I am putting together a Six costume for Comic Con that I will post pictures of soon (hopefully including a how-to for making her silver bracelet), but until then, I wanted to share a props site that I stumbled on:

My journey with Colonial Fatigues

Here is a repost, from my own LJ, of the entries i made while making a set of Colonial BDU's

Day 1

After many years being taught, here and there, when i wanted to make stuff, how to build using cloth and fabric, (sewing isn't manly, building stuff with cloth sounds better), I am about to embark on my first solo build. It's pretty easy and people like cleo and windelina would probably knock this project out in about zero time flat, but, I aint them, and I trust both of you, along with my sister and any other experienced sewers out there, are gracious enough in your skills to not point and laugh.

I will be taking a basic set of OD BDU's, simlar to these, only not worn by a skinny black model

And, in order, removing a couple pockets, possibly removing the adjustment tabs on the cuffs, adding green straps and buckles to the upper pockets and cuffs, Suede patches on the shoulders, Patches and pips, and probably fabricating something that will pass as dogtags. I also will need to hem my pants (those of you out there of the shoter leggedness know the curse of hemming pants, nothing fits off the rack)

Then i should have something like this:

(I'd actually outrank him, according to the pips i ordered...why not make myself an officer?

IF i have time, i'll be fixing the pants, making the beltloops according to canon, and finding an appropriate belt.... but theres priorities. The blouse is the important part. I have the appropriate undershirt combo, so then i should be good to go.

Day 2

Here's what I have done so far...

Took This:

Spent some time with the seam ripper... only a few blunders, minor ones, makes it look well worn.

POCKETS ALL GONE.

Now, the tricky part, Adding those straps and buckles to the pockets

It has those goofy military expand-o pockets, so it was a wee bit difficult, had to rip the seam a little, and thread the strap in, re sew the seam closed, get the buckles even...

Not bad for before lunch, eh?

I'm bloody starving now.

After lunch, I will either start on the shoulder suede, or the cuffs....

Day 3

Ok! Things are wearable!!!

As you see, the patches and pips are on the shirt, lookin spiffy!

Pants.... well, all they really needed was a hem, and theyre ready to go...

I have the parts for one of those nylon web belts with the fastex fastener coming, i couldnt find the 1.5 inch webbing here in town, so Sammy is gonna send it from NYC. That's when i will mess with the belt loops. Galactica Pants have 3 big ass belt loops, 2 on the front, 1 on the back, but i want to get the hardware for the belt first so i can be sure i can thread the damn thing before i do anything with that.

That said, i COULD wear the thing to CONvergence as is.

I am running down some dogtags. The character ones are probably what im gonna end up with, because they're cheaper, and I have zip for tools to fabricate my own.

Where to find those BSG navy/gray undershirts?

Hey everyone, so I apologize if this too easy or a repeated question:

But I'm looking to cosplay in the most basic of BSG outfits at DragonCon this year, that 2-piece sleeveless shirt outfit with dogtags. I can't sew, and have never really cosplayed before (I don't need to make a big production of myself, just want to wear something fun from my favorite tv series!). The shirts seem to have a slightly different cut up by the arms/over the chest than most wife-beaters I've seen around. Is there a store(s) where I can find these items? I have my Lee Adama dogtags in the mail right now from TFAW.com.

Also, what kind of pants do they wear with that outfit? I'm at work and can't do a lot of web surfing (much less BSG watching) for reference, and I'm just trying to picture it in my mind, but I can't really remember. Can I purchase those pants in a store too? (See, told you have I have no problem with buying all my cosplay materials!)

Duty Blue Cross Over

So I'm back to work on another run at making duty blues. My last run was originally for myself for last summer's D*Con and I think as a junior costumer I didn't do too bad. I wore them to work for Halloween and got lots of compliments... and a few "is that a band uniform?".

So my question is this: How do you manage the lay over of the chest? I've been going over images and I'm struggling to find something consistant, though I'm also struggling a bit with the collar as well so I'm wondering if they're related. I've seen that some have the collar closed perfectly tightly and some have up to an inch gap at the front.

But the on the cross over I'm wondering how far the cross should be, meaning where do I put the buttons? I'm leaning towards using the nipple line as where the edge of the fold over front should line up. I think on my last run I over shot, but I also don't want to do what I saw at D*con on a few and only have like an inch of fold over.

