Hey guys, wanting to ask if anyone is going to tonight's Britney gig?
I went last night and bought merch but the t-shirt sizes sold out ultra quick. Just thought I'd post here to see if anyone going to the gig could do me a favor about getting a smaller size shirt (I'm currently in posession of an XL men's shirt, and would prefer a medium). Can hash out best way to get you money.

If none of this applies to you, carry on! :)
I'm sure we all as fellow geeks have at least heard of the current debate about an R18+ rating for games. Finally, one of our MPs, Kate Jones, has decided to do something about it. While the vote generally rests between AGs and is not something that will be implemented Australia-wide, Having Queensland recieve an R18+ rating is a massive step in the right direction. And one that doesn't involve protests, which in Michael Atkinsons case, have proved to be counter-productive.

There is now an official petition on the Queensland Gov webpage. Up to almost 4000 signatures but it's really slowed in the last couple of days. So Brisneylanders, show your support! Get every Queenslander you know to sign this too :)

So, tonight's weirdness...

We live in Paddington, near the meeting of Given Tce and La Trobe Tce. Usually the food around here is wonderful and groceries are rarely an issue. But tonight the lady of the house noticed that we were out of cream, which just happened to be a vital ingredient in tonight's dinner. So we trotted down the hill to our little over-priced grocery store near Network Video to find some. We found some Dairy Farmers cream with a use-by of the 25/11/09 that seemed okay, but there was still cream in the fridges with a use-by of the 19/11/09 (that's last Thursday for those of you playing at home) that made us a bit nervous.

When we got home we discovered that the cream was off and unusable, so we made another sojourn into the night air and trotted up to Woollworths. At Woolies all the use-bys looked kosher so we picked up a Paul's cream with a use-by of the 8/12/09. We got it home and... guess what... it's also off.

Now maybe it's all just bad luck and coincidence, but I can't help but wonder how on earth a cream with a use-by that says today fortnight is as off as a cream, from a different company, that is dated for tomorrow.

Good grief. Our drama drove us to end up at Sing's in Rosalie.

Consider this a warning to all Paddo-dwellers: check your cream!

24th-Nov-2009 11:28 am - Rental Agent Rant
Cheese
It really boils my bacon that the real estate agent that we rent from has started writing "assuring you of our 'superior customer service at all times'" on all their correspondence when the new property manager we have to deal with provides anything BUT superior customer service at all times. Rude and self important man! We just had a property inspection and I am SO ANGRY with the way he conducted himself in our home. Insert a grumpy roar noise here!

Just a few short months and I'll never have to deal with another lord-of-my-house again, and not too soon! Where do these people get off?
24th-Nov-2009 08:56 am - Blues/roots scene
Paddo
I've got a friend from interstate who's trying to break in to the blues/roots/folk scene and I said I'd scope it out and give him a few pointers on where to play/who to play with. He's an experienced musician with many years under his belt of touring but his old band was a pub rock band and he never spent enough time in Brisbane to really scope out the music scene here so he's pretty much back to square one.

So does anyone have any pointers on some good places to check out some blues/roots/folk bands? Where should I hang out? What kind of venues are good to just walk in to on any given weekend?
23rd-Nov-2009 06:24 pm - Pearl Jam
mofo
Just a heads-up for those of you who work, drive or live around QSAC (ANZ) Stadium. Pearl Jam are playing there Wednesday night (25th) and there'll be extensive road closures, public transport annoyances and traffic delays all around the area from Garden City to the Mains Rd freeway on-ramp and Kessels Rd alongside the stadium. If you can avoid it, I highly recommend it. Last time we had an event this size at the stadium it was pretty messy.

Those of us who are local residents are supposed to have permits for on-street parking (yeah, whoops) otherwise they're supposedly enforcing the 15 minute parking limit.

Official details )

And if you're attending, you'll have an awesome time. I saw them in Adelaide last week and it was fabulous.
23rd-Nov-2009 05:09 pm - Restaurant rec for Indro/Toowong
chilled out working
Any rec's for a good restaurant that would be open on a Monday in Toowoong/Indro? Planning an outing to Mt Cootha with dinner beforehand. I don't like the food at The Summit (view was great last time but the meal was.... less so) up on Mt Cootha so that's out.

I know some places shut on Mondays. I also have NFI about what's decent over there.

TIA :)

Brisneyland, clear something up for me! I heard a rumour that the Alibi Room's closing down/has already closed down, which would mean the end of Taco Tuesdays. True or false?

23rd-Nov-2009 12:33 pm - Naturopath recommendations?
Tra-la-la
Allo Brisneys - I am in need of your expertise yet again!
I've been getting some pretty serious migraines over the last 6 months, and while cyclical migraines run in the family, these are appearing more frequently than once a month, as my mum's family experiences. Although I do have a nice cache of painkillers and migraine 'avoidance' meds, I'd like to try some natural therapies.
Has anyone had any experience with migraines and treating them through a naturopath/acupuncture/chinese medicines? If so, how successful did you find these therapies? Where did you find the treating therapists and would you recommend them? Ideally, I'd like to find someone on the north/west side of the city [I'm in Ashgrove], or very close to the city/Valley. And, if you don't mind the question, do you remember how much the treatments were? Even a ballpark figure would be great!
After talking to a couple of people at work about it, I'm wary of going into it blind, and would really love to have some recommendations from folks on here. On that note, has anyone been to Endeavour College of Natural Medicines> For $10 a session, I'm not sure I can pass that up...

Also, [info]brisbane_eats would love some new members and new posts! We'd love to get it a bit more active so the tags can be useful to people ^_^

gold kiriko
Hi everyone

You know how book giveaways always seem to be for Americans (because postage costs are a killer)?

