Hello, lurker creeping out of the woodwork *waves* to point out something I don't think anyone's mentioned on here yet...Booshslash mention in the Times yesterday!

At the bottom of this page, or full text under the cut: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/specials/article3069051.ece?token=null&offset=120

Manlove for ladies

When Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt of BBC comedy The Mighty Boosh snogged on air recently, it may have looked as if they were pandering (tongues literally in cheeks) to gay male fans. Comments on the YouTube clip of the clinch seemed to confirm this: “The hottest thing I’ve ever seen!”; “Oh sweet baby Jesus!” Until you get to: “I broked my ovaries!!”, and then you realise that many of the posters perving shamelessly over this man-on-man action are actually female. Welcome to the wonderful, if sometimes slightly perplexing, world of ladies who love men loving men.

Once, this scene was confined to obscure online groups of “slashers” – women who subversively outed a homoerotic subtext within the “buddy” genre for an online audience of other slashers. So Starsky played with Hutch’s clutch and Sam felt Master Frodo’s ring.

The Mighty Boosh snog aside, the semi-secret reason so many, from Desperate Housewives to Coronation Street, have boy-on-boy romances now is not political correctness, but because a large segment of their (mostly female) audience like seeing them get it on. Earlier this year, a gay bar in Melbourne had to go to court to get an order banning women. Apparently they were descending on the club en masse to ogle the canoodling men. Mark Simpson

Heh :) I love when slash occasionally peeks its head out from under the radar...I just had to post in case people had missed this!

Hah, brilliant! It makes me laugh when people get surprised that some women (mostly us) are attracted to ghey...I mean, no one bats an eyelid when it'd mentioned that a lot of men like girl-on-girl, so why shouldn't we like a bit of boy-on-boy?

Mmmmm.

why is it bewildering that girls like boys kissing when men are practically ostracised if they don't like lezzers? the world is odd.

Haha - love this "Welcome to the wonderful, if sometimes slightly perplexing, world of ladies who love men loving men."

Why perplexing?? I've always liked it!!

I've had arguments with men in the past who've tried to convince me women don't like men on men action and that it's somehow wrong. Whereas apparently men liking girl on girl is fine and peachy! Tits!!

I think I might have the following LJ motto! "Welcome to the wonderful world of ladies who love men loving men!"

EPIC LOLS. That is brilliant! Thanks for sharing!

It was funny, a while ago we were having a BBQ and somehow we got onto this very topic. My sister was saying to her husband, "what is it with men being obsessed with girl on girl? Women aren't obsessed with guy on guy!" and they were having this full on discussion about it. Then my sister turns to me to back her up XD and I'm like, "uhhh... yeah...guy on guy...what's that about? eh-heh ehe..."

Haha, I didn't realise that slashers were an underground movement XD I've mostly just assumed that all women would see that logically, two men are better than one. But apparently not!

Haha, I'm often in situations like that! Except I take the other route and say "Well I think two guys getting if off is very exciting." People usually just shut up after that. It's quite a conversation killer among the intolerant or even the semi-intolerant. (Bearing in mind I have friends that make statements like "All gay men should be put in jail or killed"... yeah, I'm slowly trying to distance myself from these people... although I think they do it just to annoy me)

Lol. I can't believe the Times just quoted "I broked my ovaries"

But the 'perplexing' bit does annoy me slightly. Why is it perplexing? Most women fancy men, therefore two men together = hot. Especially if they're bi or straight obviously, so theres a chance we can join in on the action as it were :D

*marches for slashers rights*

A very good point. It's even hotter if they're actually straight (or bi). Because being gay is just like being straight. There's nothing that exciting about it, really. Being gay isn't that exotic. If you're gay it's not like you suddenly get off doing the washing up or paying tax.

But when two good looking 'straight' guys like Julian and Noel suddenly start snogging each other? Yeah, that's SEXAY!

Holy christballs, THERE'S NOTHING PERPLEXING ABOUT IT! As a heterosexual woman, why would I want to read about women having sex even if it is with men? (Not that I don't, but I'm making a point here!)That's why slash is so brilliant! Two men (or more ;P ) making sexy time, no vaginas.

As for it not being because of political correctness, no it's not, but I like to think I'm making the world a better play by accepting the ghey. It seems to me that lesbians are a lot more easily accepted (especially among men) and I like to think I'm sticking it to the homophobes when reading and writing slash. Plus it's just plain hot.

Hmm, I think people are reading a bit much to the word 'perplexing' here. I kinda read it to mean that the world of slashers isn't perplexing because they like teh ghey, but because they tackle the issue in a way that's so completely different from the way men deal with the lesbian issue. To my knowledge, men don't write epic length fics full of drama and angst to go with the sexing, photoshop stuff to make it look slashy, do graphics and icons and vids that celebrate the slashiness of something... It's just such a different take on the issue, and I think that's what the writer of this article finds 'slightly perplexing'.

Anyways, nice article, thanks for sharing. :D

I really like that the Boosh kiss was a big enough deal to merit a mention of slash in the mainstream media. Not because I crave mainstream attention for slash, but because it means the show is successful enough to have its homoerotic moments qualify as cultural touchstones.
Also, it tickles me to have Mark Simpson writing about my hobbies and perverted interests. :)

What an amazing article!
Amazing because I think it's the first time I've ever seen this subject dealt with in such a sensible and light-hearted way.
There's no input from dry and dusty psychologists saying that female slashers are disturbed individuals who substitute real-life sex and relationships with fantasy re-enactments between straight males (bit like the Sealed Knot?). There are no interior designers claiming that we're giving soft furnishings a bad name. There are no health experts berating us about our unhealthy unions with our computers. There are no celebrity chefs telling us that this diet of pr0n will lead to a sticky end.
Instead, it's a refreshing and fun 'glimpse' at the world of ladies who love men loving men. Yay!!

Okay... your comment has made me decide to "come out" here.

Mark Simpson is a gay male journalist who often writes on "queer" and "gender" topics. (He came up with the "metrosexual" theory.) We became e-friends ages ago, and I've often talked to him about slash. When The Times commissioned him to do this tiny article, he asked for my input. I gave him the Boosh kiss angle! Thought it would be a fresh and relevant way to look at it.

So, between him and me, that would explain why there wasn't a "shocked" or "pathological" take on "the slashing phenomenon."

Full disclosure: the reason he called slash "perplexing" is probably because the editors assured him that "our readers have never heard of slash." I also told him he should push for a bigger article because The Boosh are big entertainment news - but he said the editor he was dealing with had never heard of The Boosh!!
