Canada Day Festivities?
Where is the best place in Calgary to view the fireworks (besides at home on the TV) and not get mobbed? I'm six months pregnant so I'm a little mob-shy, heh. Also, where are the fireworks being set off from?

Another question:
I looked at the http://www.calgarycanadaday.ca web site for ideas of where to go to celebrate Canada Day, and these were the places listed:

City of Calgary, Prince’s Island
12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Fort Calgary
9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

HBC Run for Canada
8 a.m. at Fort Calgary

Heritage Park
9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Rocky Mountain Rail Society
11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Does anyone know of any other festivities going on or at least festivities that don't require money to get into?

My favourite is to find someone with an apartment that has a balcony with a good view, honestly. We used to be in one with a great view of the Stampede fireworks, so we'd have people over and watch them from the comfort of our own home. :-)

We'll be in a hotel in downtown Calgary (the Westin I think it is) that has a balcony, but I have no idea if we'll be able to see the fireworks from there. Admittedly, I've never seen the fireworks display in Calgary or been to any of the festivities.

I concur!! last i heard fireworks are banned so if you want any you have to hit the black market out in airdrie or something.

back in chicago i could get bottle rockets on the street when i was 12 no problem :(

As much as my hubby would love to set some off, I think this year we're just planning to go to the festivities instead. =)

Yeah, my hubby and his friend did that a couple of years back at Pembina when we went camping, and they had to run from the fuzz. =)

I've never found Calgary to be very big or excited on Canada Day, not like down east or in Victoria. I usually end up going camping that weekend because nothing much goes on.

We're not from Calgary and just happen to be ending up there en route home from our first wedding anniversary trip. So rather than spend it in a hotel room, we figured we'd see if we could catch a glimpse of the fireworks or something since we missed them in our city last year.

The only time I admittedly go to Calgary is for work, so I've never spent any leisure time in the city at all and don't know where anything is.

Prince's Island Park would be a good bet. I know there are also things going on at Olympic Plaza and I think there are pub-things going on too (which would be fun.) I've only ever watched fireworks from my old apartment downtown.

The pub things won't do me any good, unfortunately, as I can't drink (as much as I'd love to). We may just check out Prince's Island Park though.

Not sure where else things are happening (I always end up staying home), but afaik Fort Calgary and Prince's Island are both free to get in to.

One thing I miss about here is going to the Legislature for Canada Day. That was always fun.

We're from Edmonton, admitttedly, and would always go to the Legislature for Canada Day festivities, but they are holding them elsewhere this year.

We won't be there to enjoy them anyway though as we'll be en route home from a vacation and just happen to land in Calgary on Canada Day. So we still want to go out and see things, and neither of us have ever celebrated in Calgary, so...

Are they? Where are they holding them?

I'm going to go to Prince's Island actually. Taking my son and seeing what we can see.

They are being held at Victoria Park this year, which is really inconvenient to get to. Victoria Park is on River Valley Road, which is just literally downward from the Legislature, but it's a significantly smaller place. I'm not sure why the move; no reason was given for it.

I think it sounds like we're going to go to Prince's Island, too. I just want to walk/waddle around and enjoy the day.

Wow, yeah that's kind of a weird move. Especially with it being smaller (and I remember how packed it was at the Legislature when I was last there for July 1, several years ago). Further from the transit too if I recall the area correctly.

Crazy.

Yeah, Victoria Park is. The LRT doesn't go there, but there is a path that you can walk down to, to get to it. Not that I'd want to walk it though, heh... apparently they are going to have shuttle service to get to Victoria Park from the LRT station at the Ledge Grounds, which will help, but for anyone who tries to drive to it, they will be SOL for finding parking unless they get there stupidly early as the parking lot is very, very tiny.
