where would you hold a magic parlour show? Jul. 22nd, 2008 @ 11:37 am
[info]zenith_the_high
so, my husband, the all-knowing, all-powerful Sensei Strange, award winning mind bending purveyor of fine magics, is looking for a venue to hold a parlour magic show fairly regularly. except, we don't really go out on the town much, so we don't know any good spots we could begin checking out, and could use a little advice.

so my dear Austinites, have you seen, during your carousing, a good spot that might be appropriate for holding such a show? it should hold 20-50 people, be a separate room from any bar but have access to adult beverages, and have seating and hopefully a small stage. something like Ester's but smaller would be ideal, but I bet there are many cool performance spots out there.

or, if you work at a nice tasty venue such as described above, would you be interested in having a regular parlour magic show there?

thank you!

CC Nominations and Applications Jul. 11th, 2008 @ 08:53 pm
[info]xoxoxtc
Greetings Flipizens and Pyropleans! It's that time of year again time to nominate new members to join the Combustion Chamber. The CC nomination form and CC application form are now live on the Burning Flipside website and can be accessed by clicking these links:

burningflipside.com/ccForms/ccApp.php
burningflipside.com/ccForms/...ation.php

Nominations and applications will only be accepted until midnight on Wednesday, July 16, so get your nominations and applications submitted by midnight Wednesday, July 16th!

*What is the Combustion Chamber you say?*
The Combustion Chamber (CC) is a community-nominated group of people that provide feedback and direction from the general Burning Flipside community to the Burning Flipside organization. The CC is a self-selecting group that
adds members on occasion to keep its numbers near 10-15. This is done by requesting the community (that's you!) to nominate others or to apply for consideration to join the CC. Once nominations and applications have been
received, the community will then have an opportunity to give feedback on those nominees. Once community feedback has been gathered, the current CC members meet (including the LLC) and discuss the candidates and the
community feedback. From this discussion, some, none or all of the candidates will be invited to interview with the LLC and existing CC members. Once interviews have been completed, the CC decides on who, if any, from the group of nominees will be added to the CC and announces the new members to the community.

*A little more on what the CC does?*
CC Members discuss policies and the direction of Flipside at the organizational level, and CC meetings are generally where major (and minor) changes are discussed. The CC is not necessarily the group that executes the decisions recommended by it, often it is the Leads, volunteers, AFs, etc. who will actually implement what was decided. In general, the CC does not manage the operational tasks of the event ? those tasks are generally handled by Leads, volunteers, AFs, or the LLC.

*What am I committing to if I join the CC?*
Members of the CC are expected to serve for at least one year, and we hope that they will serve as long as they are an effective conduit from the community to the organization. CC meetings are currently held on Monday nights at 7:00 p.m. at the AAR LLC Warehouse on Springdale Road in East Austin. During the "off" season, meetings are held 1-2 times a month, and during the "high" season before Flipside, they can be held as often as weekly.

*Tell me again: How do I nominate someone or apply to be a new member of the CC?*
The CC nomination form and CC application form are now live on the Burning Flipside website and can be accessed by clicking this link:
burningflipside.com/ccForms/ccApp.php
burningflipside.com/ccForms/...ation.php

Nominations and applications will only be accepted until midnight on Wednesday, July 16, so get your nominations and applications submitted by midnight on July 16th!

Thanks so much and thank you to those of you who are interested in stepping up and helping to make Flipside better! If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at cc@flames.burningflipside.com.

[info]zenith_the_high
Howdy my fine fellows. Perchance by now you have rested your body, revived your energy, and consoled your soul enough to begin thinking about Decompression.....if so here are the details as I have them, now with gate hours!

Gate hours for Decompression:
Friday Noon to Midnight
Saturday 9 am to 9 pm
Sunday 9 am to 5 pm
That means you leave at 5pm and take your trash with you. Please don't forget this part!

>
> Dates are Friday June 27 - Sunday June 29
Locale: Rec Plant, directions below
>
> Cost will be $10 per person/ child/ or pet:
>
> -Bringing a child or a pet means you have to take full
> responsibility for them. If you let your dog (or child
> for that matter) run wild, terrorize people or other
> dogs, or poo on stuff, people will be pissed at you and
> you may be asked to leave.
>
> -If you bring someone new to our community, it is
> requested that you have them read the survival guide.

