AboutThis is a community for people who either have been diagnosed with or think they have central auditory processing disorder, also known by its abbreviation CAPD.
I know, you're probably asking what in the world CAPD is. Essentially, it's a "hearing impairment" that's not in the ear itself, but in the nervous system. It's a neurological condition in which auditory information is garbled in the brain: although physical hearing is perfectly fine, processing of the auditory information is not.
There are numerous articles out there on the web that describe CAPD in more detail; here are a selection of them:
As you might imagine, having an auditory processing disorder can be quite frustrating (and the community maintainer is saying this from experience!)... and considering how many times I've seen the topic brought up in communities related to other neurological conditions, I figured it was about time that LiveJournal had a community for CAPD. So here it is.

Because many of us have processing issues with visual as well as auditory information, we urge you to keep the following guidelines in mind when posting to this community:

- Judith Paton's Living and Working with CAPD, posted at Learning Disabilities Online, is probably one of the best articles on the subject. There are a number of other articles also offered on the LDOnline site.
- A fairly good summary and link list can be found at About.com's deafness site.

- Still another good summary, written from wakasplat's first-person point of view, can be found at autistics.org.

Because many of us have processing issues with visual as well as auditory information, we urge you to keep the following guidelines in mind when posting to this community:
- No distracting icons. Subtle animation generally is fine, but rapidly flashing icons can be troublesome for many of us here.
- No walls of text. Many of us have trouble reading huge paragraphs; paragraph breaks are a Good Thing. Otherwise, you may end up with many members simply skipping your post, no matter how useful it is. In addition, if your post is particularly long, we encourage you to use an LJ-cut.
- Use standard fonts and colors. Using formatting on the occasional word is fine, but don't set your entire post in something like blue italic Comic Sans. The same goes for EXCESSIVE CAPS LOCK; using all caps on the occasional word is OK, but sentences and paragraphs in all caps are not.
- Use spell check, if possible. It's built into most browsers and is offered by LiveJournal's server as well. Many of us have trouble deciphering misspelled words, so this also eases readability.
- Play nice. Polite disagreement is OK; fights are not.
