| About: | About 2500 years ago, give or take, a man named Gautama sat under a tree in meditation. After a few days had passed, he looked up, saw the morning star, and suddenly understood the nature of suffering in life. What he said then is in some contention, as is much else about what was the nature of the realization Gautama -- later known as the Buddha Shakyamuni -- had those 2500 years ago. Here is a community for those interested in the nature of this realization. Some may call themselves Buddhists, some may claim allegiance to different schools, sects, or lineages which have various thoughts about or at least means of expressing the nature of the Buddha's realization, some may be the merely curious. All are welcome. Please, feel free to join and post, ask questions, and comment. Frequently Asked Questions Please feel free to discuss anything in this FAQ as it develops within the group, it is placed here merely for your convenience (See article 3). 1) Diet. The subject of diet comes up a lot with new members. Arguably, Buddhism as a whole isn't generally directly concerned with diet, although many Buddhists ARE very concerned with diet as they struggle with daily mindfulness and/or Buddhist precepts against killing. Many members of this community are vegetarian or vegan, some aren't. This should not end any discussion on the matter, but instead is just a statement of the fact that diets vary, and controversy abounds around the subject. 2) Maintenance Maintainers will rarely -- virtually never -- act as moderators. 3a) Meta-FAQ This FAQ is written by the maintainers and membership to be of assistance to people who feel more comfortable having read such a document, reading of it is neither encouraged nor mandatory. 3b) Memories Memories entries are kept for the convenience and enjoyment of those who like to refer to them and look around. Reading of them is neither encouraged nor mandatory. 3c) Referral Referral to FAQ or Memories should not be in the spirit of such reading being in any way encouraged or mandatory.
