Burma Transcriptions
Hi, I'm a fairly new Burma fan (heard about them on a Red Sox message board, downloaded and got blown away by Academy Fight Song, Revolver and a few other songs, then randomly spotted and grabbed the Rykodisc reissues of Vs. and Horrible Truth at a small CD store and was further blown away). I'm also a guitarist, and the only stuff I can find on the internet is 3rd rate tabs of 2nd rate covers of Burma songs. Does anyone here either have or know where I could find some good transcriptions or tabs or sheet music or anything of Burma songs? Thanks in advance.

Hmm, I wonder which Red Sox message board that was, and who might hve talking about Burma?

The sad truth is that the best Burma tabs are probably the ones in my head, from the handful of songs Roger has shown me. Let's see: I know "Academy," the verse and chorus of "Revolver," "Cowboy," "Secrets," and, of all things, verse and chorus to "Execution." Let me know if you're interested in any of those.

Next time I see Roger I'm going to ask about getting tabs onto the Burma web site. There is certainly a need and a demand. The world does not need more people butchering their songs!

I'm not sure how many Sox boards you often pontificate about Burma in, so I'll answer that question with a straight face. It's SoSH (I'm Jimy Hendrix over there). As for tabs, Academy and what you've got of Revolver would be great for a start. I guess you can post them up here, or if you want to e-mail them to be you can get that through my SoSH ezboard profile.

Hey, Jimy! Should have guessed it was you.

I bet you can figure out Academy after I tell you the secret. Tune B to Bb and E to D. Every chord is a root 1 (chorus) or root 5 (verse) half-barre chord on E-A-D with the G-Bb-D open and optionally strummed. The bridge is all root 5 ending on root 1.

After you work it out I'll tell you what the chords are. My favorite is the Ab5maj9+dim13.

A few questions before I start messing around with this.

1) Just to make sure I've got the tuning down, It's only the high E tuned to D, not both, right? Making for a tuning of (low to high) EADGBbD.

2) root 1 and root 5. I can almost guarantee that I know the chord shapes, but not by those names. Which ones are those exactly?

Correct about the tuning. Just the high E.

A root 1 barre chord is the one based on open E and a root 5 is the one based on open A. The two that comprise 99% of your major barre chords. (I'm not even sure what you call the barre chord based on open C). So in "Academy" you're fretting (E, A, D, G, Bb, D), e.g., 3-5-5-0-0-0 or 3-3-5-0-0-0 . . . move those shapes up and down the fretboard and you should find every chord in the song.

All right, I think I've sounded out the verse and chorus, but feel free to correct, as my ear is generally inclined towards tin.

Verse chords (rhythm not written down, either figure it out or look at this cruddy tab of the R.E.M. cover, as it does nail the verse rhythm)

I think 2) is the chord hit 4 times in the very beginning, and then the verses alternate between a patter of 1) then 2) and 3) then 2)

D -4--5--2--7--
A -4--5--2--7--
E -2--3--0--5--
played in the order in which I wrote them.

OK, feel free to comment/correct, and also provide the one part I missed, the 4-barish insturmental break after the 2nd chorus.

Your verse is correct; you have to add 1 to everything in the chorus (except, of course, the 0's).

The verse chords, BTW are Bb6, C59 (i.e., C9 with no 3rd), Ebmaj7. Chorus chords are Gm, Ab5maj9+dim13 (!), Fsus6+9, Bb6.


The first bridge theme (heard 1st, 2nd, and 4th; last chord held twice as long):

The third chord is held for a bar and three beats or so and the last chord is just a passing chord back to the 1st one. Those are the chords no one ever gets right.
