Singularity, our amazing Porter Square apartment, is looking for one more friendly, responsible, geeky housemate to fill out the apartment as of 9/1/2009! Do those terms fit you or someone you know? If so, please contact us!

The Apartment
As mentioned, Singularity is a gorgeous second floor apartment in the heart of Porter Square. We've lived here in some configuration or another for something like seven years now, and have an excellent relationship with the landlord. Presently, the rent in the rooms opening up ranges from high 600s to mid 700s a month.

More about the apartment . . .

Location - The house is on a quiet tree-lined street off of Elm Street, the main thoroughfare between Porter and Davis Square. The walk from here to Porter is a bit over five minutes.
Space and Amenities - We have a nice-sized living room and dining room, a big kitchen with modern amenities including a fairly new stove and a dishwasher, and a free washer and dryer in the basement. We also have two porches in good repair that have served us well in social situations.
Furnishings - Most of the common rooms will be pre-furnished with our things, but we'd love additions to the place! Come see; it's pretty swank.
Landlord - The landlord only owns this property. He's kind, respectful, attentive, timely and cares a lot about his tenants; he's offered us a lower rent (the price listed is the lower price) than he would offer to new people, and he's had us over for dinner a few times in the seven years we've lived here.
Geekery - The apartment would come with everything we own, including a full entertainment system (with Playstation III, XBox 360 with Rock Band 2, and Wii), a laser printer and tons of board / card games, and wired and wireless Internet options.
Misc. - No pets. No smoking, even on the porches; you'll be asked to do it on the curb. No children.

The Tenants
We're all young professionals (a coder, and an admin for a video game company) or graduate students (in library science). We all enjoy the arts (acting, writing), cooking, recreational gaming (board / card games and so on) and general puttering around on the Internet. We also have individual interests: Beobai likes cooking, rigel is (temporarily) part of a work a capella group, and so on.

You!
We're looking for someone who . . .

Pays rent and other bills on time, and takes responsibility for managing the cost breakdown of one utility in the house.
Keeps the apartment clean. We're not obsessive about it, but we like to think of our place as a home as much as possible, and that includes keeping it tidy. Feel free to check our posted chores list for more information.
Is open-minded! There's a reasonable amount of bi/gay and/or poly within our housemate set, and we prefer to live with people who are comfortable with that.
Is communicative. We try to address any house concerns in a forthright, tactful manner that respects everyone's perspectives, and we expect the same behavior from our housemates.
Preferably, is geeky and somewhat social. If you prefer to keep to yourself or aren't into what we're into, that's totally fine. But we welcome those who indulge in our hobbies and would enjoy our occasional get-togethers.

Is it really just one week away? As in, you know, seven days?

People, it totally is.

One week from tonight, Downstairs In the Cantab Underground, Boston nightlife's next era begins. Hear my words and take heed, kids: there is no more swaggarific way to kick off that Fourth of July weekend than to kick it LEGACY style.

Y'all know by now about LEGACY. You know what to expect. EVERYTHING. That is to be taken in the most literal sense. Yours truly, DJ Sterling Golden, will bring every musical style recorded over the last near-150 years, rocking that iPod-DJ thing like no other. Tracks you love and will forever spill your drink to, alongside music you may have yet to discover, but will wish you had. You and your fabulous friends (your existing ones...and ones you haven't met yet...) shall be grinding and sweating to the hottest jams of the past, present, and future. In short, LEGACY will be the Bean's ultimate dance party.

As my old friend Cusraque was famous for saying back in the day of hey: "U MUST GO." It's just a week away, friends. Make those plans and get there early...why, you ask?...(using booming announcer-guy voice:) Just added this week!...we will be presenting a lovely pre-show buffet from 8-9 p.m! So right. Come and get that grub on in preparation for the evening's set. Then get your "expect everything" on after 9, and party like it's Studio 54, CBGB, and Manray combined into one fierce club monster. So, if partaking in a celebratory opening night buffet is what you wanna do, be sure to show up between 8 and 9 p.m., people.

More 411 to drop on that ass: next week will mark the final time we will be posting these reports online. At LEGACY, next Friday night, you will have the opportunity to sign up for the new LEGACY e-mail list. I must stress in advance: THESE EMAILS WILL NOT COME ONCE A WEEK, like the past few weeks of "News Wire" reports. We have been doing these online postings in order to get the word out about our debut, but once we have dropped that LEGACY science, we will only be sending out e-mails when we are approaching a new night to share with you. So stand up, you don't have to be afraid: sign up next week, and we promise to share our 411 with you when it comes up.

