To everyone helping get this list started: Please take a look at the formatting I've started and when giving me stores to add try to format it similarly: The name and address, a link if it's available (easier if you post it in plaintext) and any distinguishing features that might be worth noting to someone who hasn't been there. The extra info isn't essential, but I think it's good to know if it's a used book store, a discount store, a specialty store, etc.

Below is a list of bookstores recommended by community members. Click on the appropriate state and you'll be taken to a listing of bookstores we love located in that state. Check out this post before travelling and find the best bookstores that area has to offer.

Seattle Used Bookstore Guide.

Twice Sold Tales

From [info]joiefilled: There are multiple cats living in the store, and they are fed by a little donation jar that sits by the counter. The people who work there are pretty cool, the owner rocks - she once gave me some free books just because I took the time to have a conversation with her about Dorothy Parker and Edna St. Vincent Millay - and I've found some stuff there I couldn't find anywhere else.

I definetly second the inclusion of Powell's. When I was there last year I spent about 5 hours wandering the stacks and still don't feel like cracked half the store. There were literally entire floors that I had to skip over. It's a fabulous bookstore. I feel bad for the big box stores (my company included) that have to compete with it in Portland!

Okay, I have a few to add. I hope it's okay to mention that here.

First off, in Colorado Springs where I live now, the Book Broker. Absolutely enormous store, and all throughout this summer they are having a "dot sale", in which 75% of their fiction inventory has a dot sticker stuck on the spine, and all of the dots are half off. If you also go to www.thebookbroker.net, you can search their online inventory, which is really just a way to order books online for cheap, many of them without having to pay shipping;

There is also a store I frequented in Seattle - Twice Sold Tales is the name, there are several locations in Seattle but I visited the one on Capitol Hill the most. Their thing is, there are multiple cats living in the store, and they are fed by a little donation jar that sits by the counter. The people who work there are pretty cool, the owner rocks - she once gave me some free books just because I took the time to have a conversation with her about Dorothy Parker and Edna St. Vincent Millay - and I've found some stuff there I couldn't find anywhere else.

Just stopped in to recommend a Chicago store -

The Gallery Bookstore Ltd.
923 W. Belmont Avenue
Chicago, IL 60657

It's one of those tiny, but jam packed with more obscure things than you can imagine. The guy who runs it is great too. Very sharp & seems to have read everything - so you can count on him for a great recommendation.

I'll get you some more info when I get a break at work. In the meantime, do you think we should include the states on the actual page? Because when you link in to one state, it shows the entire post without cuts, and it could get confusing if there's no state.

This is awesome, thanks for doing this!

There seems to be a problem with the Colorado Springs link.

I will attempt to come up with a few good ones from OH, PA, NJ, and ME, but it's been so long since I've been to most of them I'm not sure they still exist...

I can't figure out what the deal is with that. It's not actually a link, but some text changes color when you mouse-over it. Perhaps it's something weird with the journal layout because when I view it in my own journal style it doesn't do it.

I just want to let you know that I hate you all because none of you told me about all the cool bookstores in San Francisco, and I visited and returned empty handed, only to learn about all the book stores. The fact that none of you knew I was going to San Francisco is not necessarily an excuse.
