of April should please write them down, find someone to second them and give them to Chris ahead of time.

See you Friday!
~Bethan

Tomorrow evening some of us are planning on going to see Watchmen at Cineworld at 7.45pm. Feel free to join us if you're free. We're planning on meeting at the cinema at about 7.30pm.

I should also mention that the film is quite violent, so if you're not comfortable with that then perhaps you should give it a miss.

Hope to see you there.

Cardiff Sci-fi Society Hoodies 08-09

  • Mar. 3rd, 2009 at 12:28 PM
Yep, it's that time of year again!

Hoodie options under the cut )

Along with the sci-fi logo, the society name and year each person can also get a name embroidered on the hoodie too. See current members hoodies for examples of nicknames, phrases or names you can have.

We shall be ordering from a company called Cardiff Embroidery. Prices for the hoodies will most likely be between £10 and £15 as the society will subsidise some of the cost. I won't know how much by until I get numbers for how many people want hoodies this year. As we've got a smaller budget than usual it'll probably be more towards the £15 end though.

If you’re interested in having a hoodie please comment here with your name, the size and colour of the hoodie and what you want embroidered on it. You can also e-mail me with the details at hyadum(at)hotmail.co.uk.

I need the details by the 31st of March as I'll need to order just after then. Payment will be due pretty much straight after the Easter holidays.

Friday etc.

  • Feb. 24th, 2009 at 6:56 PM
Hello Everyone

This Friday instead of a film we're going to be showing two episodes of Doctor Who "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" at 6.30pm in the Birt Acres lecture theatre in the Bute Building.

If you're planning on running for any of the committee positions for next year and want to have your manifesto sent to the rest of the society, we're going to need you to send it to us by this weekend at the latest. Any manifesto's received after this weekend will only be made available on the society website and not via the weekly email.

See you on Friday

Chris

As you may or may not have heard, the Union AGM is happening on Monday night at 6:30, since people walking out meant the last one ended with business unfinished. Once again, every society needs to bring at least five members (NOT necessarily exec) in order to avoid having its budget frozen. However, there are prizes of between (if memory serves) £300-£100 for the three societies who bring the most members to the AGM.

Since Monday is our meeting night, I would like to suggest the following: as many Sci Fi members as possible turn up to the AGM at 6:30, in this way ensuring we keep our budget -- and it'll also be more interesting if we all sit together, as we can whisper, doodle etcetera. Plus, with any luck we'll then get the prize money, and could perhaps use it for some variety of society trip, maybe to a convention or to something in London.

If people then want to leave at 7:30 to go to Milgi, they can feel free.

PS - If you do come, ensure you have your student ID on you - they scan them at the entrance to the AGM.

Hey folks,

This Friday's movie is Little Shop of Horrors from 6:30 in Bute Building's Birt Acres lecture theatre.

Sorry for not putting everyone's email address in the Bcc field of the group email last week, folks: turns out sending an email when about to run for class is a bad idea. Who knew?

Don't forget about your manifestos for exec positions! You still have ten days left to send them in.

Later!

Red Dwarf...

  • Feb. 4th, 2009 at 11:02 PM
Of interest to some, as we (mostly) already know, Red Dwarf is coming back for four Specials this year, set to be airing in April.

Here I bring you (behind a cut because it's bloody massive!) the promo shot for the new short series...

Cut for Massive Pic )

The thing that struck us ([info]niblick_iii, [info]bethan_b_bad and me) about the photo is how much they all look exactly the same as they always did. Maybe a little greyer at the temples, slightly more wrinkles, but for ten years since the last time they were all together in costume, they aren't half doing badly... You can't really tell with Bobby, but then you never could. The mask prevents such a thing obviously. That said, as far as his twitterpics go he isn't looking half bad under the big rubber face either!

Much love to them all, and many congrats, as well as fingers crossed for a new series if all goes well, and I hope it does.

Hey guys,

Seeing as I'm technically secretary, it's about time that I took over this job. So here I am, taking over it.

This Friday's film will be Galaxy Quest at 6:30pm in the Birt Acres lecture theatre, Bute building.

AGM Reminder: all those interested in standing for a committee position within the society need to send in their manifestos to the Sci Fi email address (in other words, this one) by the 1st of March so that it can be sent to the rest of the society and put up on the society website. If you're still undecided about standing for a position, you can put yourself forward for a position up until the evening of the AGM, but the rest of the society will not be able to see your manifesto beforehand.

See you Friday!
