'ello all,

Thnks LJ for putting this community in the spotlights!

Obviously I'm a Britcom fan, so interested to see the discussions here.

So far I haven't seen anyone mention 'The Fast Show' yet (but I haven't read all the way to the end). Any other takers?

Peep Show, The Office BBC version of course!...As a matter of fact I like pretty much anything that Ricky Gervais and Stephan Merchant do. Little Britain, Montey Python.  I am now convinced that British Comedy is far better than anywhere else in the world. The only show I even like in the states is Seinfeld and that is only in re runs.

Not a newbie. [Oct. 8th, 2008|03:05 pm]

I've never seen so much action on this community before...it's great.

I've been a member for yonks, and also have loved British Comedy for ever.

I used to watch Monty Python...but it wasn't my favourite. I hated Benny Hill...and I've noticed that so far no one has mentioned, Men Behaving Badly. That show was a hoot, and should NEVER have been remade in the States.

I also love, The Vicar of Dibley,
My Family,
Haimish McBeth, (a dark comedy)
As Time Goes By
Are you Being Served (that's an oldie)
My Hero
Keeping up Appearances
Ab Fab

Damn, I can't remember the name of this one...where the guy finds a portal and ends up in the 1940's, during the Blitz in London. Can someone enlighten me?

Red Dwarf

I'm sure there are more...

But seriously:
I can't believe I didn't see and/or join this community sooner! Thank goodness for LJ community spotlights.

Anyhow, hello all. I have been a fan of Britcoms for roughly 20 years now - I was a fan before I really knew there was a classification for these wonderful programs. My first exposure to British comedy came from PBS. My mother and I would watch "Are You Being Served?" together and I adored the comedy and the characters.

My list of favorites behind the cut... )

Long time fan! [Oct. 7th, 2008|08:40 pm]

I've been a British comedy fan well... forever it seems.  Watched Monty Python in high school and drove my teachers crazy trying to re-enact the skits every Monday in school with my friends.  I love so many of the shows: Butterflies, To the Manor Born, Fawlty Towers and many more.  One of my favorites seems to be one of the most obscure.  I've hardly ever met anyone who even heard of this show, let alone saw it.  Anyone out there know Mulberry?

I've noticed that a bunch of you (bunch of you?? That can't be proper grammer!) list Monty Python as a favorite British comedy. Are you aware that there might not have been a "Monty Python" if it weren't for a radio show on the BBC that started over 15 years earlier? The Python's have admitted that the "Goons" were a big inspiration on their style of comedy. I have a lot of Goon episodes, those are hilarious! Cheers to Spike Milligan, Harry Secombe, and Peter Sellers... "The Goons"...

Have The Mighty Boosh made it across the Atlantic yet? I think they're the Python for the 21st century.

Good morning, I'm Richard, another newbie on this site; I saw this community in the spotlight and thought it looked like a good place to start things off.

I've been gorging myself lately on the latest releases of Drop the Dead Donkey, which I vaguely remember my parents watching, and occasionally allowing me to stay up. I could similarly watch forever Yes, Minister, Not the Nine O'Clock News, Father Ted, The Day Today, The League of Gentlemen, The Armando Iannucci Shows, The Thick of It, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and I'd probably fight to death to defend Steptoe & Son from anyone who defames it. Excitingly (at least for me), I saw the first routine of Jerry Sadowitz I've ever been able to catch. His Total Abuse show has been floating around on Google, and his fusion of magic, sleight of hand and filth is joyful, particularly when dealing with hecklers.

I also saw Coming of Age on BBC3 the other day, and the shame still hasn't washed away.

Being British and living in Britain! I've been to a few recordings of QI, and have tickets for a recording of Never Mind the Buzzcocks in a couple of weeks.

I'm old enough to have watched Python when it first came out -- it was what is now called "Water Cooler TV": one had to watch it, because everybody would be talking about it at school the next day (as was The Goodies).

Hi, I'm Hilary and I'm yet another newbie to this community. I'm from Northeast Pennsylvania, and I love British comedy.
Favorites are always Monty Python (duh!) and Doctor Who.
How much does it frustrate you when you make a Monty Python joke and NO ONE in the room gets it? I was in History class and the topic of the day was the Spanish Inquisition. You can probably guess what I said, and nobody got it. Not even the teacher. It was very sad.