Well, this one is just for people in Australia.

I'm a (near) Brisbane-based author of gay-character romantic fiction, and I am giving away two copies each of my two latest print releases (well, technically, my first and second pro-published print releases).

Details here:
http://logophilos.net/blather/?p=2322

And all welcome! Entries close on Sunday, 13 December.

If you're curious about my writing, and want to sample it for free before wasting electrons on sending in an entry (why am I typing that out, it sounds insane :) ), you can read whole novels completely free on my website.
23rd-Nov-2009 10:18 am - Christmas Sale!
Hey there.

Merry Xmas from Silk Orchid Corsetry.

As a thank you to my clients past and present I would like to offer a 10% discount on orders placed in between today and Christmas eve, a little gift to you.

I require a deposit to be paid before Christmas Eve for the order to be legitimate and the sooner paid the sooner I can start work on your new Corset.

I would just like to take a moment to point out however, that it would be unlikely that I would have all orders finished before New Years Eve, so if you were wanting something quickly please order straight away so I can get started.

Please email me at Cassi@silkorchid.com.au to discuss ideas and prices

22nd-Nov-2009 11:27 pm - Female rat - free to good home
Beagle tail
I've got a little rat that needs a new home. I breed rats (sorry, for snake food), and sometimes I get a special one that needs to be a pet. This little girl is one of those.

Her name is Bonsai, and I guess I'd call her a 'miniature' rat. At about 2 weeks of age she just...stopped growing, at least not very fast. She's about the size (in weight) of a 5 week old rat now, but she's about 3 months old now. Maybe she has the rat version of primordial dwarfism. =) She's got her adult coat in now, nice smooth fur. She's VERY VERY affectionate, likes to give kissed, super easy to handle and loves other rats (females only).

I can't keep her long term as I don't have enough spare cages and I don't really have the time for a *pet* rat, longterm.

If anyone is interested I can take pictures of her tomorrow. I only have photos of her from when she was about 5 weeks old  pictures under the cut, large, sorry! )
22nd-Nov-2009 09:04 pm - Stupid Heat
Glasses!
Hello Brisneylanders!

Im just wondering if anyone has any experience with evaporative coolers? I'm not used to this heat and so we're heading off tomorrow to buy some sort of cooling device for our bedroom. I was thinking about buying a portable air conditioner - but evaporative coolers are about 200 dollars cheaper! I don't want to buy one though if there difference between an evaporative and an actual portable air conditioner is worth the extra 200 bucks.

Thanks~!

Heyo,

My skin has become evil and inconvenient. I've somehow developed a mild sensitivity to anything containing sls, als, parrabens, petro-chemicals etc etc etc etc. This basically rules out a hell of a lot of soaps, shampoos, conditioners, moisturising creams, sunscreens, makeup, certain plastics and clothes and cleaning chemicals. For those interested, I get blisters in worst case scenarios. Can't even use Vaseline...petrolatum.

SO!

I am wondering if you mighty fine people could recommend any brands or places I can get...stuff...not containing anything in the above list? Bonus points for Aussie made and doesn't break the bank.

Thinking in particular to start with:

- shampoo / conditioner
- shower gel / bars
- moisturising cream
- face cream with SPF

Getting a bit bored of the QV and Organice Care range right now. Looking for new horizons in consumer products :3 Using Earth Choice for cleaning products too.

Thanks guys!

PS - forgot to mention ~ I can't use Natural Insticts for some reason O_o

Hi! Fairly new member here - I'm Gillian and I live & work in Inala. I found out about this comm by chance and I'm thrilled to be here. After scrolling through my flist everyday and hearing about all the interesting things going on in all these amazing places around the world - it's brilliant to read something written about my wonderful home town.

Isn't Brisbane just the best city ever?

And so that this post has a point besides me just rattling on... My elderly Mum has a hankering for Christmas goose this year. Anyone know where I can get a good one, preferably organic?

Thanks in advance!
22nd-Nov-2009 09:45 am - Painted Dutch Shirt Guy
merchgirl
Yesterday at the Myer Centre in Queen Street Mall I saw a tall guy walking around in a blue business shirt and black trousers - that had captions written on them. One leg of his pants had "Iamsterdam [something something]", and the back of his shirt had something about The Top 5 World Issues I'd Like to Talk to You About (in Dutch presumably), with Mafia and "Homosexuelle" being two of them (I forgot the rest).

Does anyone know anything about this guy? If he's just his own thing or part of a group? Does he give you a preaching if you talk to him?

It reminds me of this other guy I saw walking down George St with business attire and a paper bag over his head. I asked around on Twitter and apparently he has something to do with (anti?)unionism. Funny how the business-protest attire is coming out of the woodwork...
22nd-Nov-2009 09:04 am - Dorian Gray
Meow meow meow
Hello all!

Does anyone know of a cinema that is currently showing Dorian Gray ? Apparently it was released on November 12, but by November 18 or so it seemed to have disappeared (that's the last date I can find session times for in cached webpages), so it looks like it was only given a very limited run, much to my disappointment. I've checked the websites for all the bigger cinemas (GU/BCC Event Cinemas, Palace, the Dendy, Southbank/Bulimba/Hawthorne/Victoria Point etc) and it's not currently showing at any of those, so I was wondering if there was some out-of-the-way cinema that I hadn't thought of that might be showing it.

Thanks!

Every time I drive past all the road-works and what-not going on around the Richlands area I am wondering what's going on.
I know they're generally upgrading the roads/hwy and what not, but right on the corner of Progress and Garden Rd is the big area that the office buildings are, but it looks like they're building a car park and today we noticed some funky roof/whatever structure...

Does anyone here have an insight as to what's going on? Is there a shopping centre going in there? Or just... i dunno... lol
