call of the wild
shanks has been doing this all morning, where he randomly starts flapping his wings and sqawks. at first i thought he was just being silly. then as i was reading through [info]cockatiels's posts where someone asked a similar question.

from the jist of the responses it's some sort of courtship/mating thing.

then i realized shanks has been doing this because there are a couple of juncos and/or black capped chikadees bouncing around the trees outside his window. he made the saddest little noise after one of his failed attemps to get their attention. its far too cold out to open the window for him to call back and forth with the juncos.

i feel bad, maybe my consideration to get him a birdie friend of some sort isn't such a bad idea. though i am looking into different species, such as tiels or a parrotlet. i've heard parrotlets can be rather agressive towards other species though. cockatiel on the other hand, are quite compatable.

one of my parakeets did this (the other three did not), but we finally figured out he was doing it because he wanted to be let out of the cage. and he would only do it when 2 people were sitting on the couch next to the cage...not one, just two. you'd let him out to fly, and he'd be all happy and fine again.

hehe how cute. i don't think shanks feel much like getting out of his cage, as he was nipping my finger as i asked him to step up. suppose he's a little depressed today, poor guy. atleast he's playing with his toys.

why do you think he's depressed? just from not being able to get to the birds outside? poor little guy.
i've kinda wondered about getting a finch or something (in a separate cage of course) whenever one of my birds ends up being the Last Parakeet (i can't get another parakeet because my little flock is infected with pdd). i just wonder if they'd like chirping at eachother, or if they would irritate eachother....

were you wanting to house a budgie and cockatiel together?
that is usually not recommended as budgies can be nippy with the cockatiels.
