All aboard the atheist bus

HT: [info]serenasnape:
Funniest thing I've seen all day? Happy "atheist bus" children are Christians (or children of Christians, at any rate). Cracked me up.

ETA: Serious reflection from Kester Brewin

Transgender Day of Remembrance

Today, Friday, is the International Transgender Day of Remembrance. It's the day each year when we think about those killed, usually simply because they were transgender.

This year there are over a hundred that we know of, two in South East England within the last few weeks alone. That's 1 transgender person murdered every 3 days, that we know of. Considering how few of us there are as a proportion of the global population, this amounts to wholesale slaughter of trans people.

And the numbers seem to keep increasing. It's doubled since last year.

Vigils are held around the World. Tomorrow we will be holding one in London. If you can't make it along to one, please do consider taking a few minutes to watch this video:

Thank you.

A possible meme.

"Old Testament One-Liners".

Following a discussion after choir practice tonight.

Sum up every book of the Hebrew Bible in 10 words or less. The shorter the better.

NB: This is not intended to mock anyone's religious convictions. We're just playing. And the Revelation of John is at LEAST as trippy as Ezekiel.

Here goes )

Contributions welcome.

Keswick Convention 2010

Next year [info]pigwotflies and I will be at the Keswick convention for week 1 (17th - 23rd July), when Don Carson ('The Don') will be the main speaker.

The Keswick convention is a Christian convention that has been running in Keswick since 1875 (so it'll be year 135). Thousands of Christians come for the three 'Bible weeks' in Keswick every year - the Christians who come are broadly Evangelical, I would have said they were more from the 'conservative' end of the spectrum, but after being there last year I'm not so sure that's true.

The convention has a strong emphasis on learning from the Bible - there are several Bible readings / sermons per day (3 I think), as well as sessions run on all sorts of different topics. As well as music, social things, walks in the surrounding countryside, and so on.

[info]pigwotflies and I will be camping, and we'd love to go as a group with anyone else who might want to come. It'll cost about £50 per person for the week for camping, the convention itself is entirely free (you just have to sort out your own accomodation). I'll be making the booking in early January as the spaces fill up almost immediately as the convention is so popular.

If you'd like to come along or find out more, please leave a comment here or email me.

Also

Better be watching [info]lhc_kills_earth because they might switch it on tonight.
Don't go anywhere, don't drive/fly/use public transport, don't operate heavy machinery, walk near a cliff or do anything else that would cause problems if you passed out for a couple of minutes. Let Flashforward be a warning. ;oÞ

If you're on twitter, @CERN should have the details.

ETA: It's started. Still here.

Wrestling fans would love Mick Foley's cameo on the Daily Show. I gather than non-US residents have trouble viewing the clip, though, for which I apologize.

When my grandmother died

my mother tells me she dreamt that grandma told her that she was in Heaven. My father dreamt of his childhood with her.

That makes me somehow both intensely sad and inexplicably happy.