> There is a late
fee of 5.00 per vehicle
> anytime after the gate hours and a 5.00 in/out fee per
> vehicle for any vehicles exiting the event and
> intending to come back.
>
> We will have power in the pavilion and stage,
> and most likely ice will be sold sometime on Saturday.
>
> There is no assigned camping at Decompression.
> You can park your car by your camp. Generally
> speaking, the lower field will be loud. Quiet camping
> is above the cattle guard. Please don't camp on the
> stage.
>
>
> It has worked out well in the past letting people sign
> up for time slots on the main stage by going to the
> Yahoo group site and filling in the calendar. Saturday
> night is usually reserved for acts, so please don't
> book the stage that night with dj's until after
> 11-12pm. If anyone would like to organize a burlesque,
> variety
show, or other interactive use of the space,
> that would be swell. If not, we can all play nice and
> figure it out.

your first time out, it can be hard to
find. pee in Dripping Springs, trust me.

alternate directions:

Take Hwy. 290 & turn left onto FM12, at the 1st light

in Dripping Springs. Go down aways & turn right onto
East Mt. Gainor Rd (CR 194). Take to end & turn right
onto Mt. Gainor. Turn left onto Prochnow Rd. At end
of Prochnow, turn left onto Pursley Rd. Continue on
Pursley till you reach mailbox 3650 and turn right,
there is a high chain link fence lining the dirt road
driveway. You'll be coming from the opposite direction
on Pursley.

Please be aware that we very well may have a burn ban in
effect unless the heavens open up significantly between now
and then. we do have an effigy thanks to the lovely Sparrow,
though we may end up decorating it only to not burn it in the end.

Sparrow says this about her art:

"The Temple at Decompression this year will be our effigy -- it is our take on Burning Man's annual Temple. The basic structure will be three booths, shaped similarly to photo booths, connected at a center point. Each booth will be have a bench to sit on, a desk, means of writing, and a great deal of shelf space. They will be enclosed, but still open to the world – private, but not ALONE – there will be no doors, only doorways which will be draped, and windows, but open ones. This is meant as a space for introspection, catharsis, and general "letting go". The shelves are there so that people can leave things that they need to let go of: letters, pictures, mementos, etc.. The structures will have ornamentation of wood and metal, in symbols that the community has said mean to them "rebirth", "new life", and "new beginnings". The piece is not complete until the community has contributed to it.

Many people gave many things to The Temple at Flipside this year, and their contributions will remain intact. I hope that more people will utilize it at Decompression, and then we can all burn it together in a group catharsis. So bring it: whether a physical reminder of that which you want to let go of, your written words, or your thoughts. Bring it to decompression, leave it in The Temple, and let go of it to the flames."

So, there it is folks. anyone who didn't get their art done in time for FS, bring it out. its gonna be a blast!

Angelique

Final Cleanup Call for Help May. 29th, 2008 @ 11:09 pm
[info]xoxoxtc
We're almost done. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard. Saturday will be our final day to clean up the remains of the amazing effigy and make sure we Leave No Trace.

If you want to help:

Show-up at 10 a.m. (as near it as possible) out at Flat Creek.

Meet at the Grove or Burn Scar:
break out into teams of 4 (as you arrive) get bags

When we have a team of 4 ready to go, you will be:
o dispatched to MOOP a zone
o double-check we've got all perimeter caution tape
o finish gathering placement/planning flags
o keep track of problem camp zones
o keep track of what's clear, Parsec or Thomas will clear
the zone

Other hands will be used to gather Site-ops, clean up the burn scar and other duties as assigned.

If you've got a pickup truck, bring it, if you can carpool, do it
We are NOT camping there overnight. We will be out well before dark. There will be other people on the land, so wear clothes. There is the possibility of creek time after the work is done, but you must have a suit.

This almost goes without saying but here goes.

Bring sunscreen and water.

Do not bring your pets.

Do not bring your friend who wilts like a flower after 10 minutes, even in the shade.

Do bring extra trash bags (we've all got extra, right?) just in case

Do bring a ready body to get this shite done.

» Bob's List failure
I have two tickets to Flipside, and had been using Bob's List to contact people - and haven't heard back from anyone, leading me to guess that the info just wasn't getting through.

