IRC PIMPING
We have a whole bunch of new players this round, I know we do! AND NEWBIES MEANS IT'S TIME TO PIMP THE IRC CHANNEL~ We are insane and fun and do not bite unless you like it, and it's an awesome way to keep contact and ask other players questions.
And, you know. Have your brain broken on a regular basis.
We are #campfuckudie on irc.lunarnet.org!
Gwendal's SETUP TUTORIAL FOR MIRC.
- the basic setup for getting into the channel... so if you need a guide this is it.
mIRC can be downloaded here. Also, they lie, you don't need to register it.
Krazysam's SETUP TUTORIAL FOR COLLOQUY.
- the same thing, in different packaging... if you have a mac and can't find the right button, take a look here.
So! You've decided to join us?
There are many IRC tutorials floating around. The most complete is Stelas' (server admin! he is helpful!) IRC HOW2 GUIDE. He also has a getting around firewalls post, for university students finding themselves blocked out.
But I'm going to give you a very basic rundown that hopefully will not cause you to run screaming. :Db
Commands:
/join is your basic one, to join a room. You already know /join #campfuckudie, but you can type anything after the # and IRC will create a room for you. This is useful when you want to organize three-person threads. Just tell the others to join #roomnamehere.
/me makes whatever you say an action.
For example! /me waves~ turns into * Pell waves~ in the main channel.
/quit disconnects you from IRC. I can type a quit message, like, /quit goodnight guys! And when I exit, the channel says "* Pell has quit IRC. (Quit: goodnight guys!)"
Private Messages:
It's easiest to just double click on someone's IRC nick to open a new window, called a private message. It's like an IM window between the two of you, and no one else can see.
Nicks:
/nick is how you choose or change the name you're talking under in the channel.
For example! If I was talking as Pell, and wanted to nickchange to Batman, I'd type /nick Batman. The channel would then proclaim: * Pell is now known as Batman. It's nifty.
It is highly reccommended, however, to register your nicks. You do that by typing the following into your server window... this is how I'd register my name, you would of course use your own.
/nick Pell
/msg nickserv REGISTER passwordgoeshere
/msg nickserv IDENTIFY passwordgoeshere
If you ever need to change your password
/msg nickserv SET PASSWORD newpasswordhere
Whenever you log into IRC as your nick from then on, NickServ will prompt you to identify, and you'll have to retype:
/msg nickserv IDENTIFY passwordgoeshere
Other Stuff:
Pings! Nifty guide to setting up pings is here. Trust me, you want these. If you have any trouble whatsoever, or are using a different client, someone in IRC at the time will be happy to walk you through it.
Shortcuts! My possibly-nifty but probably-mostly-useless guide to basic shortcuts. Also for mIRC, and I don't know how to do it in any other program, sorry. But the shortcuts keep you from having to type out all the identification, joining, and parting nonsense that I just explained above. :Db
I think that's all the stuff that I regularly use. Come join us!
I'm totally not qualified to be doing this, Stelas heeeeeeelp what did I forget?
