Wide Angle Lenses?

I've been having a hard time finding a good, sharp, wide-angle zoom lens under $500. I currently have the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Lens and the Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Zoom Lens. I love the lightness, speed, and sharpness of the 50 mm- but with the large crop ratio of the 10D I am constantly struggling to get back far enough to frame the pictures I want correctly. It's too narrow. The zoom lens is great because of the range, but the pictures never seem sharp enough and it's really heavy, so I never use it. Maybe I accidentally banged it around too much?

Anyway, I am looking for something that has a shorter, but wider, zoom range than the one I already have and that will offer me a sharpness more compareable to the 50mm.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for an affordable flash to use with fashion photography?

Any tips would be very much appreciated!

Hi people. doesn't seem like anyone reads this too often but I have a question. If you feel like answering, great. If not, I will just flounder around trying to figure out out myself. :)
Okay so obviously I have the 10D. I also have that ZoomBrowser software and I am trying to get my pictures from my camera onto my computer.
See, I didn't really WANT to go digital, but my friend convinced me and so far I love the camera. She has always taken my pictures and put them on her computer. However, with the two of us getting our pix on ONE computer....well, let's just say it's time I did my own. So, even though I'm completely computer-dumb, I want to try this. I need to try this.
So the computer says it can't recognize the camera. I have it plugged into the USB port. The camera is on. There's a full battery and an almost full CF card. The software IS installed. I can't think of what I'm doing wrong.
PLEASE help me out here. I give you full permission to make jokes and laugh at me, etc., as long as I get some advice. Slow, well-explained for-dumb-people advice. Great. Thanks everyone.
Jennifer
P.S. Or, I suppose you could just make an offer for this camera and you get it! If I can't access my pictures then what's the point, right? Haha, just kidding, I am not ready to give up this soon. :)
