FIC: Testing
Title: Testing
Fandom: Vorkosiverse/Harry Potter (fusion)
Characters: Miles, Ivan, Draco Malfoy
Rating: G, gen
Word Count: 790
Prompt: Harry Potter (AU): Miles and Ivan are students at Hogwarts
Author's Notes: Written for the bujold_fic fest 2008. Thanks to JB for brainstorming.

"Make way for your betters, half-goblin," Draco Malfoy said, sweeping down the corridor with his shadows, Crabbe and Goyle, in tow.

Miles bit back the reply he wanted to make. My mother was cursed when she was pregnant! Malfoy knew that full well; who knows, it could have been his blasted father who'd cast the curse. Everyone knew that Lucius Malfoy had been a Death Eater. Instead, Miles drawled, "Can't you do better than that, Malfoy? But then, you got the brains of a Veela as well as the looks." He gave a theatrical sigh. Would Malfoy take the bait?

"And you're so desperately intelligent, Vorkosigan?" Malfoy returned.

Miles buffed his nails on his robes, trimmed with the same green and silver as Malfoy's. "Next week's Transfigurations test says that I am."

"Transfigurations isn't important," Malfoy said.

"So you think you can't get an Outstanding for the test?" Miles said.

"Of course I can!"

"Care to make a little wager on that?" Miles asked.

"Ten galleons I can," Malfoy said.

"I'm not talking about pocket money," Miles said. The Malfoys were obscenely rich, but the Vorkosigans were rich as well, if more well known in Europe than in Britain. "I was thinking something much more valuable, if intangible. Whoever does better in the test owes the other a favour - no questions asked."

Malfoy smiled. It wasn't a nice smile. "I'll make you do something... terribly embarrassing."

"If you win," Miles said.

###

"Cousin Ivan!" Miles called out. His cousin was in the midst of a gaggle of Gryffindors, probably talking about Quidditch. It was just after breakfast, so the wild beasts had been fed, but that didn't mean one didn't take precautions.

Ivan broke away from the group and came up to Miles. "Embarrass me in front of my fellow Gryffindors, why don't you? Why did you have to be sorted into Slytherin, Miles?" Ivan complained.

"Because I'm ambitious and cunning," Miles said. "Would you rather be in Durmstrang? Or mother's old school in California that she wanted to send me to?"

"Aunt Cordelia is strange," Ivan said. "And not just because she's muggleborn. Did you know that she uses crystals?"

"Of course I know that, Ivan, she's my mother," Miles said. "I need a favour."

"You always do," Ivan said with a sigh. "Why should I do what you want?"

"Do you want Malfoy to get what's coming to him?" Miles said.

"You're fighting with Malfoy? Are you insane?" Ivan said. "Either one of Crabbe or Goyle could break you like a toothpick."

"Which is why I'm using brains against brains," Miles said. "I need you to distract Professor McGonagall after Transfigurations today. Delay her from going into her office. Ten minutes should do it."

"You're not thinking of cheating, are you?" Ivan said.

"Cheating? Me? I wouldn't dream of it," Miles said. In a softer voice, he said, "I'll explain everything later."

Miles caught sight of Draco Malfoy out of the corner of his eye and smiled.

###

Draco silently followed Vorkosigan after Transfigurations class. Sure enough, he made straight for McGonagall's office, and came out after five minutes. Cheating, was he? Well, two could play at that game. No reason he couldn't use Vorpatril's distraction for his own ends.

Cautiously, he entered the office. Ah. There on the desk, slightly askew, as if it had been replaced in a hurry, was a parchment. Draco picked it up. Yes, it was the test all right. Quickly, he noted the contents. This would be a coup -- it looked like the professor was concentrating on the alternate readings, the ones nobody would be preparing for. But he would be prepared.

And he'd beat that half-blood, and make him squirm.

###

Miles grinned as he left the classroom after the Transfigurations test, Ivan in tow. He paused in the corridor, waiting for Malfoy to exit.

"Well, Malfoy, I guess you owe me a favour," Miles said. "Imagine, a Malfoy barely passing a test! Amazing!"

"I'm not going to do you any favours, half-goblin," Malfoy hissed.

"Defaulting on a bet?" Miles said. "Not what a true pureblood would do. A gentleman honours his agreements."

"What do you want?" Malfoy said.

"I'll let you know," Miles said.

###

"But Miles, how did you do it?" Ivan asked him later.

Miles grinned. "I did it the easy way. I didn't cheat."

"You didn't cheat? What was all that with McGonagall's office, then?"

"I wanted Malfoy to think I was cheating. Plus, I put a fake test paper on her desk," Miles said. "Dissappearing ink, so McGonagall wouldn't know about it. If Malfoy thought that was the real test paper, well, he shouldn't have been cheating, should he?"

"You're downright dangerous, you are," Ivan said.

"Never underestimate the cunning of a Slytherin," Miles said.

If Miles were at Hogwarts... well, the war would be a good deal shorter, for starters. But he'd be like this. Devious midget. Love the back-story, especially Cordelia the New Age Californian.

Thank you!

Miles versus Draco had been ticking in the back of my brain ever since I suggested that prompt, though the "crystals" thing didn't occur to me until I was writing that bit of dialogue. All I knew before that point was that Cordelia of course was a Muggleborn from California. But I expect the crystal usage is merely a different magical tradition, not necessarily New Age, at least not with all the other things that go with New Age.

Poor, poor Draco! He's way over his head. But then - it's his fault, right? You'd think that after some years as Miles' housemate he'd be smater to the consequences of trying to best Miles...

Thinking about this further, I suspect that Miles would be more likely to clash with/manipulate Dumbledore. He'd be more cautious with Snape, since he wouldn't know what side Snape was on.

