10th-Feb-2010 02:47 pm - Any Fernwood ladies out there?
why are you crushing me? | hug quote

Seems I do nothing but post and lurk on brisneyland now! :)

I joined up to Fernwood recently and I'm the type of person who doesn't like to do things alone (and it's more fun with others... right?). I can't convince my friends to join up with me and so I was wondering if there was any brisneylanders out there getting foxy with Fernwood.

A bit of info about me in case anyone else is looking for a work-out buddy. I'm a young, single woman with no kids. I'm determined to get from a size 22-24 down to a 14-16 by the end of the year (due to medical reasons). I have a good sense of humour, love books, am a bit of a geek, I have an uncontrollable urge to please people and that makes me a bit of a push over... I get along well with pretty much everyone. :)

Oh, my homebase is the Loganholme branch.

Hi there

Has anyone had any good experiences getting a permanent soft body wave or loose curls at a salon in Brisbane? What about digital perming? Do tell!

We're moving next week and there's a few things were too good to just throw away. All available for pickup in the Ashgrove area or I might be able to bring them to you if you're really nice to me (or don't have your own transport).

51cm Panasonic flatscreen CRT television. Still works perfectly and in great condition; only getting rid of it as we just upgraded to a bigger/better one.

Photo lovingly cut )

Mahogany finish entertainment cabinet. Multiple shelves and spaces to put stuff. Sold.

Kyocera FS720 black and white laser printer. Works well, still has toner but requires Windows computers (we just got rid of our last one).

In case you care what the printer looks like )

Prices are negotiable.
9th-Feb-2010 05:35 pm - Moving a Wardrobe
aeon
Hello! I found a really nice wardrobe on Gumtree. I have to move it from Ashgrove to Highgate Hill. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to do this, like a removalist that would do it. Does anyone know of rental places that would rent out a ute for a few hours for this type of thing?

My car doesn't have a tow bar :(

thanks!
9th-Feb-2010 03:29 pm - Careers/tertiary study advisors?
toastman
Because I can't get enough of the wonderful advice you Brisneylanders have to offer... is there such a thing as a career/study counsellor/advisor once you leave high school?

I am currently working full-time in the travel industry, and have almost 8 years work experience in travel and hospitality. However, I left school during year 11, and am now getting the itch for a proper career... I'm thinking nursing, but I have a few problems:
a) I don't know the best way to get there - whether to go through TAFE or an adult learning centre for my year 11/12
b) I don't know if I can even afford full-time study right now, and trying to figure out whether I'm eligible for Centrelink payments is driving me mental
c) I want to make absolutely positively certain that this is the right path for me.
If I were still in high school, I would have seen my guidance counsellor, but I'm wondering whether there is anyone out there who offers this sort of advice post-school? Can I speak to a study advisor at a uni about these things? Where do I start?

And on that note - are there any nurses here who studied at a QLD Uni? Where did you study? What did you like about your courses? What encouraged you to take up nursing, and what sort of nursing do you do?

Thanks all, this is a big step for me and I'm already so nervous!
8th-Feb-2010 10:45 am - Goth/rock string quartets?
toastman
Are there any string quartets in Brisbane that have a repertoire similar to that of Vitamin String Quartet? Would love music like Tool, A Perfect Circle, Iron Maiden etc... I know of FourPlay, down in Sydney who can play cool, contemporary stuff, but is there anyone in Brisbane? Google's not given much help.

Thanks!

7th-Feb-2010 12:08 pm - Random Tree Question
Hi :)

I have a bit of a random what-if tree question

We rent and on our property are two HUGE trees. HUGE. Seriously large. And our property slopes down at the back where it meets a train line. I don't think just a summer storm would do it but if one of our trees were to get struck by lightening I do believe it would go down...across the train line.

My what-if question is, if this did happen, who do I ring? This tree would easily derail a train. Does QR have an oh-shit number? SES? 000? Energex? I mean as it is it poses no danger to the trains but if something extreme were to happen it might be nice to know who to freak out to.

Thanks!
Melancholic
Hi everyone,

I've had it up to *here* with the number of racist customers (typically US tourists for some reason) we get at work and my ignorant inability to manage them properly when they attack my foreign co-workers.  I shall provide an example:

~

Customer:  "What country you [sic] from?"

Taiwanese colleague: "Taiwan"

Customer: "Bought or sent?"

