Voting ABC is as easy as 1-2-3 Here are some basic ABC guidelines that will work wonders if we're all on the same page:
1. If you live in a riding that went Liberal, NDP or Bloc in the last election, vote for that party. 2. If you live in a riding that elected a Conservative, vote for the party that came second. 3. Vote for Elizabeth May if you live in her riding.
Now get your family and 10 friends to do the same. Let's vote out the Regressive Conservatives! (6 Maple Leaf patches on our backpack | Add a patch) | | Thursday, September 18th, 2008 | 1:04 am [snowwalker]

2008 Election There's going to be an election here in just a few weeks and I haven't heard as much about it as I'd like. Still a few things popping up from the series of tubes.
Here's one ad I came across today.

Some question to ask Hello there! I have some questions, maybe someone could explain me something. The first thing is i'd like to know more about Canada - not only things like there is a cold weather and stuff, but about some social programms for children, mothers, workless, medicine etc.. even maybe somebody's livejournal or just notes about life in Canada. And the second thing is: two people want to file an application of documents to Canada embassy, but the first one has Russia & Israel citizenship, and the second one has Ukraine citizenship, and both people are living in Czech Republic with long-stay residence by business visas. In which country can they make an application in Canada Embassy and in which of them is the shortest time of waiting for response? Thank you all in advance. Politics and the Cellular Landscape in Canada Hey there, i'm sure a bunch of people here are aware of the backlash that Rogers is facing regarding the iPhone being released here in canada. one thing that i've stumbled upon that i think really deserves to be checked out is Bill C-555 http://www2.parl.gc.ca/HousePublications/Publication.aspx?Docid=3535409&file=4&Language=Epoints to note, Order 3, A, iii: 3. Within 30 days after the coming into force of this Act, the Governor in Council shall, by order, direct the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to gather information, seek input and make a report on competition, consumer-protection, and consumer-choice issues relating to telecommunication services, including (a) an assessment of the means by which telecommunication service providers can be compelled (iii) to stop locking cellular phones to a specific provider such that they cannot be used on another provider's network, Also of note, Order 2, A and B: 2. Within 30 days after the coming into force of this Act, the Governor in Council shall, by order, direct the Minister of Industry to amend the conditions for PCS and cellular spectrum licences to include (a) a prohibition against the levying of any additional fee or charge that is not part of the subscriber’s monthly fee or monthly plan rate; and (b) a requirement that licensees make available to the public, for every contract, a fact sheet that discloses each service being provided and its associated cost as well as any other fee a subscriber will be required to pay. if you can get behind this, Contact your MP in support of this bill. it's not a very long bill, hell, you could read it within a couple minutes so please do so. it's also not loaded up with unnessessary legalese so it's not hard to comprehend either. also, spread the word if you feel the desire to do so. if you can get behind this, let your friends and family know about it. chances are they may have or are going to get a cellular device, so this could very well affect them. also, to those that are not aware, the iPhone 3G is being released in canada, but of course, Rogers (and fido since they're in bed with eachother) are setting plans that are by far worse than anything at this point for most wireless providers. Check out for more details and to sign an online pettition: http://ruinediphone.com/just an FYI and before anyone asks, i really do loathe Rogers with more than an infernal passion. don't ask, long story. so, that should answer why i'm posting this here. to illustrate, i get a giddy little thrill when seeing Rogers stock fall (and it's fallen about $1-2/share since this has seen the light. This is just so Canadian I'm currently taking a legal secretarial course, and one of my textbooks is a dictionary of Canadian law. You can tell it's Canadian because it includes a definition of "high sticking." (23 Maple Leaf patches on our backpack | Add a patch) | | Monday, June 16th, 2008 | 8:39 pm [kabutar]

Getting really pissed off about enviro issues CBC has this article on their front page today, re lake sites being turned into mine dumps, and the federal govt quietly allowing this. There's also an ongoing issue here in BC about our water and hydroelectric power development (and by extension BC Hydro) being privatized - ie BC Hydro's not allowed to develop any hydroelectric sites until private companies do. There's a book called Liquid Gold written by John Calvert (prof at SFU) - that nobody really knows about because nobody's publicizing it. If it is privatized - mostly to serve American commercial interests - it risks a lot of environmental damage due to unrestrained development as well as a huge hike in our power prices because, in effect, they're selling BC's own power back to the province (by making BC Hydro buy it and sell it to us) so that they can make money trading on the American market - except if there's ever a shortage down south, we could be forced to send our power there. Anyway, I'm getting really fed up of all this stuff. The Conservative govt is going to be quite happy to allow this, and here in BC the Liberals are practically the Conservatives. There are a few groups protesting the BC Hydro privatization, but not much. I feel like someone needs to create a huge ruckus in the middle of the city and start a drive or something, or else nothing will happen and this will all continue to go ahead quietly. I don't really know though. Any thoughts? (26 Maple Leaf patches on our backpack | Add a patch) | | Saturday, June 14th, 2008 | 4:28 pm [alouzon]

Curious...and not about to ask at Customs!! I'm going to Glasgow on vacation in October; it's the first time I've travelled outside of N.A.! What I'm curious about is this: I know the version of Absinthe we have here (in Ontario, at least; I don't know about places other than the LCBO) isn't "real" (no wormwood? Correct me if I'm wrong...although I always found that weird, since Jagermeister has tons of the stuff in it & is perfectly legal!). I wanted to perhaps pick up a bottle while in Scotland, if I can find some, as a gift for a friend who developed a taste for it while in Amsterdam several years back. Now, I don't particularly want to ask the Customs folks at the airport as I'm leaving Canada, "Will you arrest me if I bring some Absinthe back?" 'Cos...well...just no. :) Does anyone here know if it's (the European version) considered a "controlled substance" in Canada, or if it is in fact legal to bring a bottle back with me? I've searched around a bit online & can't find a specific enough answer. Thank you in advance! Current Mood: don't wanna break the law! Hockey Night in Canada So CBC has lost the rights to the Hockey Night in Canada theme song, which they have been using for 40 years (my entire lifetime). How do you feel about this? Dear Canada,
I'm hoping someone can help me with a question about meds. My partner and I live just over the border in NY and we are out of health insurance at the moment! I need aspirin w/ codeine for tendinitis and a broken tooth, and he needs to get his thyroid medicine. Does anyone know if I can just go to the pharmacist counter in ON and ask for them? I think that's what I do for the aspirin, but would they give me the thyroid stuff too? It's not a narcotic or anything. We have a bottle, but are out of refills. I don't mind paying whatever for them, they are pretty cheap, we just don't have a current prescription.
Thank you, I'm immigrating to you next year. I love you.
P.S. please delete if this is way too off-topic or whatever, sorry!

where to turn? I have a serious question and I'm not comfortable posting it in my regular journal because I don't want to be branded a busy-body or a rat. I immigrated to Canada three years ago, it was a lot of hard work, a lot of papers, and a lot of money. I basically starved while awaiting the process. That brings me to my question:
I am 'friends' with a girl. She's here on a student visa at Centennial College from what I can ascertain. She's working full time at two places, she has no papers to do so. She's working totally under the table for tips at bars. She's not a poor immigrant, she's from a well off family from another country. It just really ticks me off that she's doing this when those of us who came here legally the hard way struggled. Is there any place I can turn her in? How much trouble will she get in? Is there a possibility they can deport her? I don't want anything that drastic to happen but I would like to see this stopped.
Sorry if this is an unpopular opinion. Thank you for your help. (17 Maple Leaf patches on our backpack | Add a patch) | | Monday, April 7th, 2008 | 8:33 pm [mindme]
