It's true. The 2007 Calgary Zombie Walk is Officially Cancelled
Bad news, ghouls. No one's going to want to hear this, and I sure don't want to post it, but here it is. The 2007 Calgary Zombie Walk has been CANCELLED. Officially.

Before you start with the hate mail, here's the story. After last year's Zombie Walk drew 600 participants, I knew this year we'd have to do everything 'by the book' for the event. That means insurance, parade permits... in short, a lot of things I've never dealt with in organizing the Zombie Walk. I've been working with a couple of volunteers to get everything in order, and I thought we were good to go.

It turns out we're not. One department at The City (Parks and Recreation) gave us some bad information about the processing time for a parade permit... basically, we were told it could be processed in seven working days. As it turns out, though, parade permits are processed by the City Roads division and take up to 90 days to process. When we inquired last week on the status of our application, I was told it wouldn't be ready until the first week of December.

We inquired at Parks & Rec about this months ago. We had everything in order and submitted the paperwork (including the event insurance, which cost a pretty penny and is non-refundable) weeks ago, only to find out now from another department that it takes a lot longer for approval than we were first told. We're tied up in red tape and one City department not knowing what the other is doing. Your tax dollars at work!

So that left us with a few choices. We could postpone the Dead Mile until the permits are in place. But let's face it, no one wants to be outside in December in Calgary if they can avoid it.

We could stage the event anyway and face arrest or fines for doing so... as much as I love the Zombie Walk, I'm not exactly ready to go to jail for it.

Or... cancel the event, and plan to go again in the spring. Which is what we're doing. Details on that will be posted later.

So what about this Saturday? Well, we had worked out an arrangement with Screamfest to shuttle Dead Mile Zombie Walkers from the endpoint of the march to Canada Olympic Park, where anyone dressed in zombie costume would receive discounted admission for the night. That deal is still on! We'll still have $2 shuttle bus service running from Millenium Park to Screamfest as planned, and $5 off at the door for any undead who turn up that night.

Of course, that leaves you with the question of what to do for the afternoon, doesn't it? I mean, it gives you plenty of time to get in costume and maybe... I don't know... meet up with some of your undead friends at... some random spot and... go for a stroll. Or something....... it's up to you, really.

Like one revenant said on the facebook, 'if six feet of soil ain't gonna stop him, then neither is some beaurocrat.'

I imagine police trying to stop it would just add to the authenticity.

What the hell!
It's full of b*crap in the city here

Zomby March is a freakin FLASHMOB for f* sake, noone have to ask permission for that.

I suggest people should still show up and not brake tradition.
Afterall they won't get 600 people in jail, that's impossible.

So no worries, just behave good and don't take responsibility. Say something stupid if you're asked about what's going on.

Pls let me know your thoughts, but I think it shouldn't be like that.

If you're afraid city might know you organized that let's come up with alternative flashmob by the city municipal building.. something fun and stupid)

Anyways good luck, and thanks for update

I agree with above. We do Santacon in winnipeg every year and when the cops come and ask us who organises it we say SANTA! Cops only bother the people who are being way too crazy and trying to steal stuff. Or bothering kids.

Wouldnt make sense that if any cop asks us who organises it we say. Zombies!

I think people in this city are way too afraid of the cops. Same thing happened to the lightsaber battle.

I say we all show up and if it only last 10 minutes untill we get busted up... oh well. It was still fun. And thats the definition of FLASH Mob...

So if a few hundred people wearing blue jeans and cowboy hats were to walk down the same street at the same time going to the same place would they need a parade permit? NO, they just can't j-walk.

IMO you should all put the Fuck You back in Punk and stumble/drag/limp your zombie ass's off.

I've been involved in organising a fair number of protest marches and I've never purchased a permit. I've even identified myself to police and the press as an organizer at these events, and I have never been arrested or fined. Obviously the Zombie walk isn't a protest against anything (except maybe the living?), but it's pretty similar in terms of logistics.

Yes, in theory there's a small legal risk, but generally the police aren't willing to try and enforce it on a couple hundred people (or even 50). Besides, who's streets are they anyways? If we can't make use of public space every now and then, what's the point of having any?

What a permit-free march does need is people to "cork" intersections and keep cars from hitting people, and a good police liason to make sure the cops don't get unreasonable. Don't make assumptions and take safety for granted. At a Mayday march a couple years ago, one dumbass motorist got angry and drove into the back of the march, injuring 4 people. Careful planning can prevent or at least minimize the risk of a similar occurance. Don't assume the cops will do this for you, it's not their job, especially if you didn't get a permit.
