Quirky Space-Pun Title! [INCOMPLETE]
WHO: Bucky and Blue Beetle
WHERE: Roof of a department store of your liking.
WHEN: Tues, Jan 13 evening
WARNINGS: What
FORMAT: Whatever we want >:U
SUMMARY: BUCKY IN SPAAAACE.

Somewhere smashed in with all the hectic happenings of being a superhero in the City (crumbling bridges, giant cockroaches, the Joker scare) and of just trying to maintain a normal identity (the car shop job, new part-time classes, moving two more housemates in), there was one event that stuck out in particular. Particularly, because for one, it didn't involve Jaime getting beat up, and for another, it involved space. A while ago, when he'd found a mass of butchered bodies, Bucky was the first one to respond, and one of the ones who kept him on the line talking, keeping him from panicking. Somewhere in the conversation, space had popped up.

'If you really want, I could take you up. Space, I mean. The suit can make a space-safe field, so...'

'Really? You'd do that for
me?'

'Well. It's like...Not a huge thing--for me. But. I wouldn't mind so.'

Jaime didn't mind. Actually, he felt he kind of owed the guy for helping him out. And space flight really wasn't a hassle on his end--the Scarab could sustain him perfectly find in the vacuum for as long as he needed, and had done so several times. And the more time passed from the time of the agreement, the more compelled he became to act on it. Don't make promises you can't keep, and all.

Eventually, the topic resurfaced and times were exchanged. A little later, Jaime came up with the place--one of the smaller department stores had painfully easy roof access. It was less conspicuous than lifting off from the ground, but not so remotely out of the way as the city limits. He'd sent the directions out to Bucky, as well as a general time. Somehow, he'd ended up with a lot of free time that evening. It just worked out that way.

He paced around, halfway between full armor, while keeping his jacket in tact. Abby'd gone to the trouble of buying it, so he was pretty intent on not wrecking it suiting up. That way, he wouldn't have the cold to grumble about while he waited, and the Scarab wouldn't have to bicker back at him about it. Win-win.

Bucky still wasn't used to the rooftops: his job involved more dirt and pebbles, grass and mud, things it was hard to wash out. Not that he was afraid of heights-- obviously. It was just something that struck him as he climbed up the ladder, the metal rungs stinging his hands with the cold. When he got to the top he could see that Jaime was waiting for him, halfway in some crazy space get-up, halfway something more sensible.

"Hey," he said, shoving his hands into his jacket pockets. "I hope I didn't need to wear anything special."

Space, he was thinking. Oh man, oh man.

"Oh--" Jaime turned when he heard the voice. He gave a small wave. "Hey--huh? Oh, no, hah...Don't worry. Force fields are equal-opportunity barriers."

He gave a sheepish smile, tugging his own jacket off and folding it up, pausing and glancing around for a place to stash it. Shoulda thought of that before. For lack of better places, he popped the roof door open and set the coat on the ground, scratching at the back of his head.

"Nobody oughta show up and gank a coat off a roof stairwell in the middle of the night, huh?" he mused, looking back over at Bucky with a shrug.

"Oh--" the thought struck him out of nowhere. "You don't get motion sick or anything, do you?"

"I guess I'll have to take your word on that one, huh?" He watched Jaime's jacket as it fell to the ground. "You have done this before, right? Aw hell, who'm I kidding, I'd still go."

Bucky looked up at the sky for a second-- it was just beginning to go black. "I don't think so. I mean, I don't get seasick, and I flew across the Hump a couple of times no problem." Well, he felt his skull vibrating for a good half-hour after that last one, but why sweat the small stuff? This was the future, planes probably buzzed a bit less. And besides, they weren't using a plane.

Jaime nodded a little. "Just checking." Now, it'll really be awesome if I don't get sick doing this.

Based on previous experience, likelihood: 63%.

...Thanks.

The armor that had already formed across his arms and neck began to steadily spread and cover the rest of his body until he was all blue and black. Once the backpiece's 'legs' had finished wrapping over his shoulders and abdomen, the large, semi-transparent insect wings formed.

"We don't have to fly so fast at the get-go," he explained awkwardly, "but I'm gonna have to switch to rocket flight to break through the atmosphere. It's really fast, so..."

