The Washington Science Fiction Association (WSFA) is pleased to announce that the 8th annual Capclave will be held the weekend of October 17-19, 2008 at the Rockville Hilton and Executive Meeting Center at 1750 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD.
Capclave is the science fiction convention produced by WSFA. This year's author guest of honor is James Morrow and the critic guest of honor is former Washington Post critic Michael Dirda.
We are pleased to announce that once again we have a full schedule of workshops in addition to the usual panels, filking, parties, consuite and dealers room.
Allan Wold has once again agreed to conduct his popular writers workshop for us.
A contracts workshop will be taught by Jane Jewell, Executive Director of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
Tee Morris will be holding a workshop on podcasting.
A workshop on how to write reviews will be taught by author Peter Heck, whose reviews have appeared in publications such as the Washington Post Book World.
You can sign up for a workshop in advance by e-mailing our head of programming at program@capclave.org. You can also sign up at the convention.
Capclave memberships are $60 for the whole weekend, $25 for Friday only, $40 for Saturday only, and $25 for Sunday only.

| Confluence Party, Friday Night, Jim & Laurie Mann's Room, 9-11 |
[Oct. 10th, 2007|11:50 am] |
We're running a party for Confluence, the Pittsburgh regional con, Friday night from 9-11 (it might last a little later, depending on how my insomnia is behaving). The party will feature Pittsburgh beers and snacks. I bought an assorted case of Penn Brewery beers, some black and gold chips, Sarris' chocolate covered pretzels and some non-Pittsburgh snacks, too.
I don't know what our room number is yet (obviously!), so watch for the signs. I'll have some signs up at the GoH event early Friday night. You can even buy your Confluence 2008 memberships. |

| Food glorious food |
[Sep. 23rd, 2007|07:23 pm] |
I just go through walking the area of the Rockville Pike near the Hilton where Capclave will be held. I counted over 50 restaurants in an easy walk. This doesn't count the many many available just a little further.
Some highlights.
Joe’s Noodle House (1488-C Rockville Pike, (301) 881 – 5518) House of Noodles. Let me give you the best advice you’ll hear this convention. Eat a Joe’s. Cheap, quick, good (and authentic Szechuan). Washingtonian magazine lists it as a “Best of” even though you go to the countertop to order. Warning: spicy means spicy. Coupon at http://www.joesnoodlehouse.com/coupon.html.
Mosaic Cusine & Café (186 Halpine Road, across the Pike from the hotel). Lots of Waffles, even as sandwiches, but dinners too. Inexpensive.
Mykonos Grill (121 Congressional Lane) – Nice Greek place. Frequently on Best Restaurant lists. Close to hotel. Inexpensive/Moderate.
China Taste/Tokyo Express (155 Rollings) Cheap Chinese and Sushi. Inexpensive
Crisp & Juicy (1331 G Rockville Pike) Roasted Chicken on a splint and middle eastern style.
Inka's Empire (1350 Rockville Pike) Peruvian food.
Seven Seas (1776 E Jefferson St. 301-770-5020)* Chinese restaurant considered one of the best. Pick your fish fresh from their tank. Moderate.
Tour Grill. (1699 Rockville Pike (at the front of Congressional Plaza)) - Golf-themed restaurant. Open late. Moderate
Crab. 1775 Rockville Pike in the Ramada Rockville (across from the Hilton). Crabs are a Maryland tradition and this is the best local place to get them. Expensive.
GREEN FIELD CHURRASCARIA – Brazilian all-you-can-eat BBQ. Servers bring skewers of meat based on your signals. Plus an extensive salad and more buffet. Expensive unless you eat a lot.
Also a ton of other Chinese places. a Noodles & Company, several Pizza places, Bagel City, Original Pancake House, a kosher falafel stand, Blimpe's, Fuddruckers, TGI Friday's, Bennigan's Houston's, Ruby Tuesday's, Tara Thai, etc.
And those people with a car (using free parking at the Metro in the back in the hotel) have virtually unlimited choices up and down the Pike. |

| New LJ community inspired by Capclave Panel |
[Oct. 21st, 2006|01:36 pm] |
Last evening my girlfriend and I attended a panel at Capclave 2006 named "Flannel Pajama Books". There were more authors and titles listed than I could take notes on. At the end I suggested that this might make a good subject for an LJ community and offered to create it in case others there would like to take part. Someone, one of the panelists I think, suggested that should I do that, I should also post this announcement to the Capclave community so that others could find it.
I have created the community, flannelpjbooks, and made my girlfriend chaosdancer my comoderator, although I'd welcome other volunteers as we tend to be pretty busy. |

| Room? |
[Oct. 9th, 2006|07:43 pm] |
Hullo--I'm Catherynne Valente and I'll be reading things and blathering on at panels at Capclave.
I also need a room. The price is very steep, even at the con rate--does anyone need a paying roomie or two? My husband and I don't take up much room, are happy to sleep on couch or floor or what have you, and can be witty or silent as you please. Help! |