I hadn't thought about it before, but of course Miles would be sorted into Slytherin. :) And he would totally be matching wits with Draco Malfoy, until and unless he managed to charm Draco too and bring him into his Milesian schemes.

I doubt very much that Miles would be interested in charming Draco. Not the way Draco is pro-Voldemort and anti-Muggleborn, since Miles' family fought against Voldemort (hence the curse that stunted Miles). Miles might succeed in charming other Slytherins, though.

Maybe not Draco as he is, but I can imagine him twisting Draco's head around until he saw things at least slightly differently. I was sort of thinking of the scene in The Warrior's Apprentice (I think) where Miles starts to win over the cadet who was initially hostile to him, by saving his hypothetical life in that clever way, and then the cadet asks him about his knife. (I think I'm remembering it correctly, but I may have the details slightly off.) In a sense, Miles has to deal with a whole planet of people with prejudices like Draco's, and he manages to get through to a lot of them. I suppose it's possible that Draco, like Ma Mattulich in the Mountains of Mourning, or like Miles's grandfather, would not change his mind. But usually, Miles fails to connect with people from the older generation. People closer to his own age he can usually twist around to seeing things differently. I think Miles would see Draco much like he sees Ivan - as a minion to do his bidding and involve in his schemes. Or at the very least I think Miles would want to see some signs of some sort of grudging respect from him, and wouldn't stop until he had achieved it.

The tricky thing about Draco's situation as opposed to the cadet is that the cadet is at least ostensibly on the same side as Miles, serving the Emperor. It isn't just Draco's anti-muggle predjudice, it's his desire to follow in his father's footsteps. I think the best Miles can hope for is enough grudging respect that Draco stops trying to mess with Miles.

Hmm, that's true. I hadn't been thinking of the larger context of pro-Voldemort anti-Voldemort opposite sides thing. I was thinking more that they were on the same side because they are both Slytherins. I mean, wouldn't they recognize each other's talents enough to want to team up together to beat the other Houses at Hogwarts? Maybe play practical jokes together on Gryffindors like Ivan? Miles is obsessed with winning. Maybe they would cooperate to make Slytherin get lots of points, but then avoid each other with a sort of grudging respect the rest of the time. Although, I can see Miles not only trying to make Slytherin win, but also changing the way the whole House-rivalry game is played.

In any case, thanks for the comments, and the story. They are making me think.

Miles in Slytherin - the mind quails. I can imagine Miles in Gryffindor, with his white-knight complex, but Slytherin suits him as well. It would change Hogwarts massively - I think he'd end up with a lot of them following him by the end of his time there... something about forward momentum. Voldemort wouldn't stand a chance.

Edit: Oooooh, and I just thought - DA could stand for Dendarii Army as much as Dumbledore's Army...

(grin) If nothing else, there would be a contingent of Slytherins there for the final battle, unlike in canon, where there were none.

Oh. My. Ghods.

Miles Vorkosigan at Hogwarts? And in Slytherin?

By the time he'd left school, Snape would have made that nice Mr. Ogden (of firewhiskey fame) a lot richer. And his hair would probably be as white as Dumbledore's beard.

I can just imagine the parent-teacher conferences...after his first meeting with Cordelia, Snape says: "No need to open the door, Countess, I'll just slide out under it!"

Love it! My thoughts in particular...

1 - You win extra bonus points for it being a Transfiguration class. According to word of God, skill with Transfiguration reflects the capacity for needed personal change.

2 - Those cultural equivalents are made of win. Being from Cali meself, though, I suggest that you specify San Francisco or Berkeley. Lodi, Napa and most of the rest of Nor-Cal are archconservative.

3 - Miles is such a Slytherin. At least, Miles is such a Slytherin according to the original definition of the term. (Shakes fist at JKR for everything after book 5)

4 - That ending is perfect. Perfect Miles, and perfect High Fantasy - style "Evil cannot fathom good, and this is why they fail."

5 - I want to see more of wizard!Vorkosiverse (sic).

Thank you!

Really? That's interesting! I actually chose Transfiguration for several reasons: (a) it couldn't be Potions, because Draco wouldn't be tempted to cheat for that, and Snape's office would be impossible to get into (b) Transfigurations is a difficult, important subject (c) McGonagall is the head of Gryffindor, and Ivan is in Gryffindor...

Those cultural equivalents are made of win. Being from Cali meself, though, I suggest that you specify San Francisco or Berkeley. Lodi, Napa and most of the rest of Nor-Cal are archconservative.

Hmmm, I'll think about that.

At least, Miles is such a Slytherin according to the original definition of the term.

Yes. I was rather annoyed at JKR for making the whole of Slytherin opt out of the fighting in Book 7. It was so unfair to tar them all with the same brush. Though it's true that "cunning and ambition" can lead one down the dark path too often, it isn't inevitable, and yet that's what JKR seemed to be saying with that.

"Evil cannot fathom good, and this is why they fail."

Oh yes. Hoist on his own petard.

Also, while some people might think that a "cunning" Slytherin would always prefer to cheat, it's a very Gryffindor way of thinking to consider that the best reason not to cheat is because it's dishonourable. From a pragmatic/Slytherin point of view, cheating is not sensible, not just from the risk of being caught, but because not-cheating is actually the most reliable method of doing well! The energy that some people expend in cheating can end up being more than they would have spent if they hadn't tried to cheat. (shakes head ruefully)

I want to see more of wizard!Vorkosiverse
Alas, I don't think that's very likely. I dread the idea of trying to rewrite Book 1 from Miles' point of view and figuring out how events might have changed with his presence there; but that would be the way to do it properly. I think this is going to just stay as a oneshot.
