Canon Sue: Artha Penn
Hello everyone, newbie here.
Title of Work: Dragon Booster
Author: Nerd Corp
Full Name, including titles: Artha Tannis Penn, the Dragon Booster
Full Species(es): Teenagerus subhumanus, but heir to the ancient power of the Dragon
Hair Colour (include adjectives): Black with white streaks
Eye Colour: Blue
Unusual Markings/Colourations: Has white streaks in his dark hair although the rest of his family are redheads.
Special Possessions/Pets: The Dragon of Legend, Beaucephalis (and yes, the writers ARE mixing their mythologies/history); a Mystical Amulet; a weapon known as a mag-staff; the hormone-riddled heart of expert racer Kitt Wann; and a group of loyal friends who do little besids butt-kiss and act as plot devices.
Annoying Sidekicks: Parmon Sean, the genuis-nerd who fulfills the role of Plot Device; Kitt Wann, SpunkyGirl Generic and Love Interest; sickeningly cute precocious kid brother Lance Penn; Mystic Dragon Priest Mortis, who is probably Artha's father in disguise.
Annoying Origin: His father, Connor Penn, has been breeding dragons for many years trying to bring back the amazingly powerful black-and-gold dragon. He succeeded (surprise surprise) and for no explained reason Artha was chosen to ride it and act as the reincarnation of the legendary hero the Dragon Booster. Apparently there’s an ancient prophecy and various legends, though it remains unclear a) why everyone completely trusts these ancient legends and b) why on earth a cocky brat who develops a new personality flaw every episode would somehow deserve to become the Dragon Booster.
I quote, exclamation marks theirs: "Beau, the mighty dragon of a three thousand year old legend, returns to choose 16 year old Artha Penn to be the Dragon Booster! Now, Artha must learn to release the hero within and stop the evil Word Paynn from starting a terrible dragon-human war!" (Sounds like a summary one might easily find on FictionPress.)
Annoying Way of Ruining the Story: Existing.
Annoying Special Abilities (quoted from the official website): Intelligence (not displayed), Balance, Speed, Martial Arts, Vid Games (oh yes), the Gold Draconium Powers of Legend (yes, with capslock as shown), being "The Legendary Hero who has returned to stop the Dragon-Human War!", and something called “dragon sarcasm,” which seems to be an excuse to have him act like a complete prick most of the time.
Miscellaneous Reasons The Sue Should Not Exist: He’s a Speshul Teenager with a Destiny. Need I say more?
Very well, I will. He develops a personality flaw nearly every episode; he’s special due to his powers rather than any personal qualities; the female lead falls for him despite his egoism, insensitivity, and braggadocio; his friends also stay with him despite his utter lack of redeeming qualities; and besides, the main villains are far more attractive and competent than him, and they lose on the basis of the Speshulness of the Dragon Booster and Authorial Assistance rather than any rational reason.
Redeeming Qualities: Well…the animation’s not bad. And if it wasn’t for him the whole series wouldn’t exist. Wait…is that necessarily a bad thing?
Small snippet of Sue Being Annoying:
This is a TV series, so I can’t provide exact quotes, but here is a small list:
- His father’s apparently disappeared, abandoning both him and his eight-year-old brother, and he hasn’t bothered to go out to look for him.
- His response to his best friend being afraid of heights is to lift him up into the air and keep him there for quite some time. (Nobody sees anything wrong with this.)
- After the same best friend has survived a dragon stampede and done a lot of work to assist him, he refuses that friend any rest on the basis that previously that friend told him off for being lazy. (Again, nobody sees anything wrong with this. It's meant to be FUNNEE.)
- Tends to take that genius best friend for granted, with rarely even a word of thanks over some interesting new gadget he created.
- After winning a race thanks to the help of SpunkyGirl Generic, he claims all the glory for himself, somehow under the impression this will impress her. He’s actually right. She still likes him. (Hormones, obviously.)
- Yelling “Release The Dragon” every time he goes into his transformation ritual (way to keep a secret identity secret, boy. See also ‘If I am Ever the Hero’, Rule 31: “If I maintain a secret identity, I will keep my transformation ritual as simple and quick as possible so that I cannot be interrupted during it.”)
The animation for the show is quite good, owing a lot to anime in style, and the world’s reasonably interesting in a sort of generic fantasy “paint-by-numbers” approach. (The writers have a lot of statistics about their world, and all the standard stock characters, but they haven’t thought deeper beyond that.) I also like the main villain, Word Paynn, who is reasonably competent and has a marvellous voice. Aside from that, most of the cast’s voices are too high; the characters are all heavily cliched; and, of course, the main character is a Canon Sue, with heavy contradiction between (the characters) “OMG! He’s chosen to be the Heir of the Dragon Booster! Let us all bow down before his Speshulness!” and (the viewers) “He’s a bratty little prick who develops a new personality flaw every episode. Tell me again, how did HE get to be the chosen one?” I suppose as kids’ TV it’s not that bad, but it could have been so much better.