Until then...it's just seven more days, kids. Gil-Scott Heron once said in song, "the revolution will not be televised." He is so right. Only way you'll get to be a part of the beginning of Boston nightlife's next era is to BE THERE. Come see and be seen in just one week! LEGACY is upon us!!!

Two weeks away. 14 days from tonight....

Considering how fucking fast time seems to slip away from us these days, that's practically tomorrow, kids.

LEGACY is getting that much closer. Believe this, the anticipation amongst the fabulous night scene of the Bean is bubbling under the surface, and the smoke is rising from beneath. On the evening of July 3, Downstairs In the Cantab Underground, the fuse will be lit for what will Boston nightlife's biggest premiere.

Admittedly, it can get kinda frustrating doing these weekly write-ups. Like someone writing e-mails to a loving companion who's away on vacation, knowing he or she won't get to hold their partner in their arms until the day comes when he or she comes home; that's what it's like for me writing these. Like you, I want LEGACY to get the fuck here already. I want to unleash that iPod DJ goodness on that ass. I want to see you move yours to the beats presented. With a partner (or two, or more...) just as beautiful as you are.

Alas, patience is a virtue. Two weeks isn't a long time from now. Let it build. Let it simmer until you can't stand to hold it any longer. Think of the euphoric feeling when, on the night of July 3, you finally release. To the sounds of every musical style imaginable from the last 150 years of recorded music history. It will be a swaggarific rush unlike any other, dahling.
Now, in terms of some news, hence the name "news wire" to these weeklies we've been pushing out every Friday; we are currently finalizing dates for future LEGACY events for the remainder of 2009. Those who wondered if this celebration of life, love and music was just a one-off; no one likes it done just once, friends. You know this. The revolution will continue well past July 3. Boston nightlife has not seen anything fresh or innovative in years. Think of us as the new superheroes of Boston nightlife, here to save you from going to bed @ 10 p.m. on a Friday night. HOOPLA from deep within the underbelly of Cambridge...

Three weeks from tonight, and the buzz is reaching the point of becoming deafening. LEGACY is getting closer, dahlings. The talk within the Boston nightlife scene is wrought with anxious anticipation, for no one knows quite what to expect from a night which demands one to "expect everything." The only way one shall find out all the answers to these and other queries: GO. It's Friday night, July 3. Nothing else is going on around town until the night after, when the skies of the Bean will be awash in fiery color, so one may as well bring their fabulous crew along for a night of celebrating history...and MAKING history.

Ah, yes, history. While the atypical LEGACY set draws from the entire near-150-year history of recorded music, we don't want to give the false impression that everyone's going to be seated with pencils in hand and all that daily grind stuff. Nay, this is the only history lesson in Boston in which the students are encouraged to indulge in beverage, grind their beautiful bodies against other beautiful bodies, dance, sweat, and give themselves over to the most absolute of pleasures. The most insanely eclectic DJ set in Boston nightlife history will be the ultimate audio backdrop, one rife with the hottest jams of the past, present, and future. From all musical genres, throughout all of recorded music history. We are being quite literal with the word "all", be assured of this.

Speaking of history...perhaps this week is an ideal opportunity to take a glance back on the events which lead to the birth of LEGACY. Check out this cliffnotes evolution of DJ culture, a story which dates back 103 years:

December 1906: Reginald Fessenden broadcasts music on record over the radio airwaves for the first time. In a matter of years, radio music is the norm.

The 1940's: Jimmy Savile of England begins playing jazz records in a dance hall, alternating back and forth between a pair of turntables for a continuous mix of music. Throngs of curious music lovers begin pouring in.

1969: American DJ Francis Grasso introduces the technique of beatmatching, creating unbroken transitions between songs with similar rhythmic structuring.

1970: The German band Kraftwerk is formed. The band lays down the groundwork of numerous different branches of electronically created music, continuing its evolution from which it started in the hands of icons John Cage, Morton Subotnick, and others.

1973: DJ Kool Herc founds the earliest recognized origins of hip-hop, while he develops the break, which uses identical records to extend the rhythmic instrumental section of a song.

Mid-1970's: The technique of scratching is developed by Teddy Livingstone. According to legend, Livingstone stumbles upon the idea; literally. His mother yells out for him to turn down the volume of his music, which startles Livingstone, causing him to bump into his turntable.

April 26, 1977: New York's Studio 54 opens for business. It goes on to become the most famous and decadent dance club of all time, the swaggarific standard by which all future nightspots around the globe would be judged. 54 would feature performances from several famed DJ's, including Richie Kaczor. Throughout its existence, the club would also bear witness to live performances by KISS, Donna Summer, and many other legendary names.

