What is Callie_Arizona?

This community was created as a fan site for lesbian couple Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins on Grey's Anatomy. We welcome fanfiction, art, icons, wallpaper, episode discussion, spoilers, videos, and everything in between. What we expect from you is respect for our community, respect for other members, and participation in the discussions.

Why should we root for Callie and Arizona?

Grey's Anatomy filled gay and lesbian viewers with hope when Callie Torres and Erica Hahn became a couple on the show. We were riveted. We held our breaths for their first kiss, we high fived when the network actually showed them in bed, and then we all clutched our chests and couldn't believe the news when Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith) left the show suddenly and without explanation (the actress was fired). Our community, which is filled with diverse men and women from every walk of life, landed on its ass and we had trouble standing up again. Because lesbians were, as usual, being ignored. Once again, lesbian depiction was a caricature of what it really is.

Shonda Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy Creator and Executive Producer) quickly released a statement to say that Callie was the show's lesbian and the storyline with Callie would continue. Insert Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw). Arizona arrived on the scene, with her blond hair and blue eyes, as a piercing reminder of what we had lost with Erica. But as much as she is the same as Erica, she's different. With her heelies, spunky smile, and quiet observation ... she quickly peeled back the layers of fan favorites: Miranda Bailey and Alex Karev. Just like Callie ... Arizona sees everything and she saw Callie's hurt.

Callie's pain since Erica left her has been tangible. The formerly resilient and confident orthopedic surgeon has become a crying, quivering, broken mass. So when Arizona followed her into the bathroom to introduce herself ... we held our breaths once again. And some of us high fived because someone ... someone other than Mark Sloan ... was able to give Callie a pep talk. When Arizona promised Callie that people at the hospital like her and that everyone is concerned about her, we saw that what Callie thought she lost was not the case at all. She's still there. People still notice her pain. She's not invisible, she's not alone, there are other people in the world who will accept her.

"The talk is good," Arizona assured Callie ... just before she kissed a little of Callie's pain away.

Right now, we don't know what ABC and Grey's Anatomy have planned for Callie and Arizona (Calzone to their fans), but we know that it's time for lesbians to be portrayed on network television as something other than the token best friend or guest star. It's time for lesbians to be at the forefront of storylines the same way that heterosexuals are and we're banking on Grey's Anatomy to right the wrongs they committed with Erica Hahn and Brooke Smith by letting Erica be the catalyst that brought out the truth in Callie.

Will we always miss Brooke Smith? You bet. Do we want to hear Erica's voice in the OR when she takes an intern to task? Always.

But as a community that supports the LGBT lifestyle and wants to see the barriers finally be broken, we support Grey's Anatomy, the actors, and the writers as they embark on what we hope will be Callie's final leg of her journey. We want to surrender and let Callie and Arizona give us all the voice that has been missing on the networks for far too long.