"Don't worry about it. I can take a lot." He smiled a bit off-center.

Watching the blue stuff creepy-crawly its way across Jaime's torso, Bucky came to a realization. Oh god, this was gonna be like when Namor had to pick him up and carry him places, wasn't it? Sure, Bucky had figured there might be some man-on-man carrying action, but now he was facing the distinct possibility that this was gonna look awful swishy.

"So, how's this work, exactly?" he asked, trying to keep a level tone. "My experience with alien technology's been pretty limited to the stuff the Nazis got hold of, up to this point."

Jaime was thinking aroundabout the same way Bucky was. He'd never really carried anyone out into orbit before--sure, lifting people out of a situation or whatever, but. Well, he wasn't going to try to think about that more than he needed to.

At Bucky's inquiry, he blinked and tilted his head a little, cracking a smile. "Not very familiar with Nazi-owned alien tech, but all I gotta do is keep a hold on you, and the Scarab will keep the forcefield up. So, uh, however you want to hang on, I guess...except not on behind, 'cause that's where the rocket is, so..."

"Yeah, well, to tell the truth, I don't think Hitler was all that familiar, neither." He took a step back to consider his predicament. "I couldn't just hang on to your feet, could I?"

Hands went up in a gesture of surrender. "Just do what you gotta do, alright? Lemme know when you're ready."

"Not getting any younger, I guess," Jaime remarked, lifting off to a small hover. "Sorry I don't have any cool catch-phrases for flying or anything. Nothing I've tried really stuck."

He lifted Bucky up by the waist and rose up and away from the roof at a gradually increasing pace. The higher they went, the colder it got, and the thinner the air. After a certain point, the suit began to glow, and a thin, blue field enveloped both of them, cutting the cold.

"This is the cool part," Jaime announced. The wings disappeared, and they dropped altitude a little until the rocket formed and hummed to life, sending them rocketing upwards much, much faster.

The colors outside of them were moving quicker and quicker through the curtain of blue, until they all bled together and disappeared. Bucky's stomach caught a bit when they started go faster, and he tried to focus on what was going on around him so he didn't get sick. Not that it was hard.

"Shit," he said, when he finally got hold of his breath. "This is so much better'n just jumping out of planes. God, is that what earth looks like?"

"Not sure about the plane-jumping," Jaime said with a little laugh. Just a little further, and they broke through the atmosphere, and the pull against the Earth greatly decreased. His grip on Bucky loosened and shifted, grabbing hold of his forearm and pulling him a ways for a couple minutes. Eventually, he swung him around to face the planet underfoot. The sun was peeking through on the other side just a bit, creating a kind of halo at the edges. It'd take a really, really jaded person not to be impressed.

"There it is."

"It gets old after a while. But it's sorta neat to fall and actually realize you're falling. I mean, normally you hit the ground before you can ever get a chance to--"

It was pretty weird to feel his legs swinging without any weight in them, but that wasn't anything close to the nothingness he felt seeing the arc of the sky from above. Because Bucky wasn't jaded, at least not in that way; he still liked sappy speeches and Christmas and the smell of the earth after it rained. Not that he ever told anyone. Not that he said anything else right then.

Jaime didn't bother to ask Bucky to finish what he was saying. It wasn't that important, by comparison. He wondered down at the blots of green, white, and blue below. Everyone's problems were all down there, and from where they drifted, they were invisible.

"Makes you feel a little smaller, huh?" he said aloud, to both Bucky and himself.

"Well, I'm sort of used to it, but yeah. Yeah." Bucky waited just a second more before speaking, because it was awful quiet. The kind of quiet you don't get to hear very often. The kind of quiet that distracted him from all his previous misgivings about how queer this still probably looked.

"Thanks for doing this, you know. You didn't have to."

"It's no big deal," Jaime replied, shrugging a little. Then, a bit sheepishly, "Well, I mean. Aside from the whole in space thing. But it's not like it was hard to do, so..."

Stop talking.

He sighed a bit, arching his back a bit to straighten and have his feet hover over far-away Argentina. It was pretty good--having more than one experience in space that didn't involve almost getting blown up or attacked by a crazy alien planet's robot defense system.

After a few more minutes, he glanced back over. "Do a quick loop around the planet and then head back?"
