More scoop on poop
Hi guys, I spoke to Dr. W tonight, and we had an interesting talk about bird poop. He told me that the messy green droppings that Moxie had most likely wasn't diarrhea. He said that diarrhea is very rare. He also explained that birds, when under stress, void so that they can make themselves as light as possible for flight. So, when you bring your new budgie home or take your bird to the vet and they have watery poop, that is why. Apparently they have greater control "down there" than we do.

He also said that most likely Moxie had eaten the most fibrous part of the broccoli. I did give him a piece, and it did have the stalk on it. Best to stick to just the florets. Too much fibre caused Moxie to bulk up and become constipated. However, the broccoli caused everything in his tract to come out, hence why his droppings were so large. That's also why his droppings have been smaller this week - there's nothing left to come out.

He also said something very interesting - when giving birds food, think of it in terms of scale. For example, one grape to a cockatiel would be like 600+ grapes to us. This is the second time I've talked to Dr. W, and the earliest appointment for a check up that I could get is March 11. Still have to check with my chauffeur on that one :-)

Anyhow, I just thought I would share the result of our chat. Please keep in mind that this was only the advice of one vet.

Wow, a grape is like 600+?

Hehe, somtimes I feed my budgie crackers. He can eat a whole one in like 5 minutes...and then shrieks for more. :P

Yeah, that's what he told me. He couldn't quote me a specific source, but said that some researchers had determined food portion and birds. When I made those budgie balls for Moxie, I thought I was making them "budgie sized" but I have been cutting them in half lately. I noticed that he seems to eat most of the balls instead of just throwing it around like I thought he might.

Heheh! I would love to see your bird eat crackers! I don't have any unsalted ones for Moxie though...I'm sure he would plow through quite nicely.

Yesterday I tried to feed him a small strip of an apple. One side had the peeling on it. He didn't like the peeling. He was trying to find a way around it. So, he came up with a plan. Hop on his perch, stand on his food containers and then try his best to jump and attack the "lower" side of the apple slice that didn't have the peeling on that side.

Adorable!

broccoli was one of the first veggies hannah & brian would touch. i think they particularly like it because pulling off the "buds" is a lot of fun. so it's a toy and food at the same time and they can just buzz through it.

Yeah, broccoli is like nature's wonder toy for birds! I had no idea that Moxie might eat so much of it. The difference between Jack and Moxie is that Jack will nibble here and there at things (eat like a bird) while Moxie just seems to inhale food :-D

Do you feed the broccoli cooked or raw? So far I have only fed my budgies carrots, apples & baby food (other than their regular stuff), but would like trying the broccoli.

I have always given it raw. I'm not sure about cooking it. Hopefully someone else can offer cooked advice :-)
