Applying for UK Citizenship - my timeline
I applied for UK citizenship on May 20th via the local council's nationality checking service. This cost an extra £45. Not sure if this fee varies per council or not but it was worth it to not have to send mine and husband's passports off for an indeterminate amount of time.

Exactly 2 weeks later, I received a letter from the Home Office acknowledging my application.

July 2nd I received a letter inviting me to a citizenship ceremony!

So, from start to end, the entire process took about 5 weeks (the invitation was actually dated June 23rd. No idea why it took a week to get to me). The actual ceremony is scheduled for July 29th.

In all my dealings with the Home Office, this was by far the least painful thing I've done. :-) As a side note, they didn't actually call my referees listed on the application. From what I've heard, its about a 50/50 chance they will contact them. Also, I applied on the basis of my spousal visa, so only had to present evidence for 3 years. For other visa types, its 5 years, which can be a pain in the ass as you have to list every single time you've entered/exited the UK during that time span.

dude, your citizenship application is epic! I'm amazed you haven't gone on some mad killing rampage down at the Town Hall.

It just ended.....I got the notice in today's mail. I'm Swiss. Well, like you it won't be final and all for a few weeks until I get a second letter (no ceremony here, thankfully, heh)...but...wow.

Congratulations! It's nice to hear a success story for once.

On a (possibly weird) side note, I checked out your user profile and your journal, and I think I went to primary school (many moons ago) with your husband...Small world!

I can't figure out how to let you/him know without giving my name (and even then he may well not know!). Hmmm. Let's see. I was a couple of years below him at Great Easton, and had the same violin teacher as Ben. My initials are VO and I used to live in Broxted...I wonder if any of that will help!!

He thinks he's figured it out but a bit of late night texting to Ben should solve the mystery :-)

Ha! Well let me know what he comes up with! Don't mean to be cryptic, but I'm a bit paranoid about revealing my "real" identity online...

Congrats! I did the council check and send thing too, was worth it to keep our passports. I gave it to them Feb 1, got acknowledgement of receipt two weeks later, and approval a couple weeks after that. My ceremony was March 29, so it took almost exactly 2 months from start to finish.

wow! I guess the home office website saying it could take up to 6 months is a bit outdated.

What was the ceremony like?

I suppose it could take up to six months, but as long as your previous visa stuff is in order and you pass the Life in the UK test, I don't see how it would take that long. Depends how busy they are, and they probably don't want people hassling them after 31 days, for example. ;)

The ceremony was nice, it was in the Town Hall in Liverpool city centre. It's a gorgeous building inside, I'd never been there before. They did go to a fair bit of effort; there were cakes and tea and coffee, a local boys choir performed beforehand, there were a few speeches, then we all got up to recite the oath/affirmation of allegiance (depending on your religious beliefs). Each person was presented with their certificate individually. Our visiting dignitary was Lord Goldsmith, the former attorney general who approved the legality of the Iraq war :/.

oh wow. Your ceremony does sound nice. I have a feeling Camden won't make anywhere near as much of an effort. They hold the citizenship ceremony every Wednesday, so from the sound of it, its fairly routine although the town hall building is quite nice.
