| About: | This Community is dedicated to the life and works of Christopher Isherwood, best known for writing the stories that became the musical "Cabaret." Christopher Isherwood was born in England in 1904. His father was killed in World War I. He published his first novel in 1928. In 1929, the poet W.H. Auden lured him to Berlin, where he remained until Hitler came to power. This provided the material for "The Berlin Stories" - which eventually became "Cabaret." In 1939, he and Auden left to live in the U.S. There, Isherwood declared himself a pacifist and became a follower of the Indian philosophy of Vedanta. He lived in Santa Monica until his death in 1986. By then he had become an icon of Gay Liberation for his book "Christopher and His Kind". He had published 9 novels in all, plus 3 biographies/autobiographies. | |
