Sometimes I think that I have a problem because I get a warm fuzzy feeling when Dukat or Garak graces my television screen, then I remember this group exists.

So, what do you think is the percentage of people who follow this comm who are also members of doctor, tailor? I'd guess, like, almost everyone? So, if it has to do with Garak as opposed to Dukat or Damar, does it make any sense to x-post here from doctor, tailor (which seems to be a more active comm), or does it border on spam-ishness?

I'd guess there aren't too many people who here who don't also follow doctor, tailor, so if it's been posted there, you've already seen it. Are there other nuances of difference between the two comms I should be aware of?

Inquiring minds want to know...

I have a rather strange question. I'm looking for songs that fans might associate with Garak. I've already been told:

If anybody knows of songs that could have association with Garak, I'd be totally stoked!

Thoughts on Dukat, Paternalism, Bajor, Ziyal, and the Pah-wraiths

Taking a break from my usual incessant fanviding for a bit (okay, a rather long bit) of analysis.

I was initially incredibly upset about what the writers did with Dukat from "Tears of the Prophets" on through Season 7. He was such a complex and well developed villain, and then it seemed that the writers threw that all away to make him the simplistic/archetypical evil to Sisko's (incredibly annoying) self-righteous good. (Along these lines, seriously, WHY does everyone think the Prophets are such morally wonderful entities? The only nice thing they've ever done for Bajor was stopping a few Dominion ships, and even then they took convincing.)

Then I got to thinking about Dukat's possible motives for the whole thing, and while I still wish the writers hadn't gone this direction with his character, things began to make more sense.

What we know, and how I interpret it:

1) During the Occupation, Dukat felt a sense of paternalism and an almost obsessive need to be loved by the Bajoran people (he considered the Bajorans his errant children even after they tried to kill him multiple times [Things Past], and while other Cardassians took Bajoran comfort women primarily for...well, comfort...he seemed to truly want and even need their love and devotion [Wrongs Darker...]).

2) He honestly seems to think that the Bajoran people should be grateful for what he did "for them." (Dukat to Weyoun in Sacrifice of Angels: "Perhaps the biggest disappointment in my life is that the Bajoran people still refuse to appreciate how lucky they were to have me as their liberator. I protected them in so many ways--cared for them as if they were my own children. But to this day, is there a single statue of me on Bajor?")

3) He loves Ziyal enough to risk his entire position in Cardassian society for her [Indiscretion, Return to Grace]. She is a perfect example of everything he has wanted from the Bajoran people: when he sees her, he sees the product of his union with a Bajoran woman whom he at least thinks loved him, and he sees in Ziyal the unconditional love and devotion he always craved from the Bajoran people, and the adoption of Cardassian culture (in the form of her appearance, art, etc). While I think the love he feels for her really is genuine, I also think that his fatherly affection for Ziyal is something of a microcosm for his general paternalistic attitude towards Bajor.

4) Cut to Ziyal's betrayal of him and subsequent death. While he said he forgave her and I do believe he did to a large degree, I doubt that a Cardassian can completely forgive anyone or anything given their eidetic memory. The pain of Ziyal's betrayal, combined with the pain of losing the last remaining symbol of Bajor's love for him, unhinged him completely and drove him to seek vengeance on the entire Bajoran people (Dukat to Sisko in Waltz: "I should've killed every last one of them! I should've turned their planet into a graveyard the likes of which the galaxy had never seen! I should've killed them all.") He sees the opportunity to do this by using the Pah-wraiths [Tears of the Prophets].

5) But things don't quite work out as planned. Instead of just using the Pah-wraiths to get his revenge, Dukat begins to truly believe in them as the True Prophets of Bajor, and himself as their Emissary. Where does that put Dukat? Why, back into the position of being the "father of Bajor." No wonder the Pah-wraiths found it so easy to turn him into a true believer -- it turned him into what he has wanted to be all along:

Anyway, that's my attempt at understanding 7th season Dukat.

Finally, a conversation that essentially sums up Dukat's worldview (from Sacrifice of Angels):

WEYOUN: Then our first step is to eradicate [Earth's] population. It's the only way.
DUKAT: You can't do that!
WEYOUN: Why not?
DUKAT: Because! A true victory is to make your enemies see that they were wrong to oppose you in the first place! To force them to acknowledge your greatness!
WEYOUN: Then you kill them?
DUKAT (offhand): Only if it's necessary.
WEYOUN: I had no idea.