Late 1970's: Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five break into the scene, and introduce the practice of freestyle battles.

1983: Simeone's Restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts, becomes a nightclub named Campus, which caters to a gay clientele. By 1985, a second part of this location opens up, titled Manray. Eventually the two merge, taking on the Manray name. It would last 20 years as the home of Boston's underground nightlife scene, and a DJ residence to local legends Chris Ewen, Lady Bathory, and others.

Late 1980's/early 1990's: The rave scene emerges. Artists such as Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, and the Chemical Brothers become prominent names on the music scene.

July 3, 2009: A new night is set to debut Downstairs In the Cantab Underground, presented by Dark Sky Productions. The event is titled LEGACY, an unprecedented theme which features the arrival of iPod DJ'ing to Boston's major nightlub circuit, courtesy of newcomer DJ Sterling Golden. A typical LEGACY set will feature music culled from every single musical genre, from throughout recorded music's 150-year history, a first for Beantown nightlife.

Bike to the Sea Day - this Sunday, June 14th, Malden

Bike to the Sea Day, June 14

The 17th annual Bike to the Sea Day ride will be held on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at 9 am. Meet at the Dockside Restaurant, 229 Centre St. in Malden.

A 10 mile family ride will reach Vitale Park in Saugus and an 18 mile adult ride will reach Nahant Beach before returning to Malden. Children must be 8 or over, under 16 accompanied by an adult. Helmets must be worn by all. The $25 family of four fee and the $15 individual rider fee also covers T-shirts, pizza and door prizes after the ride back at the Dockside.

Volunteers needed for registration tables and to serve as marshals out on the course. To volunteer or for a ride registration form, call 781-397-6893 or you may pre-register at Active.com. Riders may also register outside the Dockside on the day of the ride from 8 until 8:45 am.

Bike to the Sea, Inc. is a Malden-based, non-profit organization that works for bicycle safety and safe places to ride. Check out Cambridge Community TV's Summer Screening Series, from June 10 through June 12, featuring the latest works from local media makers. All screenings are FREE, will include brief conversations with the producers, refreshments, and a raffle for prizes. Wednesday, June 10, 7pm: Cambridge Community Screenings
Learn something new about your community! Watch the latest works on Cambridge-centric topics from
participants in CCTV classes and programs. CCTV’s civic journalism team, NeighborMedia; CCTV’s ZIP Docs class, which creates short documentaries about Cambridge; and the Cambridge Bites production group, which profiles local restaurants and the people behind them, will all screen work.

Thursday, June 11, 7pm: "The Centers of the Universe"
his documentary by CCTV’s Project Documentary group looks at religion through the lens of Bertolt Brecht's play “Life of Galileo.” Following the trials and elations of a theater as they bring Brecht's vision of Galileo to life, the project also examines the eternal conflict between spirituality and reason. Scientists, artists and religious scholars discuss controversial issues such as evolution and stem cell research. The latest episode of "You Are Here,” a member-produced news-magazine show, will also screen, including
segments on environmental issues, Cambridge arts, and an interview with Amy Goodman.

Friday June 12, 7pm: Youth Media Program Screening
The culmination of CCTV's School Year Production Program, a rigorous after-school program that supports teens as they create media about their community. This semester, students produced “Artists at Work,” a program featuring local artists and performing groups, as well as collaborating with elementary and middle school students from Tutoring Plus to produce three segments about leadership.

At each show, we distribute 300 show programs. Your business card-sized ad could appear on the back of these programs for only $20! We take that $20 investment and put it toward some of our students who are on scholarship due to mom or dad losing a job in the recent economic downturn.

Our 80's show is this week - 6/5 and 6/6. If you want into the program for the 80's show, I need you to send you ad in by 5 pm this WEDNESDAY (6/3).

If you want ads in either The Rolling Stones or the 90's Rock show programs, just get that in to us by 6/10/09.

Roommate in Condo on Lease?

I will soon be moving to Cambridge and living in a two-bedroom condo. I hope to get a roommate to help pay the mortgage. Is anyone here in a similar situation? If so, what type of lease form (if any) do you use? Thanks!

Hello, Folks!

Did you know that, out of almost 80 students here at the Paul Green School of Rock, we only have 11 bassists? That is equivalent to only 14% of our student populace.

I'd like to take the opportunity to mention that the following SATURDAY slots have opened up with Berklee graduate Ian Underwood:

The following THURSDDAY slots will be opening up with Joe Kowalski, effective 6/20:
