Hello all! Im new to the community and I just wanted to introduce myself and my birdie buddy Im a new Parakeet owner, so I look forward to getting some helpful information and advice. My parents have both had budgies before and when I exoressed that I was loking into adopting a bird, my mom suggested we adopt a parakeet. I am learning so much from the little guy and I feel like I'm teaching him a lot too. When we first brought him home he was very timid, but it has only been two weeks and he is already warming up and he's very close to perching on my finger. It's so exciting!

Hello all,
It's been forever since I've posted in here; I haven't lived with my birds for a couple of years (they're with my parents), so I rarely have anything to post anymore, unfortunately.
My question stems from sad news; Phoebe, one of my two budgies, passed away on Monday after a bad case of pneumonia combined with either a cyst or a tumor, and an enlarged liver. Now, Ollie (a female) is on her own. She's more sociable with my parents now that she doesn't have a budgie to keep her company, but we don't feel it's right to keep her on her own. A friend of mine has several budgies and has offered to give me one (this way we can get Ollie a friend that is about the same age).
Now, in my experience, male budgies are (in general) more sociable, and just have different personalities than females. I love my girl budgies, but I really would like to see how it is to have a male. BUT...Baby budgies are the last thing I want, and they're the last things my parents want. I know to shake/freeze any eggs that might happen and to put them back to avoid over-laying and babies, but my parents and I are worried about how any laying might affect Ollie's health.
So my questions to the rest of you budgie owners are the following:
- In your experience, does having two budgies, a male and a female, result in eggs all the time? - How do your males and females interact? - For those birds that do lay eggs, have you seen any negative effects on their health and general well-being?

So far so good. He's still VERY shy and we try to tread softly when around him. But he's adorably cute. Those big eyes and funny face.
Look at those colors! He's so cute... He's also been in that spot for a while and pooped a few times into his food dish! I'll have to clean that up. :) ( More here. )

This morning Marc set up the bird cage with new perches and some of Scooby's old toys that she didn't really like. He told me he was ready to get a new bird and he wanted to go get one today. I took one look at the cage and burst into tears. It was so hard imagining a new bird that wasn't Scooby. The pain is still very fresh for me and I still feel sad for her every day since she died. Marc reassured me that the new bird will not be replacing Scooby at all. It'll be like one of her brothers or sisters that we will be giving a new home to. I know I wanted more birds but didn't think we'd get one so soon. But we did.

It's been forever since I've taken photos of my flock to share! Mostly I've been so busy with vet school that I've not had time to take photos at all, but I decided that tonight should be a goof-off night.
Kelp (the little green budgie and newest flock member) has integrated well and is eating everything the rest of the flock eats, from pellets to greens. She's even put on three grams! My other female, Sun, is still the pudgiest budgie, but has lost five grams thanks to the power of exercise now that her flight feathers are back in. Everyone else is doing well, as usual.

I've been looking at pics of other peoples' birds lately, and I've noticed that a couple of the Lutinos look smaller, kind of like my Lemon. Lemon weighs less than 30 g, she is much smaller than my other budgies. Is this a common characteristic of Lutino budgies? Is it also a characteristic of albinos?

I still can't get my birds to like healthier food. I give it to them but I have to add seeds and oats on the top to get them interested in it. Usually they pick out the seeds and oats unless I cut banana or tiny pieces of the ends of broccoli because that stuff sticks to everything so they kind of have to eat it since their seeds are stuck on it.
Now I started giving them the healthy stuff in a bigger bowl and taking away their two seed cups for half a day. It forces them to stay by the healthy stuff and I notice they start to get more curious about what else is in there. Maybe it'll work. :)
Until it does, I still give them 2 tiny drops of vitamin stuff in their water.
Anyway, here are 3 more pictures of my spoiled birds!

Got a couple of nice pics of my budgie Pell today. She's six!
Pell *looks* old in this pic, but it's mostly because she's molting and is a bit scruffy. When her feathers are smoothed she looks about the same as always.
I caught her yawning and closing her eyes. Cute!

Presenting.... The Frumious Bandersnatch (Frumi for short):
As you can see, I chose the male. And I'm so glad I did! What a sweetheart! I imagine some of his cuddlyness will wear off after the "honeymoon phase", but if he stays half as sweet as he is now once he's done quarentine, I'll be thrilled. He's mostly fearless, and will let me do just about anything too him. If he weren't eating, singing, playing and pooping like a healthy bird, I'd be worried. The vet will be able to tell for sure though. ( More pictures and a funny/not so funny story about his adoption )

One is Blue, and one is Turkey. We've had them for over a year, and I can still never remember which is which in photos (unless I can see the back of Turkey's head, as he has a white dot there).

My Mom decided that her 3 birds were too much for her to take care of because she's always busy and didn't have time to spend with them. The guy that helps them out with construction had parakeets so she was going to give them to him. He was happy to take them!
The thing is, her two boys are always sticking together and the girl bird was always left out and hanging out alone. When I brought my bird over, the girl and my bird were always together! So I was just going to take the girl to my house to play with Toby until she was ready to give them away but I realized how inseparable mine and the girl were so I decided to keep her.
Its just better this way! My bird is a lot happier now too, and she's got a cute personality because she's so strange.
I took a few pictures. Unfortunately the last two have bad lighting but they were so cute that I had to post them anyway.
The first one is on top of my TV and the other two are in their cage, sitting at their front door together. It looked so cute that I had to run upstairs to grab my camera, hoping they wouldn't move!
I named her Chicky because she is SO yellow like a little chick! I was going to go with Trixie at first, but it didn't fit as much. She reminds me of the Peeps easter candy but I thought Peeps was too lame.

how can you tell that a bird you just bought is still a baby or not? i bought my yellow lutino on saturday. my avian vet never said anything besides, "It's healthy, good weight, no signs of illness. you can go ahead and skip her quarentine and introduce her to your others". So i did. I've noticed that she is a lot softer than my other keets. her tail feathers are rather short and she doesnt have many of them. she sleeps a lot after she exerts a lot of energy, and she has soft lil mewing chirps. However, when she does chirp one of my females...who has never gone into her breeding cycle yet...attends to her like she is one of her own. Feeding her, and preening her. I've seen my little lutino eat by herself, and drink. So my guess is she is about 6-10 weeks old, and the other keets know she's a baby. She's still trying to learn how to climb the ladder, but climbs the cage well. So what do you think? Do i have me a baby, should i find a new vet, or am i just over re-acting WAYYYYY to much?
here's a picture of her....

I haven't actually read BirdTalk magazine but I just bought a one year subscription for 13.99 on a discount magazine subscription website I found through Paypal Shops! That's pretty cheap for 12 issues!
Anyway, I got Toby right after I moved... so I hadn't unpacked my CDs yet because I always use my iPod anyway. Toby fell in love with my CD holder rack while it was still empty. He was always flying to it, so I started hanging some toys on it for him.
I have two birdy playgyms for him, but as soon as I take the roof off of his cage, he goes straight for the CD holder rack every time!
So now its his, I guess! I ended up unpacking my CDs last week and I just put them in a cabinet! :)

Its probably about 4 and a half feet tall but he can start at the very bottom and climb each level without ladders... its cute to watch him try to jump up to each one and not do a flip!
