I just had the crap startled out of me by a mouse in the dumpster downstairs.

Mind, I'm not afraid of mice, I like them a lot, but no one has told this little dude that RUSHING STRAIGHT AT HUMANS all OMG HAAAAAI LETS BE BFFS K DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING I CAN EAT? is not a very good survival strategy.

And it is not good for the hoomans' blood pressure. When something comes running at you in a dumpster, it's usually not so adorable.

I should've dug out the lettuce bits in the trash bag and given him some. Oh well, it was a paper bag, he'll tunnel through it if he wants it bad enough.

If you guessed video game characters, you are correct! (In order: Pyramidhead from Silent Hill 2, Lulu from Final Fantasy X, tetris blocks, Illusen from Neopets, that bastard dog from Duck Hunt.)

If Claire is not going to be on a full season of Lost so we could have more Jack and Kate scenes, I'll be pissed.

Further proof that I'm a bad person.

I'm searching the interblogs for 8 Simple Rules incest slash.

I don't even want to picture Kaley Cuoco doing that kind of stuff. Frankly I find her vaguely repulsive.

And yet, here I sit. I really do need therapy.

One of the reasons TWoP is still awesome is the "TV moments that scarred you for life" thread. There is always someone who knows exactly what you're talking about and can validate it for you. (Except ever since they started a bunch of subfolders in the "misc" section, those threads get next to no traffic, which sucks, because that used to be one of the most active threads there, and my personal favorite.)

I've been looking for this video on youtube for ages now - ever since I saw a trailer for Persepolis and wanted to draw a comparison with the animation - and I swear, ten minutes after I mentioned this video, someone had hooked me up.

And it did majorly freak me out as a kid. I'm not sure why, as it's not terribly scary per se, but it still makes me really uneasy. Stupid 70s animation. Also, way to go, Sonny and Cher, mangling a perfectly decent song.

Seriously, though, watch it. It's weird.

best day ever or best day *ever*? [10 Oct 2008|04:44pm]

Shortly after completing my last post, [info]khirsah and I left to get lunch and run an errand or two.

Less than five minutes later, we were hit by a bus.

Yes, seriously.

Well, okay. What actually happened was that we had pulled up behind a school bus at a stoplight. The bus was too far into the crosswalk so, not seeing our car, they backed into us. No one was injured and there was only body damage. It was clearly the bus's fault, so it won't affect Khir's insurance in anyway. The kids on the bus get to tell their parents that the bus ran over a car. It could have been incredibly worse.

But after everything today? Of course I get hit by a bus.

Very tired, so it'll be brief today. Literary characters.

I dunno if Little Bo Peep technically counts, but that's the best fucking horse costume I've ever seen, so.

And, of course, Harry Potter, because that shit is everywhere.

loss [10 Oct 2008|01:44pm]

My grandpa died this morning.

My father's father - my older brother just called to tell me. He was always the really healthy and sharp, self-educated and well-read. He was proud of his intelligence, working on the crossword every day and always willing to pull a book out and show you some of his research. Over the last year or so, he declined rapidly - he had cancer, his kidneys were shot, his mind started going. He would have been horrified to see where he was before he died.

I wasn't too close to him. When I was a kid, he'd kind of intimidated me. He was quiet and drunk most of the time, preferring to sit in front of the TV most of the day. When he developed liver problems later, he did give up drinking and got a lot nicer, and I got to know him better.

He was born and raised in New Orleans, got to California during training for the navy during WWII. He grifted old people with card games for spare money. He met my grandma on a blind date, he met Truman Capote at a party, when he was 14 he used to take dates out for highballs and drive around. He was Catholic, wore knickers when he was a kid, and grew up to work in construction (my dad always described him as a ditch digger).

That's all I remember off the top of my head. He had lots of stories, and I wish I'd asked him more, wish I could have known more. When I was in college, my birthday fell during Mardi Gras one year, and he sent me a card that said, "All of New Orleans is celebrating your birth with parades and festivities," and that thought is what's making me cry over losing him for the very first time.

When I was a little child, he would sometimes throw me over his shoulder and pretend I was a sack of potatoes and wonder where Mackenzie had gone, while I dangled, giggling helplessly. One year he ruined Thanksgiving by being surly and mean. He was the only person I knew who ate steamed artichokes for dinner. He'd pull me and my baby brother around the kitchen floor on a rug as we shouted for him to go faster. He taught me how to use a spoon to twirl my spaghetti onto my fork, and every time we went out for Mexican food, he ordered fish tacos.

He wasn't perfect, but he was my grandpa. I love him, I'll miss him.

It's getting to be that time of year again. [10 Oct 2008|02:48am]

piperrhiannon
Okay, folks, we're coming up on card-and-gift season, and as we all know, I suck balls at keeping peoples' addresses up to date. If you want a card - and maybe a present, if you're on my nice list this year and I can think of something to get you - let me know, k? I'll have similar posts up through December, but if you clue me in now you might get some Halloween bounty!

Comments are screened if you want to just stick your address here, but emailing me at piperrhiannon@yahoo.com (how many more spambots can get it? I'm pretty sure they all have it by now. Thanks, perv patrol! Motherfuckers.) works better, as I'm less likely to lose it before I can put it in my address book.

Hey Sarah Palin:

It's worth getting Hey There Delilah stuck in your head for the next two months (which is how long I've had it in mine, thanks Dad, now I'll NEVER GET IT OUT AGAIN) to watch this. It's pretty fucking funny.

Willing myself into being in a good mood is not working.

I'm having one of those days where I'm thinking my mother's docter-recommended abortion would've been a good idea.

Okay, fine, you don't like horror movies. Pussy. There are other movies out there, I guess.

The Wizard of OZ seems really popular...though I never understood why...
