Volvo dealers in Burlington area (Btown, Williston, Essex, So. Burlington)
My 91 Volvo wagon needs ABS brake work. I have had a few local recommendations, but want to shop around. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend some NON-dealer Volvo mechanics who do good work for a fair price. I don't make a whole lot of money, so I would like to keep the costs down.

P.S please include the price you paid and contact info for the mechanic if you can.. thanks!

    carpooling to get chores done?
I live in the Old North End, and pretty much for that and other reasons I don't have a car.

Those of you who've ever been in the same boat know- not having a car and getting to shopping in this place is like, an all day event- waiting for the buses, schlepping whatever you can carry to the bus stop, waiting again... what takes a driver an hour or two to accomplish can last up to 5 or 6 hours for me.

With gas prices what they are, I'd think carpooling would be an appealing thought anyway. I'd far rather toss a few bucks into someone's tank to get to Walmart or Cheese Traders than mess around doing the bus thing.

So...whaddya say? Any takers for the occasional shopping trek? Other than gas money i can provide amusing convo and I burn a mean mix CD for roadtrip tunage to accompany you when you go further places w/o me.

    Practice Space
    Hi All,

Just checking to see if there are any musicians in this community who know where I could rent practice space for a three piece rock band? Nothing fancy, just enough sound protection to avoid a noise complaint.

    Thanks!

    Car repairs!
Hi everyone... I've been in Burlington for about a month now, and of course I need car repairs.  My car is currently at Handy's, where I'm being quoted aroun $1200-$1300, because I apparently need like an entire new exhaust system, and a tune up.

Any idea if I should just go ahead and trust Handy's?  I'm thinking of bringing it somewhere for a second opinion, but where should I go?

    Thanks everyone!

EDIT: Thanks all for your advice about handy's... turns out you were all right!  I ended up getting a second opinion, and I'm down to $700.  Boo to handy's!

    geekery
I just moved to Burlington for grad school. Back home, my friends and I played a lot of board games (things like Settlers) and video games (things like Timesplitters or networked DS games). My classes are pretty outdoorsy and field-intensive, so I'd love to unwind with a bit of geeky gaming now and then. Are there any local regular nights for this kind of thing? Does anybody host one who wouldn't mind a wayward Canadian attending?

    [villainism]
Hello, all. I'm 25 years old and living in the Washington, DC area right now, moving at the end of the year, but I'm not sure where yet. I'm looking into Burlington as one of my options, but I'm curious what the job market is like there. Is it a pretty easy place to get just an office job? Are the salaries pretty good? Are they commensurate with the cost of living?

Also, is it an easy place to make friends? One of the most infuriating thing about the DC area is that it's impossible to meet anyone. Period. I'm a really affable person, but the people here are just a bunch of mean, self-important bastards who don't want to get to know you if you make less than $80,000 a year. It seems safe to assume that New England in general doesn't subscribe to that philosophy, but I'd just kind of like a better idea of how easy it is to get along with people.

    Thanks for your input!

    Reservations needed?
I am expecting my party to be about 4 or 5 people on Sunday. We are going to go to RiRa's. Do I need to make reservations for dinner? I know it's obviously low key, but I don't know if Sunday draws a big crowd, since I have only been there on a Friday.

    Stolen Bag!!
I was at the University Mall on Sunday with my daughter; I got some food and hung my black Ameribag over the back of my chair, and when my daughter got fussy, managed to completely forget and walk away from it! Of course when I went back for it, it was gone.

Thankfully, almost everything of monetary value was in my pockets, so I'm hoping very much that the thief ditches the bag somewhere in a corner, where my knitting, and my fountain pen that was my great-grandmother's (it's worthless, truly, it's just old, and sentimental), can be returned to me. I will happily pay a reward to the person who gets it back in my hands.

Just trying to get the word out.

    Thanks.

    wanna be my hero?
I am really wanting one of those green IL♥VERMONT bumper stickers.. I moved to Calistupidfornia and I can't find them online, only a cafepress knock off. Would someone here be generous enough to send me one? I would be forever grateful.

Good inexspensive places to throw a B-day bash?
I am throwing a B-Day party the weekend of my birthday, and am trying to decide on a place that is budget friendly in B-town to celebrate at. I may have one or two Vegatarians to appease, so some place that is Vegan/Veggie friendly would be good as well. I like the idea of Ri-Ra's or maybe even American Flatbread, but I know both can be crowded and have big waiting lists. I still have the VT Brew Pub as well as Drink on my list. I also like Asian,Ethiopian, pub fare, and authentic Mexican.

Prefer NOT to be in the midst of a fratastic weekend, so a place that has a mix of people and is not super-noisy would be excellent.

    Snow Tires?
Anyone here have decent snow tires they are willing to get rid of in the Burlington or Stowe areas for Free? I'm an Americorps VISTA and so I don't have all that much dough to spend on snow tires. If it helps, I drive a older 740 Volvo so tires that fit that model would be perfect.

    Hiking Camel's Hump?
Some friends and I want to hike Camels Hump, however, I know that some of the trails mean an almost all-day hike. We're looking for a fairly moderate hike up the mountain that will allow for us to get up to the summit, have lunch, and hike back down before sunset.

Any suggestions? I noticed most trails are around 4 to 6 miles long.

    1.  are there any  good restaurants in Montpelier or on the road between Burlington and Montpelier?

    2.  A Single Pebble, Trattoria Delia or something else (if so, what?)?