~

Some of my staff have only been in the country for a year and their English is proficient enough to understand the connotations of that phrase.  Such comments have sent more than one of my crew to tears.  This can be almost daily and we don't do anything to instigate such behaviour - just say hello and ask what they'd like to order - like the rest of the customer service industry.  I can clear up the situation quickly enough but then they attack me and start questioning why I can speak English better than they can (I use big words or something, who knows).

That being said, I feel helpless as a Supervisor when it comes to managing such problem customers.  I, myself, am of Asian descent but with English as my first language.  I want to do my job better and to help my staff.

I am asking the people of Brisbane if there are any short courses in improving PR skills or something that can teach you how to manage not just difficult but specifically racist clientele?

I'm in hospitality if that helps.  I know just saying that alone means it's a lost cause but still...I can't stand not being to deal with idiots who only live to argue and incite hatred in others...and to see my work-colleagues cry.  They're developping a very different image of Westerners right now and that's not a good thing overall.

Thanking you in advance for any help.

7th-Feb-2010 10:14 am - Van Rental
camera
I'm moving house next weekend and going a pretty fair distance. Plan is to hire a van for the day and do it all myself with help from a couple of friends. It'll need to be a big van though, to fit a too-big entertainment unit and a queen-size mattress in it among other things. Can anyone recommend a good, cheap rental place? Friends have had a bad experience with renting a van that came with a nail in one tire and another one bald and I'd like to miss out on that too if possible.

Oh God, I hate moving.
6th-Feb-2010 02:11 pm - Vouch for Brisbane!
boobs
Hi everyone!

I'm a Norwegian planning on spending 6-12 months of my university education in Oz.

Never having been to Australia, or anywhere near the southern hemisphere, it's extremely difficult for me to choose where to go. And this is where you and the lovely people at [info]melbournemaniac  come in!

After researching and googling like a crazy person, both Brisbane and Melbourne seem like places I could really love. But I would like to get a genuine feel for each city and their quirks. Wikipedia just gives me dry facts, and I need adjectives!

As Brisbaners (Brisbanians? Brisbans?) I trust you prefer Brisbane over Melbourne, and I would love it if you could tell me why.

Why should I choose Brisbane over Melbourne? Give me anecdotes, hard facts, pictures, statistics, whatever you have in order to defend your city.
6th-Feb-2010 10:21 pm - Visa for the UK?
The rainbow in the rain | stock
I'm looking to move to the UK in late 2010/early 2011 to work as an au pair/nanny in a private household. I was wondering if anyone on here could give me advice about applying for visas?

Are there people over here in Australia that I can contact and actually meet in person to ask questions? Advisers and the like? If so, where are they? Cause I'm having a very hard time finding them. :(

Any help, suggestions or personal experiences would be wonderful.

Ta muchly! :)

Edit: In regards to Tier 2 visas, can I apply for any job? Is there an agency I can go through that's based here in Aus who can help me find employment in the UK?

Sorry if this isn't allowed, but this could be the start of something huge (again)

6th-Feb-2010 12:17 pm - Home Security Monitoring Company?
Can anyone recommend a monitoring company to connect to a home security system? We've been with Chubb Security for years, but they're appalling in terms of customer service and their security responses.

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

5th-Feb-2010 01:13 pm - Blue Cards
never
Oh help me dearest Brisneyland!

I want to get a blue card. I don't strictly need one, but now that I'm doing children's theatre I figure it would be a handy thing to have. Thing is, there dosn't seem to be any information on the web about which form to fill out if you want a card just because. Anyone have any idea? I should be able to get my director or theatre presidant to sign off on it, but I just don't know which one to apply for.

Thank you!

(By the way, The Pied Piper opens at the Brisbane Arts Theatre on the 20th of Feb! Info at www.artstheatre.com.au or call 3369 2344!)

Edit: looks like I'll have to ring the commission and ask them. Thanks for your help guys!

Hi everyone

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good vocal coach/singing teacher in Brisbane? I'm not fussy about location or cost at the moment.

Thanks in advance :)
4th-Feb-2010 10:30 pm - Share house wanted

Does anyone here know of any sharehouses needing an extra person around Brisbane?

My boyfriend is 20 years old, student, non smoker and pretty much keeps to himself and has to move in the next month or so.  He's looking for somewhere that has good public transport as he doesn't drive and is under $130 a week (or thereabouts).  He's not at all picky where he wants to move to so any reccomendations would be fantastic.
