Saving the Carling Acadmey
Hey folks,

Just wondering if anyone who frequents the Carling Academy would mind contacting the club and the City Council over plans to redevelop Dale End. As of yet plans for the venue(s) haven't been discussed and as these things go we might miss any public meeting.

I think this page shows some rough details, but details are thin and hard to come by. So just to see if anyone is interested in adding to a voice of concern about the future of the Academy in town. We need to show that as a community, who possibly spend our money and lesuire time in this area of the city, that we are concerned about this matter and that might help put the Academy in the plans if they aren't there already.

It's our city, right, do we want more shops? Thought not!

Have you actually spoken to someone at the venue about your concerns?

I've thrown an email to the Martineau Galleries people. Will keep you posted.

This was touched on in this community before in this thread.

Cool, I think it's worth keeping this as an active topic we remind ourselves of every now and then.

Some cold virus has robbed my voice away from me :)

I've emailed the General Manager, to see if there are any conversations taking place, if they are being kept in the loop, if they are pushing for a new home in the new development or a new home elsewhere.

I spoke last year to someone in the Academy Group and he said they were very aware of the issues around the Birmingham Academy and they weren't going to be surprised. He implied there were contingency plans in place.

Well, they god rid of the odeon (as a venue for music etc.) so it really wouldn't suprise me for them to demolish the academy and leave birmingham with NEC as the only viable source for touring bands.

I.E Birminghams music scene dies. Then again, i'm more than used to travelling for gigs due to Birminghams lack of luster for my preffered music tastes!

So long as they leave Scruffy Murphys be, i'll be happy.

I'd certainly be dissapointed to see another music venue disappear. Sure i'd love to see a better venue take the place of the academy (Because let's face it, the beer is piss poor and the staff (in my humble several years of bar work) are naff and on occasions have been quite rude.) but it's wishful thinking and we have more than enough shopping centres.

I refuse to buy drinks in there on any scale because of the price, but it's an important venue and without it I don't think the Barfly would have even give us a sniff. Let's be honest, the Barfly will never be like the Academy and the Glee Club can only do so much with live music.

I rarely buy drinks from there because I'm straight edge and don't like wasting money. I go there for gigs so I watch and review the show and then come home. But I love the Academy as a venue. I would be devastated if it did go. I do think the Academy need to come out and say something if they think something is going to happen to the venue - so then we can make a move on championing it. I want official word before I even tell other people about what may or may not happen.

Bit of news. Digital Central, one of the funding/strategy bodies in the city, are planning to hold a debate about Birmingham's live music scene in April/May so people can air views about this sort of thing.

Fourth comment down in this post.