I'm in California, so tickets would need to be overnighted today for someone to use them. Does anyone here want them?
» Ghouls! Ghouls! Ghouls!
Calling all lovely ladies and gents of the dark side! We are currently looking for acts on Friday night from 10pm-11pm at Goth Camp/Circus Nefarious for goth burlesque. Bring your black eyeliner, Bauhaus and finest Hot Topic attire and sign up for a spot by emailing me at thehulahoopgirl@gmail.com or just come on down around between 8-10pm and warm up for your performance with some Scary-oke!
» Eposia's Crosstime Saloon @ Burning Flipside 2008
Eposia's Crosstime Saloon will return against the odds to Pyropolis in 2008. Eposia and the other staff of the Saloon have had a crazy year, and we're looking forward to creating a relaxed, enjoyable chill space for us and for you to unwind in. Visit us when you are coming down from your adventures or as your night begins, or any time you want to kick back. Eposia's is an official Drama Free Zone (tm), so you can also hide here if camp politics get you down.

Once again, we'll be serving our fruit punch and Irish coffee (also known as "God's Blessing") when we feel like brewing up a pot (we might even do it for you you ask
nicely). Our camp also features the famous 'toasting' ritual, in which you can unload your joy or your pain to an appreciative audience.

Eposia's this year is located at #8 Naughty Avenue, at the corner of Naughty Ave and Mushroom Tower Trail.

» FlatCreek Goodness?
Want to see FlatCreek in her unspoiled state without all those damn hippies/ravers/shirtcockers/insertyourenemyhere and be a MAJOR help to the event?

Then come out Sunday and help flag the site. We've got to mark roads and camps and need more bodies. Like really need them. So if you're interested in being a last minute hero, then please email me at volunteerinfo@burningflipside.com asap so that I can give you details and get you on the list.
» Flipside Needs You!
Hi kids,

So we have just a few short weeks left and I have about 60 positions left to fill. Won't you please help?

If you can, please email me at volunteerinfo@burningflipside.com.

When you email, please let me know:
Have you been to a Burn event before? (Burning Man? Flipside?)

Are you good with people? How about maps? Are you available for work before or after the event? When do you think you'll arrive at the event? Are you looking to do just 1 volunteer shift (3-4 hours) or are you interested in coming out early/late to help? Let me know a little bit about you and we'll find the right place for you!
» Burner's Without Border's Cinco de Playa! May 4th, Cherrywood Green
Hey all,

Burners without Borders groups all over the world (US! Peru! Australia!)
will be hosting clean-ups in their local areas the weekend before Cinco de
Mayo. (http://tinyurl.com/4xknmr)

Seems like a great time to revisit Cherrywood Green for some maintenance and
caretaking. We should be able to get the area spiffy looking in just a
couple hours of time.

So let's do it:

date/time: Sunday May 4th, 3-5pm
location: Cherrywood Green Park @ Cherrywood & 34th St

I'll bring the trashbags, a small toolkit and a boom-box for dancey work
tunes. Just bring yourselves and work gloves if you've got them.

» Pyropolis Volunteer Central Wants You!
Hello,

I’m excited to announce that the Pyropolis Volunteer Conscription, formerly known as Volunteer Central/Help Desk, Wiki is up and ready for volunteers to help volunteers.

http://www.burningflipside.com/OpsWiki/index.php/Pyropolis_Volunteer_Conscription

PVC is going to be a little different this year. We’re still committed to helping Flipizens help other Flipizens but our mission has expanded. This year a Communication Center has been added to our area. Need to get in touch with someone? Leave them a note on our boards.

What, Where, When, Why and How:

What: PVC provides a central resource during Flipside for volunteers to connect with those that need assistance and vice versa. I’ve chosen a M*A*S*H theme for the area: think Radar’s area with a Tiki twist! Our color is that lovely, pukey, army green.

Where: In the Grove, underneath lots of shady trees

When: Two hour shifts from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Why: Because it’s fun!

How: With your help, of course! But I’ll need help with signage, painting, set up and tear down.

Thanks for your time and feel free to contact me with any questions: pvc at burningflipside dot com

» DAFT Needs Volunteers!
Hi there,

We are a mere 34 days from the Burn, and this effigy is looking to be an amazing one deserving of our 10th anniversary.

But we need your help!

Everything you could want to know about Daft is here:
http://www.burningflipside.com/wiki/DrTikiWiki
You can see the proposal, the build blog, needs, etc.

But the important parts are when we work. We need you to show up Wednesdays for Church Nights and Sundays. Basically there are 9 of these left!