What did you use? What do you think?

Digital Camouflage BDU's

Since I haven't found the gray knockoffs that the BSG costume department used, and since I have a zillion sets of them, I am working on a project modifying one of my older sets of Army digital camo uniforms to the Colonial style. I'm removing the velcro from the sleeve pocket flaps, getting the IR tape off, removing the velcro for the chest nametapes, etc. I might have to dye them a little bit. It should work well to simulate a more well-worn set that a working Colonial Marine would have than the fresh-off-the-supply-room, out-of-the-back-of-the-wall-locker look that Commander Adama had on the Kobol landing.

I have several extra sets in different sizes if anyone wants to try something similar.

Halloween is coming up, and I was just wondering if anyone had any BSG plans for the holiday!

I work at a comic book store here in Toronto, and we throw a huge Halloween party every year. A few members of the staff usually choose a sort of theme, and this year the theme just so happened to be BSG. I was nominated for Six (not easy shoes to fill!) and my costume is finally coming together (in spite of my reluctance!). I thought I'd share what I had so far, and hopefully hear some more stories!

The dress!

I am dreading stepping out in public like this. I can't let my Gaius down, though!

It hasn't been fitted yet, but this is the general idea. I'm still deciding whether or not to add the side-slits. I couldn't sew if my life depended on it, mind you, so that is entirely up to the lady sewing it!

The bracelet!

These were taken with my camera phone, so do forgive the quality. I couldn't believe I found her bracelet, though. I just happened to see it in a store downtown. I was so certain I was going to have to attempt to make one myself.

The wig!

I have red hair, long red hair, and while I may have been willing to dye it (again), I wasn't ready to cut it just yet, as it has taken forever to grow.

So that is what I have so far. Does anyone else have any BSG plans for this Halloween?

I'd love to hear what thoughts the community has on this approach. Crossposted from my own LJ. Advice solicited. What you've got here is a little photoshoppery where I'm trying to locate the landmarks of the service blue uniform onto the nearest real world garment match: a chef's coat. I'm the washed out dude in the background layer wearing the coat, and on top of me layered at 50%, is EJO in his service blue costume. I've matched shoulder widths, and marked the buttons, rank and flight qual devices, and crudely marked the buttons. So the idea being I'll derive the necessary changes to the pattern of the chef's coat, tear it down, trace it out, incorporate the alterations, and get the basis of my BSG jacket costume from it.

Frakkin Toaster Earrings Sale

Toaster is a racist term. But these are cute anyways. :tongue:

Sterling silver earring backs, with tiny toasters (complete with bread slice!) suspended from a delicate looped chain.

$12 a pair, to celebrate the Human Cylon models. :)

These are on the heavy side as far as earrings go, but they weren't uncomfortable to wear running around all night at Dragon*Con. :)

Hey all,

Does anyone have a suggestion of where to find appropriate cargo pants? I've had my eye on these but I'm not sure that they'll be re-stocking size 14 anytime soon, and while there's plenty of military-style cargos out there, if anyone knows where I can find them in women's/low-rise sizes it's preferable.

Viper Pilot in progress

The plan is me and my Dude are gonna dress up as Starbuck and Apollo for the San Diego Comic-Con in July.

Figured I'd get the components now to see if anything needed modifications. Any feedback is welcome.

So I know this is gonna sound like a broken record, where can one find the Dog Tags? I'm not too skilled when it comes to making stuff.

And heck, is anyone else planning to hit up San Diego for Comic-Con? We should totally meet up for a group photo.

Still a bit more to go... gotta finish up the rifly, and grab a holster / belt for the pistol. The pants don't have belt loops yet either.

But overall, I'm just about ready for dragoncon.

My hope is to have a pair of officer's uniforms by D'Con '07. I'm really having a hard time getting my head around the best way get rolling. I was planning to redo chef's shirt for the single breasting, but I'm not so sure.

Anyone recommend a good pattern to start with?

Though I am starting to making headway in finding the materials needed for a Viper Pilot flight-suit, I've been unable to find *the* key component, which is a pattern for a one-piece flight suit (or equivalent).
Would anyone out there have some ideas/suggestions/pointers on how to pursue this particular phantasmal one-piece? If so, drop a line!

