This frightful night of fun kicks off with Vagiant: the all-girl, all-punk outfit from Allston rock city. Even if you don’t recognize their songs form the smash-hit videogame Rock Band, their no-holds-barred songs about drinking, fucking and fighting are sure to pump you up for a zombie-ass-kicking good time! Following their set will be a bevy of grotesque burlesque courtesy of the infamous horror troupe, Black Cat Burlesque. Dedicated to putting the BUMP back into the night, Black Cat Burlesque has been raising pulses, the dead and a whole lot of hell since 2003. As the bad seeds of Boston Burlesque, this scream team mines the depths of their twisted psyches—blending striptease thrills and spookshow chills to push the boundaries of the art form and explore the dark, cobwebbed corners of neo-cabaret.

For the night’s feature, Mr. Cannibal has hand-picked one of his all-time favorite zombie films: CEMETERY MAN. Not only is this an oustanding zombie film, but Martin Scorsese himself has called it one of the best Italian fims of the 1990s, period. Featuring flying heads, hot zombie sex, undead motorbike brats and the coolest gravedigger to ever swagger across the silver screen, this film actually inspired Mr. Cannibal to get into the undertaking business himself. You definitely want to catch this one on the big screen!

Free gory goodie bags will be handed out to all, and J. Cannibal will award a number of prizes for the best zombie costumes from New England Comics, Regeneration Tattoo and Horror Business. You don’t really see compilations that much these days when a few years back they were plentiful, and yet they remain a fantastic way of encountering new talent, on top of which they can be a benevolent guide to a geographical region, as this one is. This is high calibre too, so have a look.

Amber Spyglass twist and gush through a cutely convoluted ‘Harmonic Tide’ with ghostly vocals and a strangely forlorn Eastern quality. Seven Sunless Days’ ‘Last Breath’ is bit stompy industrialised rock, the strident wordy chorus nicely offset by some more introspective worries and although too rock for me it’s dead catchy. The Milling Gowns’ ‘Fist Wings Following’ is interesting as it bristles with some strings inflating an ethereal promise into a bitter pop song, with winning lyrics. Thylacine are like an improved Android Lust in ‘Lay Down’ with fun surging through the weird sonic hybrid which sustains a melodic pull through its schizoid behaviour many ideas jostling for space, not making it ungainly. Walter Sickert & The Army Of Broken Toys offer bewilderingly attractive acoustic adventures in the masterful ‘Viktagraph.’

Dreamchild are really weird with their ‘Ave Maria’ which is like a nightmarish tussle in which a historical style gets a real kicking, and with some of Cheryl’s high notes it’s a cross between Aled Jones and Name Of The Rose! Melt have a curious rock thing moving through the nicely scruffy ‘Through The Doors’ and at times it’s rawk, then introduces some nicely unexpected twinges. Weirdos! Lucretia’s Daggers are superb in the tricksy traipsing of ‘Tragedy’, like a sticky, fidgeting stream of sounds rolling off a giant salamander’s tongue and amid the skill it’s a jolt to realise the lyrical point when it stabs you.

What Time Is It Mr Fox are also fascinating with their ‘Hanging In A Tree’, with light neo-classical pop charm, and don’t be afraid but it reminded me initially of ‘Selling England By The Pound’ period Genesis (not a personal favourite, you just couldn’t avoid it at school) but then rises and assets itself. It’s a curious beast, with impeccable manners.

Mark McGettrick does his big bold take on New Order with ‘Greening’ and it’s a consummate pop diamond. Twelfth Of Never lull you with the shimmery satin syrup of ‘To Lure The Swans And Flies’, a post-Ethereal splendour, and Sharon Crumrine has me transported effortlessly with the beautiful instrumental ‘February’ until it starts getting a bit too noisy and displaced, but second time the weird jangling starts to make sense. Aepril Schaile & The Judgement terrifies ‘Mary Lucifer’ like she’s stepped out of the very worst the Brothers Grimm had to offer, and she’s lugged a piano through the vortex with her and those aren’t keys, they’re teeth! Brilliant stuff, it intensifies up one further level when you wouldn’t think it at all possible and becomes worryingly demented. Ultraplush are like a histrionic shoegaze version of the Velvets in ‘Celestine Dream’

So there we have it, a formidable compilation indeed which despite monstrous variety somehow establishes sufficient common themes to make it have more reason to exist that simply showing how healthy the Boston scene evidently is. That is a very hard thing to do.

Unpaid internships avail @ School of Rock

We are looking for musicians who want to complete an internship at the Paul Green School of Rock in Boston.

This is an UNPAID internship, but what you get is:

- Experience
- "Street cred" if you ever want to go into music education
- High School or College Credit (check with your learning institution; we'll fill out whatever paperwork they need or want)
- More letters of reference than you can shake a stick at, if you do well by us
- Tickets to our shows!
- Inclusion in a team of cool people
- Looks great on a resume

I'd prefer someone who has been playing guitar, bass, or drums for at least 5-7 years. If you've taught, or worked with kids, so much the better.

You will be working with our Music Director (tasks as assigned) and myself (Anderson Mar, General Manager), and may be asked to give a lesson or two to a young person ages 6-17.

The final gig of the month is my first-ever at the Cask 'n Flagon/Oliver's on Lansdowne Street. This one will be fun, if you like blood, guts, and gore to top off the evening - Voodoo Screw Machine (http://www.voodooscrewmachine.com) is back! If you couldn't afford to go see Alice Cooper at the Orpheum this past weekend, VSM is the next best thing.

RAPOSO to Perform in Northborough

Long Island-based RAPOSO (frontman platinum recording artist Greg Raposo) will be performing at JJ's Bar and Grill in Northborough, MA - November 1, 2008 - 8PM, with the Massachusetts debut of their new music.

RAPOSO lead singer and lyricist Greg Raposo has been honored with two gold records and a platinum album since his first record release in 2001, and has accrued a deeply loyal and adoring fanbase that has quite literally "grown up with him." In 2003, the Greg Raposo solo album proved his selling potential with a debut at #40 on the Billboard charts. After withdrawing from the commercialized pop world for a year, Greg has reemerged where he belongs: in the rock genre with band RAPOSO. Along with the mainstream-based fanbase that Greg brings to the table, bandmates Sean Gallagher, Jesse Leo, and Brian Corona bring an older, edgier support group with them from their past in Long Island punk outfit The Unlikely Heroes.

Thisquietarmy is the ambient/drone project of Eric Quach, from Montreal post-shoegazer band Destroyalldreamers. Armed with several effects and loop-samplers, his guitar-based sonic experimentations challenge the boundaries of the conventional guitar-drone mould by combining both non-frigid song structure and ambiance together, blending layers of textures over textures, merging faint growing melodies into a beautiful sea of noise. For this conceptual soundtrack to Christy's breathtaking photographs, Thisquietarmy recreates the transmissions received through the various hybrid configurations (BnA, CnB, DnC) of the Very Large Array dishes in New Mexico located at 3774379 258421 13S on the grid-based UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) coordinate system of the Earth's surface. Different sounds from outer space are captured through the different configurations such as the first televised transmission returning from space, signals from lost spacecrafts and random outer space phenomenon.
