Lame Application Question

  • Sep. 16th, 2008 at 8:20 PM
How does the teacher recommendation work? Do I have to send my entire supplement online and THEN get a recommendation? Or can I print something out right now to give to my teachers?

I looked on Brown's website and it says that I can set up accounts for my teachers at the common app website... so I guess what I'm asking is if I can do that before I submit my essays and stuff.

Gaah this is just frustrating. I'd much rather do everything on paper because I just like being able to hold something in my hand.

prospective math grad student

  • Aug. 30th, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Are there any graduate students in the math department in this community? I'm a junior right now, and Brown is my dream school. I'd like to know how competitive admissions are and what, if anything, helped you get in. I have fine grades in math, I'm beginning graduate courses, and I'm really close to a few professors in my department. But that applies to a lot of undergraduates. What sets us apart? I suppose the same could be answered by grad students in any other department.

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young. GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.

The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFEtm campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution

Fill out the survey at: www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student.

*While we greatly appreciate the interest taken in GENIUS by students, staff, and faculty at academic institutions outside of the United States, at this time GENIUS is only able to track schools based in the U.S.

Transfer.

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 2:33 PM
Hi all, I just received my Brown letter today- I'm a transfer from Vassar, and I'm pretty sure I'll be attending Brown in the spring of '09 (which is not the same as "in the fall" but I really don't think I should be picky about that sort of thing). I was looking at my credit evaluation, though, and while I applied as a junior I only received credit for 10 of the 12 classes I'd taken at Vassar, which means that even if I got credit for all four classes I took this semester I'd only be entering as a sophomore of sorts. Does anyone know how close the initial transfer credit evaluation is to reality? Will I be able to convince someone at Brown to grant me credit that wasn't initially thought to be transferable?

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Early Decision question

  • Apr. 6th, 2008 at 11:17 PM
To anyone who applied to Brown Early Decision in the past couple of years... Is it possible to get your decision online, or do you have to wait for the letters to be mailed?

The website is a little unclear: for regular decision, it's clear that letters will be sent out, and/or you can find out online. I'm just trying to figure out if the same is true for ED candidates.

(it's for a story I'm writing -- just want to be accurate)

Cut-throat atmosphere?

Honestly, what is the atmosphere at Brown like? I know a lot of you adore Brown from your posts and comments, but is it competitive and cut-throat? Please answer anonymously if you have to.

Harvard v. Brown

  • Apr. 3rd, 2008 at 5:23 PM
Has anyone had to choose between Harvard and Brown? I'm having serious issues about this. Brown is such an amazing fit, and I was named one of the 39 national scholars this year. However, Harvard has great financial aid and my parents want me to go there because "Harvard is Harvard." So, for all of you that chose Brown over Harvard (Yale, Princeton), what made you do so? Any advice now? I know I should choose the college I want to go to, but Harvard has amazing opportunities and connections.

How many people go into UN work from Brown?

Pretty much rejection with a candy-coating, right?

Especially since I was already deferred ED... ah well. I guess there must have been a lot of gay, Jewish, drag queens from Wisconsin with 4.0s applying this year. It happens.

Workload at Brown

  • Mar. 16th, 2008 at 12:58 PM
Could you please tell me about the workload at Brown? I understand that it's extremely intense, but could you be specific? When you first got to Brown, were you really shocked? Do professors throw out work like there's 9823498723497823498724324 hours in a day?

Thanks.

Spring Weekend

How does seating work for Spring Weekend? Is it assigned when you get your ticket or can you choose where to sit when you get there? Thanks.

What's the transfer rate like at Brown? I want to transfer to Brown from a community college, but I'm unsure if they would accept me. I have a 4.0 so far at community college and a 4.0 with 5 credits at the University of Washington, but my downfall is my high school GPA being around a 2.6. I have never taken the SATs/ACTs and am hoping to get it waived since Brown offers that (but it might hurt my chances). If it matters, I'm in the Phi Theta Kappa club, vice president of service for Circle K International (community service club), and treasurer of Rotaract (non-profit and service club).

I know this might not be the right place to ask so feel free to tell me to delete this post if it doesn't relate to this community and I'd totally understand.

WPC/RC

  • Feb. 9th, 2008 at 11:21 PM

Can anyone here tell me about their experience as an RC/WPC? Do you know how many applicants get rejected? I'm only wondering because I was told that once you apply your name gets taken out of the housing lottery. I really want to be a WPC next year and although reslife guarantees that you'll get added back into the lottery if you get rejected, it still makes me really nervous. I'll probably end up applying either way but I'm nervous I'll get rejected because I don't think I'll be able to get a recommendation from a current/former RC. The application says it is recommended but when I went to the info session they said it was required. Anyway, any information you have will be appreciated.

Grad Center

  • Feb. 4th, 2008 at 9:54 PM
I'm wondering if anyone here's lived in the Grad Center towers. If so, can you tell me what you thought of them/how hard it was for you to get the room you requested (especially in Sophomore housing)? Also, if you want to get a dorm room there do you have to request to be with friends or is it doable to get a single surrounded by people you don't know?

Thanks for the help! :)

Word Limit : Special Case Help

  • Dec. 28th, 2007 at 1:25 AM
I've got a bit of a dilemma...
Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated x)!

For that "tell us about yourself" essay, I decided to write a musical instead (this is fine, right? I definitely made sure to ask around before I wrote it and my guidance counselor told me it will probably be appreciated to read)

The problem is, my musical is over 5000 characters AND 500 words (that 500 words really scared me though, as, like others who experienced this surprise, I was working on the online application that didn't mention anything about word limit and has that special upload option)
it's 6878 characters with spaces, 1221 words, eek. It consists of two songs and a reprise.

I've read some other threads on collegeconfidential.com about their word limit and the advice to not exceed around 800 words if possible...

However...with the musical thing, it seems all the massive wordage and extra characters come from all the names used before a lyric to show who's singing/talking, stage directions, the many spaces involved as I wrote it in a script style, and such but I couldn't cut them without losing who is singing/speaking and I've condensed my songs as much as I can already. I can't imagine scrapping this whole thing and writing an essay instead (those PLME ones already burned me out, haha) but if I must, I must :( With my own judgement, I wouldn't cut it as I don't think it's dragging like an essay of 1221 words would be but just in case, is that too risky?

so, bottom line: D'you think it'd be fine to send my musical as is?

Thank-you!

edit; Thanks to all of your input, I've reached a happy medium for my musical length and my application has been sent x)

Public Humanities prospective

  • Nov. 15th, 2007 at 9:17 PM
I'm a senior at Mount Holyoke College, and I'm looking at Brown's American Civ and Public Humanities programs for next year. I'm hoping to get some student perspective on the departments and the grad school in general.
