| LS #40 - Karen's Newspaper (Chapters 1-4) |
[May. 27th, 2008|07:58 pm] |
In my last snark, I asked which book I should snark out of the 3 I was considering. This one won by unanimous vote! And, flipping through it, I could totally see why. I honestly don't think I've even opened this book since the last time I read it (I'm pretty sure I got it for Christmas in 2nd grade, so the last time I read it was more than 15 years ago), and I kind of remembered the plot; but I skimmed it again and seeing the details...this book is LOL-worthy.
It's also appropriate because I'm a journalism student, so I can pick it apart even more heh. Ok, enough talking. Here's the cover, courtesy of dibbly-fresh:
Check out that huge plastic box Karen calls a desktop computer! Then again, this book was written in *checks date* 1993, so that was considered high-tech. My family's computer looked like that, and I spent hours playing Carmen Sandiego games on it. Karen's glasses are also reaching Mallory-levels of hugeness.
Hannie and Nancy for some reason look like cowgirls. I think it's the big fedoras that could pass as cowboy hats, and the tucked-into-the-jeans button-down shirts. Why that strikes me as cowgirl, I don't know lol. And for ages, I thought Nancy was blonde, even after seeing countless book covers that portray her with red hair.
My book has a thing on the cover advertising that there's "Special Karen Trading Cards" inside! They're long gone, I always tore that shit out of all my BSC books. I vaguely remember 4 cards, each one with a different Karen book on it and the back having like 1 or 2 facts from the book. They're now either thrown out, or buried in my Barbie stuff.
Were the LS books ghost-written? This has no "The author gratefully acknowledges..." thing at the beginning, just a dedication to Allison Poulos, whoever that is.
( Karen whines about newspapers, pays homage to Claudia, then pulls a Kristy... ) |

[May. 22nd, 2008|05:36 pm] |
I know I said I was going to snark Kristy's Big Day (and I will), but I read this Little Sister book last night and it just screamed "Snark me!" So I did. :D

So I just read this book and was surprised at how quickly I finished it. Seriously, when I was a kid it took me forever to get through one of these suckers and it took me half an hour just now. Awesome.
I frequent this community every single day--seriously. I love reading the snarks here, and hopefully this one will live up to my favorites!

| BSC Little Sister #22, Karen's Little Witch |
[Apr. 24th, 2008|05:58 am] |
This book is bad, even for a Karen book. Sadly, it's also one of the few books left at my library that's even remotely BSC-related. No cover. I kind of wish I could post one. Karen just looks like her usual dorky self, but her "little witch" Druscilla looks ... unusually curvy for a seven-year-old (she also has huge black hair and is dressed rather fashionably in a little black dress, black tights, and ballet flats). Druscilla is playing with an evil-looking cat ... Midnight...who has giant claws and fangs and (except for its head) looks more like a monkey than a cat.
( Karen hate... )

| Babysitters Little Sister #7, Karen's Birthday |
[Mar. 18th, 2008|07:41 pm] |
Well guys, inspired by the Dawn-is-a-heinous-bitch series (well done, BTW) I decided to do a Karen Brewer is an obnoxious ass series. Now, we all know that pretty much any book Karen appears in (her own series and anytime she pops up in BSC book) there's a guarantee we'll read about her being an ass at least once. But this particular series will focus on the books where ass hattery evolves from inspiring the mere eye rolling most of us do when reading about her to despising this little spawn of Satan so much we long for super powers making it physically possible for us to jump inside this book just so we can hit her over the head with a sock of quarters.
The first book I plan to snark is a little different though, in that while she is mind blowingly annoying, she is surrounded by such awful people (the biggest offenders being her own two parents) that you must conclude her turning into the attention starved, self involved, narcissistic little bitch she is was pretty much inevitable.
For whatever reason, my computer will not let me post an image. On the cover, Karen is celebrating her birthday with her little house family, and is Lisa Engle ever a hot mom. She is basically Christina Applegate with glasses. Makes me think Watson definitely didn't trade up, since all illustrations of Elizabeth Thomas Brewer are pretty damn frumpy.

| Some generalized snark |
[Mar. 10th, 2008|04:05 am] |
Reading through the books I've come across a few odd things that show up over and over, but haven't really been pointed out thus far. So, I figured I'd make a post about them.
1. I can't help but notice AMM seems to have a hardcore "zomg TV is the entertainment method of SATAN!!" stance. Seriously, it seems like nobody ever watches TV in this series, and if a poor kid tries to turn a TV on for five seconds they're stopped and forced to play ridiculous games. In many of the books, you'd get the impression no one in the 'Brook even owns a TV. Yet somehow every BSC member has every episode of I Love Lucy memorized. Um, what?
