Um... [Eragon]?
*winces* Yeesh, I know a lot of people totally enamored with the books, but I'm curious as to what fellow Sue-detectors think of him. Personally, he sets off constant mild alarm bells... I'm thinking more along the lines of superhuman strength, superstrong magic, and some sort of indescribable personality thing that gets on my nerves; than what would seem to be the more obviously Stu-ish dragon.

Not that they're not damned good books for his age; maybe his writing just needs a little more time.

So, anyway... thoughts?

Eragon is an LoTR Stu and the elf girl is a Sue.

I'd share my thoughts but you need to tell me who this guy is, what series he comes from and why you think he's a Stu/Sue.

*De-lurks briefly*

He's the main character of the book Eragon, which is a very average fantasy book with a huge following, for some reason.

Eragon....djhddklhfkhlh';;skd

I gave up on the book by page 100-something because I couldn't stand the protagonist. He has little to no personality to speak of from what I've read. No hobbies. Nothing memorable about his character (besides being a dragon rider--think that's what they're called--that is).
Stu? Considering that Stus are poorly-constructed characters who somehow achieve these big goals I'd have to say yes.

I'm a little annoyed that the book's getting so much praise just because the author was of a young age. Yes, it's quite something for a boy his age to accomplish, but when ignorant of that fact, the book seems unoriginal and rather flat in terms of both plot and characterization.

Well, that's my two cents. If I'm getting anyone who likes the book angry, my apologies.

Eh, I got through it, but he really did seem like a vague rip-off of Garion & Rand Al'Thor, right down to the Stu-pet horse and Belgarath/Gandalf mentor. (Speaking of Stus...) And the elf-girl... I've read better characterization off the pit. Kid needs a bit more practice, but we can always hope that this is his "Carpet People," and not his "Eye of the World."

Yes! Yes, he was a sue! Quite clearly the author's personal fantasy, imo. And the whole universe was a LotR rip-off, right down to Gandalf's (or Obi-Wan's, come to think of it) death, and the fact that there were equivalents for both orcs and uruk-hai.

I don't know, am I the only who who thinks that phenomenal success with a mediocre product can't help the kid's writing abilities (which do have the potential to be something good)? Just look what happened to Anne Rice . . .

Completely a Stu. I wonder if I might do a form post for this? *goes ahead anyway* :D

Eragon is a Stu. Moreso than that, he is an unoriginal Stu in a unoriginal Fantasy World. He even becomes MORE of a Stu in the second book, which was more interesting when it focused on the characters who did NOT have speshul powers.

He has a sparkly dragon. I can't find an example for this (bar Dragon Booster, which came on TV after Eragon was published), but it has probably been done, oh I don't know, about five billion times already.

There is an Ancient Language that lets you use Magic if you know it correctly. So does the Earthsea books.

Elves who are tall, willowy, high, hippies without the dirt. Dwarfes who live in the mountains and are fond of working metal and digging. Originally both mythological in origin, methinks these images of elves and dwarfs were more-or-less popularised by LotR.

The king is Ebil and Corrupted and a Former Dragon Rider. So many examples.

Bleh.