Updates on my Cally costume

The coveralls came in the post a few weeks ago, they were a really great fit! They're not exactly the same as the TV ones, but they're pretty close. I bought some reflective tape from a safety store and sewed it all onto the coveralls. It's been a pretty easy costume to put together thus far, but the hardest bit is yet to come.

Still to do:
But a grey shirt for underneath
Make the rubber tool vest thing
Add the rubber cuffs
Sew on the patch
Put in the little tuck on the bottom of the legs

I really love the simplicity of this costume! It's going to be very comfortable to wear, and so easy to get dressed!! Hopefully I'll be recognised - though I'm sure the patch will help with that. Plus, I have pockets galore in this thing! :D

I still need to get up the confidence to weather it though! Anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking I might also try and add a bit of 'dirt' to my face on the day, so I don't look like a clean mechanic :P Oh and I'll make sure I find some tools to add to the belt.

A New Face, a New Mission

Though my wife and I are no stranger to cons and costuming, we are not masters of craft I must admit.
This Fall, we want to attempt Lee Adama and Starbuck, sans Flight-Suits. Though I don't find the prospect of getting the basic flight/jump-suit to be worrysome, the "Vest" itself is troubling.
With this first entry, I implore those who might have some suggestions/comments on how to proceed with creating (or, quite frankly, purchasing) the Vest which rests atop the flight-suit, please feel free to drop a line.

Beginning Cally costume

In April I'm going to our local convention which will be attended by the Chief (Aaron Douglas) himself!! I'd been tossing up between a Viper Pilot and Cally, though leaning towards Cally because of the similarities in character :D So when I found out he was going to be there, I knew exactly which costume to do!

Ok so I just purchased orange coveralls for my Cally costume. I'm going to be buying the patch from a a guy here in Aust who is having some made up.

The major hard part with this will be the rubber cuffs and tool pockets. I'm going to have to look around for some rubber matting from somewhere; hopefully thin enough to sew through. At least, the pockets will have to be sewn on. I can probably get away with velcro on the back section and heavy duty snaps on the top section. I'll just have to be careful with the weight. Oh and finding the yellow reflective tape stuff. Anyone know where I can start looking for that?

I'll post my progress once I get the coveralls :D

Hey! I'm a new member, but I've been having a lot of fun looking at the wonderful costumes that have been posted so far.

I'm a huge BSG fan, and this Halloween (planning ahead!) some co-workers and I are attending our staff Halloween party as a few characters from the show. I've been assigned the daunting task of Six, and I was wondering if anyone had any idea where I might find some silver jewelry somewhat along the lines of what we've seen her wear.

This bracelet as well as her ring. I hope those links work.

If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

The magnificent frakkers from The Colonial Fleet have signed up to bring BSG love to the Dragon*Con 2007 parade this year. If you're planning on dressing up that weekend in honor of the show (re-imagined or classic), we'd love to welcome more awesome people like you into the fold. This past year's con was a great success for our rag-tag-fleet and we want an even better Dragon*Con 2007 experience. For some of us, this will be our first time marching in the parade. chest pins and pilot wings for uniforms

I make look-a-likes and have to scale things down to fit a 25-31 inch doll. Right now I am working on some of the ladys from Battlestar Galactica.

Bonjour everyone ;) I see this community hasn't been active for awhile - but I do hope to get some helpful suggestions. I will be attending FX & Megacon this year - and would like to rock out as Caprica 6. Specifically the red-dress model. I'm over 5'10 and blonde so i have that part down - but I need help with the dress.

1) Does anyone know what its made of? Spandex?

2) or does anyone know of a similar red dress with thin straps I can purchase and alter? (IE cut holes on sides, etcs)

3) Anyone know what type of shoes she wears with it?

ps. I have below shoulder length hair. When I curl it, its still slightly under my shoulders - and I refuse to cut it. Should I wear it that way, or purchase and alter a wig?

flight suit patches

Which BSG patch would be appropriate for the battlegroup designation patch on the left shoulder of the flight suit?
I'm looking at patchgeeks.com (where I got my stargate patches) and there are 4 BSG-75 fleet patches: the shiny officer one, the regular gold one, the OD one, and the 3.5" white one.

For a viper flight suit then, the viper patch would go on the right shoulder (I guess patchgeeks doesn't have the raptor patch yet [or we haven't seen one onscreen]).