Church Night:

Every Wednesday starting around 7:00pm ish. Social setting but lots of work to be done. Many small jobs that just need to be adopted by a volunteer.

Sunday Builds:

Every Sunday starting between 1:00 and 2:00 pm. We usually work till around 7ish, then eat some BBQ/pizza/etc. Less hectic work environment with fewer people and less distractions. We try to use Sundays to regroup, prep tasks for volunteers on Wednesdays, and build jobs that require more attention to details.

So that's my pitch. Please come help us! Feel free to email me back with questions or to tell me you plan to make it at volunteerinfo@burningflipside.com.

If you do plan to go:

*Please look at this page (http://www.burningflipside.com/wiki/DrTikiWiki/WeekInDaft ) and think about what you would like to work on and then you can ask for the person leading that team (all Daft Leaders wear orange shirts) to put you to work

* Please give the leader a moment after you approach to get you to work. There's plenty of work, it will just take them a minute to figure where to put you in.

Are you in charge of a theme camp? And interested in giving up your Saturday to making it run better?

This Saturday!
We have a great resource in this community, and his name is Jack. On Saturday, April 12th Jack will be giving his leadership training covering how to be a good lead and how to ruin a theme camp. It will take a whole Saturday, but I promise it's worth it. I highly recommend you attend.

* 10 things you should never, ever, ever do while leading freaks (and other people too)
* People don't care what you say, they care what you DO - and what you can do to be a great leader for them.
* How to set expectations with your volunteers and them camp members, and discover who is actually going to do the work and who isn't
* Your basic tools for leading people: the schedule, the meeting, the task list, the email
* How to put together a real game plan for what you're trying to do
* How to not suck at communicating with your team
* How to run a meeting that is fun, has a purpose, and gets the right stuff done
* How to fire somebody who isn't working out and still keep them as a friend

» Sad news/cry for help re: Eposia's Crosstime Saloon
For those of you who may have attended Eposia's Crosstime Saloon at Flipside last year, we've got sad news -- a major contributor to our camp, who was going to use her truck to transport our structure to the event, has dropped out of the camp to camp elsewhere at this very late date (we found out wednesday!). Our budget is tight this year and we can't rent a UHaul.

This means that if we can't find someone with a vehicle capable of transporting our 10x20 tent and other equipment to the event in return for gas money, Eposia's Crosstime Saloon is unlikely to appear at Flipside 2008. I realize most people with such a vehicle have already committed it, but I wanted to toss this out to the universe just in case. To be clear, the equipment in question is located here at the 'Slutbarn' in College Station, Texas.

And, additionally, just like everyone else in the Flipsidiverse right now, we're looking for at least one extra ticket -- for Derek, a dedicated and valuable camp member and [info]eposia's brother. I've already placed a listing on Bob's list but figured I'd mention it here too.

» Theme Camp Registration for FS08 Now Open!
Theme Camp Registration for Burning Flipside 2008 is now open!

You may begin registering your theme camp here: http://www.burningflipside.com/themecamps

The deadline for registering your theme camp for this year’s event is: May 7, 2008. All camps registered after this date will be placed as space permits and may not appear on final published maps for the event.

Due to the new Sound Policy, we’ve re-zoned much of Pyropolis. The Placement Team will attempt to accommodate your camp’s placement preferences whenever possible. However, the Placement Team reserves the right to place your camp in a location that best complies with the sound policy while also serving needs of the entire event. The final location of your camp will depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to: number of campers, camp infrastructure, sound levels, vehicles, interactive content, volunteerism, fire safety concerns, etc..

The Theme Camp Registration form is lengthy. Please help us help you by sharing as much detailed information about your camp as possible. This will allow us to find just the right spot for your camp.

Special thanks to Treg Taylor for the many hours of work he has put into developing the online forms. We also want to thank Ke, !Bob, and all the volunteer website testers. These folks have been working very hard to automate much of what we had to do by hand last year.

Note: Even though we’ve tested the website forms, there is still a chance that we might have missed something. If you have problems registering your theme camp, simply drop us line at cityplanning08@burningflipside.com .

If you are not camping with a theme camp this year, but would like to reserve a camping spot in advance, we will open up personal campsite reservations on May 1, 2008. Look for more information in a few weeks.

Feel free to forward this announcement to any and all relevant lists.

Thanks,
Michael 7.0
