Budgietalk Lifespan Survey Progress
First of all, thank you so much to everyone who has participated in the survey (see here for the original post). It's going to be up for a long time so if you haven't had a chance, feel free to take it when you do.

I thought I'd keep you guys updated on what I've found so here are a few interesting (though sad) numbers so far.

As I write this, there have only been 53 budgies surveyed. Obviously, I'm hoping that I can get many, many more than this.

- Of the 53 budgies surveyed, only 15 lived five years or longer.

- This means that 38 budgies died before the age of five.

- 17 of these died at the age of 2 or less.

At present, the average lifespan of the budgies surveyed is 3.6 years if I include those birds that died from accident/injury.
With accident/injury deaths excluded, the average is 3.7 years.

I have also found that in a survey completed in the late 1970's, the average lifespan was 6.5 years. However, this survey seems to have been even more casual than my own and didn't separate deaths as a result of accident or injury.

I am quite surprised by that! My Fifa last for over 7 and I thought the average was more like 8 years with 15 not being uncommon. I found that in books etc but obviously that isn't the case. I suppose then My budgie lived for quite a while, I have been feeling guilty that he died too early and I should have cared for him more etc.

Oh noes, my Mr Bugsly is turning 4 in June 2008 and average-wise, he's like a senior citizen near death's door :(

I once had a budge that I got from someone who no longer wanted to keep a budgie (so she wasn't a baby) when I was age 4 or so and he lived until I was about 11. But I can't remember exact dates so that's not so helpful to you.

He might have a lot more time ahead of him, try not to worry! And keep in mind that 53 budgies isn't really a lot in the grand scheme of things. The average is going to change as I get more surveys and hopefully it does so for the better!

We've been looking after my Primary School's budgie for about 7-8 years now (even though I'm at High School now ^^). However, they haven't been taking good care of her so I'm going to keep her, I've decided. :P Heee.

We also have another budgie who is about 3 years old now, (almost 4). He is very healthy (naturally skinny, excellent at flying, chirping a lot, talking to himself etc), however he isn't too comfortable around humans so I don't try and catch him too often - just put my hand out to see if he'd like to hop on it or not.

Basically all this jibberish is saying that I'd take the survey, but I don't need to! :D And hopefully won't need to for a while!
