Author's note: An AU fic based on episode 3x03 of QI, with Rory McGrath, Sean Lock and Jimmy Carr joining Stephen Fry and Alan Davies. They're students at a good old fashioned British school for boys.

Jimmy's hair glistened with gel as he flattened it down as much as it would go; the parting had already been chiseled in. Only the fringe curled up slightly, as usual, showing just a glimmer of that carefree spirit he kept so resolutely hidden.
"Jimmy!" a breezy Irish accent floated up the stairs, "Your friend is here to walk to school with you!"
"Coming!" he called back. The black strap of his schoolbag grazed his thumb as he hoisted it onto his shoulder; he winced at the weight of it, caused by several thick textbooks and notebooks. He snatched his fountain pen from his bedside cabinet and tucked it away in the inside pocket of his blazer before jogging down the stairs.
"Hi, Jimmy!" a nasally tone greeted him.
"Rory." Jimmy replied, nodding in acknowledgement.
"I know I'm a bit early," Rory started before Jimmy had a chance to ask, "but I thought we could stop by the book store and check out that new physics textbook that Mister Fry recommended to us yesterday."
Jimmy smiled, "Sounds good."
His mother beamed at him and kissed his round cheek, "That's my boy. You have a good day, now." A small pat on the back saw Jimmy out of the front door.
"How did you find the English homework? Did you get to the extra credit questions?" Rory asked, practically bouncing along the pavement as they walked towards the book store, "I went to the library and took out that book Mister Fry suggested, and I really did find it a big help, especially with that essay question about semantics and pragmatics."
Jimmy frowned, "There wasn't an essay question about semantics and pragmatics..."
Rory looked thoughtful for a moment, "Oh yes, sorry, I forgot; I made that one up for myself."
"Right."
"You can have a copy of the question and do it yourself, if you like."
"No, really," Jimmy said, raising a hand, "I'm alright."
"Hm, suit yourself."
Rory continued his inane nattering as they rounded the corner and approached the book store; he only stopped to stand by the shop window, mouth half-open, sparkling eyes excitedly examining the leather-bound book on display. "One day, Jimmy," he breathed, leaving white condensation marks on the window, "One day I'm going to own that dictionary."
Jimmy snorted, "The dictionary that puts all other dictionaries to shame, yeah. Seriously, Rory, despite the fact that it has the skin of a dead animal encasing it, what makes it to so different from any other dictionary? It has all the same words in it, with all the same meanings."
Rory opened his mouth to retort but Jimmy grabbed him by the shoulder and pushed him into the book store, "Come on, let's get this over and done with."

Alan wrinkled his nose and shook his head, "Nah, I'm okay."
Sean withdrew the offered cigarette and put it into his own mouth, "You've gotta try one some day, Davies." He lit it up, "You can't go through life without having had a smoke." He blew smoke into the air with a satisfied hum.
"I just don't want to get emphysema before I graduate."
Sean chuckled, "If you graduate, you mean. Why the hell have you got that thing on?" he gestured to the blazer Alan was pulling around himself to fight back the October chill, "We're not in school, you don't have to display that stupid logo."
"I'm just cold."
"Then wear a fucking coat!"
"I forgot to pick it up when I left the house, alright!"
"Pfft. You don't smoke, you wear your uniform," Sean rolled his eyes, "Sometimes I wonder why I hang out with you. I'm sure you'd be much more at home with the likes of Carr and McGrath."
"I think you need to have an ounce of intelligence to hang out with them," Alan said with a hint of malice, "They wouldn't be interested."
"Do I detect a hint of longing, there?" Sean said, leaning uncomfortably close to Alan's face.
"No!"
"You fancy one of 'em, don't you!"
"No I don't!"
"I bet it's that McGrath," he took a drag of his cigarette, "So you know, just because he's got a bit of a beard, doesn't make him any more of a man."
"I don't fancy either of them, for God's sake..."
"Alright, alright," Sean dropped the cigarette on the floor and stubbed it out with his toe as he pushed his glasses slightly further up his nose. "C'mon," he said, grabbing Alan in a bear hug and manhandling him along the street, "Fry'll bite our knobs off if we're late again."
